The Official Top 40 biggest songs of 2018

Featuring big hits from Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa, Drake, Ariana Grande and Anne-MarieBy Rob CopseyCongratulations to Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa, who claim the UK’s biggest single of 2018 on the Official Chart with One Kiss.

The track, which spent eight weeks at Number 1 between April and June, takes the top spot on the chart of the year with a combined sales figure of 1.57 million – made up of 137m audio streams, 15m video streams and 244,000 downloads.

It was closely fought race for the top spot; Drake’s God’s Plan finishes just 7,000 combined sales behind (1.56m). The song, which trailed his fifth album Scorpion, spent nine weeks at the helm between February and April. Drake may have just missed out on the top spot, but he bags two more spots in the Top 40: fellow chart-toppers Nice For What and In My Feelings place at 7 and 15. God's Plan also finishes as the year's most streamed song with 147m plays.

Drake and Calvin's impressive streaming numbers comes as the British Phonographic Industry (BPI)’s annual report reveals that streaming was up 34% year-on-year in the UK last year, with 91 billion audio streams across the year. In December, a landmark 2 billion audio streams were served in a single week for the first time.

Shotgun by George Ezra was the official song of the summer, and it's the third biggest track of 2018 with 1.49m combined sales, while another George tune, Paradise, is at 8 (1.11m).Keala Settle’s This Is Me from The Greatest Showman soundtrack is at Number 4, with 1.4m combined sales – it's also the biggest song of 2018 based on pure sales, clocking up 277,000 downloads.

Rudimental’s These Days ft. Macklemore, Jess Glynne and Dan Caplen – Number 1 for a single week in April – has topped 1.39m combined sales and is the year's fifth biggest song so far. These Days was key to Jess Glynne breaking the record for being the British female soloist with the most Number 1 hits, now tallying at seven.Portugal. The Man’s slow-burner Feel It Still – which took 33 weeks from its first entry point to finally peak at Number 3 – is tenth (1.02m), and Dua Lipa makes two more appearances in the Top 40 of 2018; IDGAF is at 11 (1.01m) and 2017 chart-topper New Rules was still a major player in 2018, placing 20th (837k).

The year’s most popular song so far to miss the Official Chart Top 10 is The Greatest Show from, yes, The Greatest Showman, which peaked at 20, and is 18th in the countdown.

Video streams began to be counted toward the Official Chart from July 2018, and the most streamed clip is Maroon 5 and Cardi B's Girls Like You, with 61m plays – it's at 26 on the overall tally of the year.

Biggest breakthroughs of 2018

Aside from Portugal. The Man, the next top-selling breakthrough single is Lil Dicky viral Number 1 Freaky Friday, featuring Chris Brown, at Number 14 (953k).

More big breakthrough hits from 2018 come from: Benny Blanco's Eastside ft. Halsey & Khalid (20), Loud Luxury's Body (33) and Tom Walker's Leave A Light On (36).

It looks like, with the addition of video streams, they may have finally fixed the YE formula? Doing the old 100:1 for streams comes up short if you use the numbers from the official article.

On second thought, it’s probably just rounding and they’re still using the old and nonrespresentative 100:1 formula.

NEW RULES FOR U.K. SINGLES CHART

In another blow to the fading significance of downloads, the Official Charts Company has once again revamped its singles chart rules. The Accelerated Chart Ratio will now only kick in after declining streams instead of streams and downloads, according to a report in Music Week.

Introduced in 2017, ACR punishes singles that have been in the Top 100 chart for more than nine weeks and have experienced three consecutive weeks of sales decline. The goal is to make space for new tracks. For those that meet the rules, an accelerated stream-to-sale ratio of 300:1 was applied from the 10th week onward, increasing the rate of decline down the chart.

Both download sales and streaming data have been used to determine when ACR would kick in, but as of this week, the rule will only apply to a downturn in streams with downloads out of the picture. That prevents labels from avoiding ACR by attempting to revamp flagging sales using iTunes price reductions. The new ratio is double the normal stream to sale ratio—200:1 for premium streams and 1200:1 for ad-funded streams.

The result might see more tracks moving down the charts faster, instead of remaining steady thanks to iTunes sales. However, with streaming making up around 90% of the singles chart these days, the impact could be negligible.

Something about the year end charts really does not add up.

Mr. Brightside by The Killers is #80 on the year end this year. This year, the song had a peak of 72 and 11 weeks on the chart. The first reason why this doesn't make sense is obvious. The UK mid-weeks are already proclaiming Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" will enter at #1 on Friday. If so, this will be at least the 5th #1 song credited to Broadway composer Richard Rodgers to top the UK charts.

Rodgers co-wrote a number of classic musicals including Babes In Arms, Oklahoma, The King and I, Carousel and most famously The Sound of Music. "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music is the basis of the melody of "7 Rings", and Rodgers & Hammerstein are listed (far too far down) the credited songwriters.

Does anyone know what's up with this week's chart? Why aren't there more songs from thank u, next? With all the streaming and sales data, the entire album should have made it to Top 100 but only Needy and BUWYG,IB seem to be on the chart.

Only 3 songs from an artist and/or project (e.g. Greatest Showman) are allowed ever since summer 2017 in response to the Ed Sheeran bomb. Among several reasons I consider the chart compromised if not useless.

It also means that #1 hit "thank u, next" vanishes from the chart after being #28 last week (it's 14th on the chart), in favor of "needy" reaching #8.

I think I missed this change in rules... dumbest sh*t I've ever heard, but then again, UK charts have many more of these stupid rules so I'm not surprised... Will TUN return after Needy drops or is it going recurrent like songs do on Hot 100?
