The labels do not care about things like that, certainly not to the extent you do. Yeah it's annoying, but if labels really cared, they would be waiting until the tracking year to begin to release songs. At the end of the day, they make money, whether the hit makes #3 on the year end, or #19 in one year and #45 in the next year. It'd be nice if we had point totals for songs just to get an idea of their relative success because when a song's points gets splits into two years, it becomes more difficult to gauge how big of a hit it is. Do you really want every song coming out at the same time, and then nothing new for a full year?

In the end, if the song is big enough, it really does not matter when it is released, it will still place on a year end chart. If it crosses over to a second year and keeps going then there are decade and all-time charts.
But to worry about the release timing so a song can get enough points to be #45 on the year end list is for people in this thread to worry about but probably not too many others.
Thousands of songs get released year, only 100 get to the year-end top 100, do labels really have these discussions like:
OMG if we release in October it might build enough points to get to #78 on the year end list but if we release 2 weeks later it might not have enough time?
Or is it more likely that except in a few instances, although they may have an idea or two, labels don't really know which songs will be in the final 100 until the song has been out for a while?

Does anyone have a list of most top 10 weeks in Radio Songs? I feel like "Shape of You" easily obliterated the old record, which I think was held by Torn by Natalie Imbruglia but not 100% sure. That is the record. I don't have an actual list for radio songs but "Shape Of You" at 38 weeks has the record by far

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/8014939/taylor-swifts-gorgeous-set-to-start-as-weeks-top-selling-songTaylor Swift's 'Gorgeous' Set to Start as Week's Top-Selling SongBy Gary Trust | October 27, 2017 Swift looks likely to tie Rihanna for the most No. 1s in the Digital Song Sales chart's history & debut in the Hot 100's top 40. "Gorgeous," the third song unveiled from Taylor Swift's album Reputation, due Nov. 10, should soar in at No. 1 on Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart dated Nov. 11, with more than 60,000 downloads sold in the tracking week ending Oct. 26, based on preliminary data. Such a sales sum, along with a projected total of more than 13 million U.S. streams (powered by its official audio clip), should drive the song's debut on the Nov. 11 Billboard Hot 100 chart in the top 40, and perhaps top 25. Highlights of next week's Hot 100, which blends streaming, airplay and sales data, according to Nielsen Music, will post on Billboard.com Monday (Oct. 30), with all charts updating Oct. 31. With a chart-topping start on Digital Song Sales, Swift would tie Rihanna for the most No. 1s in the tally's history: 14 each. Swift would extend her record for the most No. 1 debuts to 13. The first two tracks from Reputation each opened atop Digital Song Sales: "Look What You Made Me Do" blasted onto the Sept. 16-dated chart with 353,000 sold, the greatest weekly total for a song in 2017, and "...Ready for It?" launched on the Sept. 23 ranking with 135,000 sold. The songs started at Nos. 1 and 4 on the Hot 100, respectively, with "Look" reigning for three total weeks. As for airplay, "Look" was promoted, by Republic Records, as the first radio single from Reputation, eventually topping the Pop Songs airplay chart dated Oct. 28 and reaching No. 5 on the all-genre Radio Songs survey. "Ready" is now receiving a push at radio; it dips to No. 20 from its No. 19 peak, although up 7 percent in plays, on the Nov. 4 Pop Songs chart and debuts at No. 48 on Radio Songs, up 10 percent to 26 million in audience. "Gorgeous" is so far a preview track for the new set, not a radio focus song. Additionally, if "Gorgeous" follows "Look" and "Ready" to No. 1 on Digital Song Sales, Reputation would mark the first album to generate at least three leaders on the list since Drake's Views produced three in 2015-16 ("Hotline Bling"; "Pop Style," featuring The Throne; and "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla). The last such set by a woman? Swift's last album, 1989, which yielded four sales No. 1s in 2014-15 ("Shake It Off"; "Out of the Woods"; "Blank Space"; and "Bad Blood," featuring Kendrick Lamar). Swift is also in line to notch her 53rd top 40 Hot 100 hit, padding her record for the most among women; Madonna and Rihanna each rank second with 49 apiece. Elvis Presley leads all acts with 80 top 40 Hot 100 hits (dating to the chart's Aug. 4, 1958, launch, more than two years after Presley's career began). Meanwhile, "… Ready for It?" should surge following the arrival of its official video at midnight ET today (Oct. 27). Its video-sparked streaming and sales gains will be felt after a full week of tracking (Oct. 27-Nov. 2) for charts dated Nov. 18, including the Hot 100 (highlights of which will post on Billboard.com Nov. 7).

It's longevity on radio is amazing - the fact that it just exited the top 10, and with year end coming up, it looks like it will be clinging for a while. I'm surprised Billboard never mentioned it breaking some type of record, but mentions Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" as the biggest drop from the top 5.

Do the labels care about the year end list? I've been following the charts since 1990 and even I don't really care about the year end list. It is honestly bizarre how this forum has become obsessed with the year end list in the past couple years. For real. I find them super fun (probably not as much as I did back in the 90s) but it kind of ruins it when they're the topic of discussion all year round. It's like if people casually talked about Christmas every other day all year round. Loses the excitement after a while.

This is a random question, but what was the last #1 that wasn't among the 10 most streamed songs? No song through Locked Out Of Heaven to Rockstar did that. The lowest peak is tied between Cheap Thrills and Can't Stop The Feeling (both peaked at #6) and the lowest position during its #1 run belongs to Cheap Thrills only (#9 in its 3rd and 4th week at #1)

Am I the only one that thinks Strip That Down is gonna turn Liam Payne into a one-hit wonder? It's that kind of hit that's hard to come back from, I mean, his follow up is called Bedroom Floor for gods sake.

STD is literally only popular for pretending to be a trap song. Liam's the trend follower of post-1D, he has depended on other artists or styles to at least attempt to get a hit.
Also when was the last time the top 20 of the Radio AI chart was stationary?

Liam is easily the least interesting musically post 1D and feels try hard, STD was a trendchaser that was just ok, but exudes feelings of try-hard imo
Meanwhile this i how I see the rest of 1D: Niall is a folk-influenced rock darling, Flicker was fantastic, very close to being tied with Harry Harry is a soft old-style rock darling, his debut was my favorite male album of the year Zayn is .....something? I like him and don't at the same time, he at least had a great debut album with nice R&B influence but his career decisions are pretty ass Louis is a bit generic current pop so far, but I did enjoy Back To You a lot

I guess you could make the case that Liam's the trend follower of the group (though I haven't heard of "Bedroom Floor" yet), but I wouldn't use "Strip That Down" as an example of that. I mean, it's not even pretending to be a trap song. It's a Justin Timberlake-inspired R&B song song that would feel a lot more trendy if it were released in 2014 when its DJ Mustard-style sound (what with the background vocals going "hey hey hey") was at its peak popularity. The only thing I would consider trendy about it is that it has a Quavo feature in a year full of Quavo features.

I love year end charts but tracking the year end chart blow by blow kinda ruins the fun for me. It started when a poster was so obsessive about Dark Horse vs Happy lol
Anyway, back on the chart! I hope Feel it Still and/or Thunder cracks the top 3 eventually, Sorry not Sorry and Havana top 5.

Radio deal implies something like what most major artists get now for their debut weeks, where the label "pays" to get the song played every hour, every other hour, etc... If it got a radio deal yet couldn't even crack top 50, that cheque was pretty lousy.
