^Thank you!
So Mariah would far and away hold the record if she managed that.
I didn't even think to look at longest gap between original release and top ten appearance, though. I'm guessing that would be Prince, followed by Queen and Whitney. Mariah would not surpass Prince in that category.

When I'm With You from Sheriff At This Moment - Billy Vera Red Red Wine - UB40
Sheriff looks like the longest, but all had around 5 years between release date and #1

While interesting to think about, "AIWFCIY" isn't hitting #1 anytime soon.

For it to be #1, it needs to sell a lot more and get more streams than all those rap songs
Although it did re-enter a couple spots higher than last year at this time(on it's way to #16), not exactly a track to #1

So looking at the gap between the release dates of these songs and when they go #1, "At This Moment" is the longest (released in January 17, 1981 and #1 in the week dated January 24, 1987) compared to "When I'm With You" (released in May 1983 and #1 in the week dated February 4, 1989) and UB40's cover of "Red Red Wine" (released in August 8, 1983 and #1 in the week dated October 15, 1988).

Why are people posting in a manner that suggests "AIWFCIY" could get to #1? I'm a stan yet in no way see that happening anytime soon. I'm not even convinced it will go top 10 this year.

Probably excitement over the fact that it is at its highest spot in its chart run at this point in the year than any other prior year,
It is only two spots higher than 2 years ago at this time. So maybe, #1 talk is a little early yet
Each time, the song peaks at Christmas week (19 days from now) then it falls away for another year. Not a lot of time left

Probably excitement over the fact that it is at its highest spot in its chart run at this point in the year than any other prior year, By 2 positions. Lol. It has re-entered at #23 in the same chart week last year, and it peaked at #16. It does look to jump to #12 or so next chart which is great, but it has lost momentum at iTunes and Spotify the last few days, so there is nothing to suggest it's stil on the move.

15. (+1) TAYLOR SWIFT - Ready For It (70. 666) (-0.631) Taylor Swift is the devil confirmed. Also, why is radio purging Praying? I know it had a long run and should hang on the Hot 100 for at least a couple more weeks. But usually radio doesn't push a single down this hard unless it's a song like Look What You Made Me Do, it's recent update was almost a 4 million loss. That seems weird to me, is it because they are pushing that Macklemore song and they don't want Praying to butt into it's gains? Or maybe it's a natural loss and I'm stupid, Feel It Still just had a 3 million loss but that song had far more longevity than Praying so it makes sense.

Sure, it's highly unlikely, but it shouldn't be ruled out entirely given constant changes to both consumer behavior and BB's chart formula. It's also fun to research what it would mean in the record books if it did. Personally I think the reintroduction of holiday songs to the Hot 100 has been one of the more entertaining chart changes in recent years -- this kind of conversation is, to me, exactly what this thread should be about!

And to add to that, no one here is saying it will hit #1 this year, but rather the fact that it keeps growing annually means that it could eventually grow enough to challenge for #1 in the future. It's not like that's a crazy theory either. The song was #1 on Spotify last year. Think of that growing with its airplay and sales. It's not for certain, nothing ever is, but it is possible that within several years, it could be challenging for #1, and that's something worthy of taking about. It's not like we're talking about Bang Bang by Jessie J going #1...

ugh all chart achievements aside At This Moment is just a completely unlistenable song, all of the worst parts about the late 1980's summed up into one pointless dirge that is one of the worst ever songs to hit number one. Literally makes Chicago and Peter Cetera and even Michael Bolton seem like the best people ever.
As for the top 10 next week does it look like Perfect is going to #1? I really hope so, Ed Sheeran has done a ton of romantic ballads in the same vein and Perfect is by far the best and should be bigger than Thinking Out Loud

I think At this Moment is sappy and good. It got re-released because it was used in episodes of the tv show Family Ties.

It's definitely my least favorite #1 from the 80's, and I hear it all the time on the oldie stations which sucks since it's unlistenable. Unfortunately it's one of my mom's favorite songs. Perfect is pretty much guaranteed to go #1 next week at this point.

Yeah... With the Perfect remix, I doubt Ed's gonna budge from the #1 spot no matter what Post tries.

Of the current top songs, only remix that was a fine fit Was the Spanglish remix for Havana, cause it was fitting since she literally performed it live like that before and has a Cuban background
The remix for Perfect was not needed And I so doubt that Rockstar remix will be anything worthwhile
Why can't Homemade Dynamite be the song that benefits from a remix right now

I just want a new peak for All I Want for Christmas is You because #11 peak sucks for a chart geek like me lol
I love Perfect so I'm glad it is likely the new #1

Why can't a song like "Almost Home" by Sultan Shepard and Nadia Ali crossover?

It's been interesting following the saga of AIWFCIY over the years. I remember when I first started following it in 2005, during her Mimi comeback and the start of the digital era, it hit #1 on the Digital Songs chart. I guess it completely slipped my mind it hit #11 on the Hot 100 2 years ago, I had no idea it peaked so high! Top ten then is almost a given, if not this year then in the near future, however #1 will be a much, much, greater challenge. It has never reached top 10 in overall airplay and that's not likely to ever change, so it would have to rely much more on sales or streaming, but I can't really see her being #1 again in sales (plus even if she did, with sales declines it would count for much less), nor could I see it realistically going #1 in streaming. Maybe if she has another comeback or if there's some type of remix or re-promotion or re-packaging of the album or something? ....

Airplay is definitely an issue, not only because its ceiling is only so high as you mentioned, but also because the airplay chart week is off from the sales and streaming weeks.
