I was hoping You'll Never Walk Alone could be #1 in the Official Singles Chart, since I'm a Liverpool fan and would have loved to have a 100 year old credited on a #1 song, but it seems less likely now:
Downloads of You'll Never Walk Alone need to accelerate today if it is to be in with a chance of being Number 1 on his 100th birthday.
By Rob Copsey
Captain Tom Moore's race for Number 1 looks to be going right down to the wire as The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights is forecast to overtake the 99 year-old war veteran during the course of today, according to the Official Charts Company.
Downloads of You'll Never Walk Alone, Captain Tom’s duet with Michael Ball and The NHS Voices of Care Choir in aid of NHS Charities Together, have slowed down across the week, allowing The Weeknd's Blinding Lights to quickly catch up. While Captain Tom leads on this morning’s latest Official Charts sales flash, just a few thousand chart sales now separate the two songs.
The Weeknd’s reigning chart topper is proving a major powerhouse on streaming services, and with more streaming data to be added in at the end of the week, the Official Charts Company forecast this will tip the lead in favour of The Weeknd during the course of today. At this late stage of the week a Number 1 single is looking less likely for Captain Tom by the time tomorrow’s chart is published.
Downloads of You'll Never Walk Alone would need to accelerate significantly throughout today if it is still to be in with a chance of securing Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart for the 99 year-old war veteran’s 100th birthday.
The cut-off for sales and streams to count towards this week’s chart is midnight tonight. The final Official Chart Top 40 will be unveiled on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart with Scott Mills this Friday from 4pm, with the full Official Singles Chart Top 100 published on OfficialCharts.com from 5.45pm.

It'd be the third version of the song to hit #1 if it does Maybe 4th. Gerry & the Pacemakers Robson & Jerome (Robson Green, from Game of Thrones) as part of a 3 song single Some all-star charity version in the late 80s.

Well that would tie Unchained Melody's record then, which has gone #1 under 4 different versions Jimmy Young in the 50s The Righteous Brothers in 1990 after being used in a movie Robson & Jerome, coincidentally, in 1995 and Gareth Gates's winners single from Pop Idol in 2002

Captain Tom did get it!
24 April 2020 By Rob Copsey
Captain Tom Moore racks up another incredible victory in his quest to raise money for the NHS as his rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone debuts at Number 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart just in time for the 99 year-old war veteran’s 100th birthday, the Official Charts Company can confirm.
The song, with Michael Ball and The NHS Voices Of Care Choir, was released last week on Decca Records, in his continued efforts to help the NHS during the coronavirus crisis. Having already raised over £28 million, Captain Tom has become a symbol of hope and unity across the UK during these uncertain times.
After taking an early lead at the start of the week it looked as if Captain Tom’s closest competitor, The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, would overtake him at the end of the week – until a tweet from the Canadian star last night asking his fans to support the 99-year-old war veteran just hours before the final whistle helped keep the captain’s chart dreams on course. You’ll Never Walk Alone clinches this week’s Number 1 spot with combined chart sales of 82,000, with The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights trailing in second place on 69,000. Proceeds from the single go to NHS Charities Together.
“This is the most extraordinary thing, one of the most proudest moments of my career," Michael Ball told OfficialCharts.com. "But it’s not about me, it’s about Captain Tom. Thank you for giving him a Number 1 on his 100th birthday. You are the best, God bless ya.”
By landing at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart, Captain Tom Moore and Michael Ball rack up an incredible list of achievements, including a UK chart record:
At 99 years and 11 months, Captain Tom is the oldest artist to reach Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in the near 70-year history of the chart.
At 57 years old, Michael Ball also features in the Top 10 oldest credited Number 1 artists. See the Top 10 list of oldest artists to land a UK Number 1 single here.
Captain Tom will be the first centenarian to score an Official UK Number 1 single as he’ll turn 100 on Thursday while he’s still at the top of the chart.
Captain Tom pre-dates the Official Chart! He was 32 years, 6 months when Al Martino topped the first singles chart with Here In My Heart in November 1952.
A Number 1 debut single: Captain Tom Moore shares a relatively rare chart feat with Whigfield, she was the first act in history to go straight in at Number 1 with a debut single (Saturday Night, Sept 1994). Captain Tom is the latest to achieve this.
You’ll Never Walk Alone is the official fastest-selling single of 2020 so far, racking up 80,000 downloads this week. The fastest-selling single since LadBaby’s Christmas Number 1 2019 (I Love Sausage Rolls, 83,000 downloads).
Though he has 4 Number 1 albums, You’ll Never Walk Alone is the first Number 1 single of Michael Ball’s career.
Good things come to those who wait… Michael Ball joins a rare breed of artists who achieved their first Number 1 single decades after their first chart appearance. His debut single Love Changes Everything first charted 31 years ago in 1989. Only two other artists have waited longer for their chart-topping success - Ozzy Osbourne (33 years – Changes with Kelly Osbourne) and Tony Christie (34 years – Is This The Way To Amarillo with Peter Kay).
You’ll Never Walk Alone today joins an elite club of songs that have had four different versions go to Number 1 - only two other songs in history have managed this – Unchained Melody and Do They Know It’s Christmas. The other chart-topping versions of YNWA are: Gerry and the Pacemakers (1963), The Crowd (1985) and Robson & Jerome (1996, a triple A-side with What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted / Saturday Night At The Movies) and now Captain Tom & Michael Ball with the NHS Voices Of Care Choir.
Ground control to Captain Tom… Captain Tom lands at Number 1 nearly 45 years after Major Tom reached Number 1 in David Bowie’s Space Oddity, Nov 1975.
Martin Talbot, chief executive Official Charts Company, said: The sight of Captain Tom Moore and Michael Ball at the top of the Official Singles Chart this week should lift everybody’s spirits in these extraordinary times. We are absolutely delighted to see them at the pinnacle and setting new landmarks as they go – including a record as the oldest Number 1 Singles artist of all time.
“It has been a roller coaster week, starting with a big initial lead for Capt Tom, before The Weeknd closed the gap yesterday to almost nothing – before a massive surge in the final day by Capt Tom. Huge thanks to the Weeknd for lending his support at the eleventh hour. But this is Captain Tom’s week – congratulations sir and happy birthday for next week. You are a hero to us all.”
There's another impressive achievement on this week's Official Singles Chart. The BBC Radio 1 Stay Home Live Lounge charity single, a cover of Foo Fighters’ Times Like These by the Live Lounge Allstars – featuring Dua Lipa, Chris Martin, Bastille and AJ Tracey and many more – enters the Top 5 at Number 5 less than 24 hours after its release. More on that story here.
Outside the Top 10, Sam Smith & Demi Lovato’s I’m Ready debuts at Number 20, earning Sam an 18th and Demi her 13th UK Top 40 hit.
Britain’s Got Talent star and paediatric nurse Beth Porch enters at Number 25 with You Taught Me What Love Is following her emotional audition on last week’s show; DaBaby’s Rockstar ft. Roddy Ricch is new at Number 29; Part Of The Plan by Nafe Smallz ft. M. Huncho lands at 38; Gerry Cinnamon’s Where We’re Going zooms 51 places to Number 39 to become his first UK Top 40 single.

Can the mega-collaboration take the Official Singles Chart top spot?
BC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Allstars are currently leading the charge for Number 1 with Times Like These.
The cover of the Foo Fighters classic is performed by 23 of the biggest names in music and was released last Thursday (April 23). Impressively, it debuted at Number 5 last week after just a few hours of sales and streams.
Things are tight at the top however with The Weeknd expecting to close the gap before the week is out; the Canadian’s former Number 1 Blinding Lights trails behind by only 5,300 chart sales and is the stronger of the two tracks on streaming services. For Times Like These to hold on to the top spot, fans will need to continue their support by downloading and streaming the song throughout the week.
Proceeds of the song are going to BBC Children In Need and Comic Relief, to provide essential support to people across the UK who will be significantly impacted by the coronavirus crisis.
If the Live Lounge Allstars can maintain their lead, it will mark two different charity singles topping the chart in as many weeks.
Meanwhile, Last week’s record-breaking Number 1 from Captain Tom Moore and Michael Ball could see a second week in the Top 10, currently sitting at Number 3.
The 1975 could earn this week’s highest new entry with If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know), at Number 7 on today’s sales flash. KSI could appear in this week’s chart with Houdini ft. Swarmz & Tion Wayne (11) – his fourth Top 40 single if it stays on track.
Finally, after premiering the single on online multi-player video game Fortnite, Travis Scott and Kid Cudi could make a Top 20 debut with The Scotts (13).
The Official Chart First Look is based on preliminary sales and streaming data from the first 48 hours of this week’s chart race, the fuller picture will emerge as more data arrives throughout the week.
The final Official Chart Top 40 will be unveiled on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart with Scott Mills this Friday from 4pm, with the full Official Singles Chart Top 100 published on OfficialCharts.com from 5.45pm.

It's tight at the top between Times Like These and Blinding Lights.
The latest battle for Number 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart is going to be a photo finish between BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Allstars and The Weeknd.
Featuring some of the biggest names in music such as Dua Lipa, Jess Glynne and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the Live Lounge Allstars have come together to cover Foo Fighters’ Times Like These in aid of Comic Relief and Children in Need, which debuted at Number 5 on last week’s Official Chart based on just 12 hours of sales.
While the Live Lounge Allstars took the early lead for the top in Sunday’s First Look bulletin, The Weeknd's Blinding Lights nudged ahead yesterday with a new lead of just over 6,000 copies. But today the charity collective have clawed it back; closing the gap on their Canadian chart rival overnight, they are now just 1,100 chart sales behind, according to the latest Official Charts Company data available today (April 30).
If the charitable cover can experience another strong day of downloads like it did yesterday, the coveted top spot remains well within reach. Should Blinding Lights keep control and claim the Number 1 slot once more, it will mark the track’s ninth non-consecutive week leading the Official Chart.
Martin Talbot, chief executive, Official Charts Company comments:
“After a mammoth chart battle last week, we have another on our hands this week – The Weeknd vs Radio 1’s Live Lounge Allstars looks set to be a photo finish. It is fantastic to see that both battles involve a charity record, a fact which demonstrates the British public’s continuing passion for a good cause, especially at challenging times like these.”
If Times Like These reaches Number 1, it would be the first time a Foo Fighters song has made it to the top of the Official UK Chart, and in the band’s 25th anniversary year. The band’s personal best is a Number 4 with Best Of You. View Foo Fighters’ Official Chart history in full here.
Frontman Dave Grohl was so moved by the BBC's decision to use Times Like These that he has written an email to all of the corporation's staff members, explaining he "literally had to fight back tears".
The cut-off for sales and streams to count towards this week’s chart is midnight tonight (Thursday). The final Official Chart Top 40 will be unveiled on BBC Radio 1’s The Official Chart with Scott Mills this Friday from 4pm, with the full Official Singles Chart Top 100 published on OfficialCharts.com from 5.45pm.

Hoping If You’re Too Shy can debut above 15 so it’s their new highest peaking song.

BBC Radio 1’s Stay Home Live Lounge Allstars claim Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart after a seriously close battle for this week’s top spot.
The rendition of Foo Fighters’ Times Like These, featuring a cast of big names including Dua Lipa, Chris Martin and Bastille, lifts from 5 to Number 1 with 66,000 chart sales this week – 78% of which were downloads.
The track was locked in a close battle all week with The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights, which finishes at Number 2, 3,000 chart sales behind the Radio 1 Live Lounge Allstars.
Times Like These premiered last Thursday on Radio 1, with the music video unveiled on BBC One’s Big Night In that evening. The track and video were recorded by all the musicians featured in lockdown, produced by Fraser T. Smith. Proceeds from sales and streams of the track will be split equally between Children in Need and Comic Relief to provide essential support to people across the UK who will be significantly impacted by the coronavirus crisis.
Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Fraser T. Smith said: “To have produced this Number 1 with the Live Lounge Allstars means the world to me. Every artist stepped up to make this a truly soulful version of the Foo Fighters classic, and I want to thank the incredible Radio 1 team, DJ’s who have supported it, and everyone who’s downloaded and streamed this song to raise so much money for all the charities, in the fight against Covid-19.”
Dua Lipa told BBC Radio 1: “I was really emotional when I saw the final video with all the artists and hearing everybody come together. I’m so happy that we could come together to try to support a better cause.”
Chris Price, Head of Music, BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra, added: “It’s wonderful to see the Stay Home Live Lounge connecting with so many people; that is has reached number one is testament to the power music has to bring people together in such challenging times. Thank you to Fraser T Smith, Foo Fighters and every single artist who threw themselves so generously into this extraordinary collaboration.”Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Fraser T. Times Like These replaces Captain Tom Moore and Michael Ball’s You’ll Never Walk Alone at the summit, which raised money for the NHS. The last time a charity single replaced another charity single at Number 1 was six years ago, when Children In Need single Wake Me Up by Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir was knocked off the top by Band Aid 30’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? in November 2014. Look back over every UK Number 1 charity single here.
While seven Children In Need singles have reached Number 1 over the years, Times Like These is the first single by the BBC itself to reach Number 1 since Perfect Day in 1997.
It also becomes the first Foo Fighters song to reach Number 1 in the UK – their previous best was Number 4 with Best Of You in 2005. Times Like These originally peaked at Number 12 in 2003. View Foo Fighters' Official Chart history in full here.
Celebrating the news Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl said: “Humbled, with so much love for all my fellow artists and listeners. Please remember to support and donate to Comic Relief and Children In Need.”
Elsewhere on this week’s Official Singles Chart, YouTuber/boxer/rapper KSI scores his fourth Top 40 and highest charting single to date at Number 6 with Houdini ft. Swarmz & Tion Wayne, and The Scotts – a brand-new pairing of Travis Scott and Kid Cudi - is new at Number 11.
The 1975 claim their tenth and highest charting single to date at Number 14 with If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know), and posthumous Juice Wrld single Righteous opens at Number 26.
Further down, 220 Kid & Gracey’s Don’t Need Love jumps 11 places to 38, and Kings & Queens by US singer Ava Max lifts three places to 39, marking her third Top 40 hit.
