Oh wow, I thought this one was a #1 contender. same, I didn't think at any point before opening this that anyone would rank this low. Songs like this are what make me love Country Music and this should have been in the Top 5 at the very least. Up next at #7 I lose my #19 song but I am so surprised and happy to see it make it this far (though it being higher than "Here I Am", "Nothin' but The Wheel", and "You Don't Seem To Miss Me" is just wrong).

I feel like it's "On Your Way Home" but I'd prefer to see "Timber" go out of these.

Ha I honestly thought I would be the lowest ranked for How Can I Help You Say Goodbye. XM's Prime Country plays that a lot and, despite it being beautiful and heart-breaking, it's burned on me a lot and fast.

One of these songs has 3 #1 rankings! 1 of them has 2 #1 rankings, and 2 of them have 1 #1 ranking each. That leaves 1 with no #1 rankings remaining!
The song with 2 #1's will kick off our Top 5 tomorrow night! What is everyone's final predictions?

"On Your Way Home" is SO overrated. Please be out next.

Thank God "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" is finally out. So overrated. It does virtually nothing for me and the fanfare it receives makes me like it less, lol.
Glad to see "She Drew a Broken Heart" come this far (and eyyy I got a perfect ranking!) despite all the very vocal hate it keeps getting in this thread. The hook on that song is one of the most clever things she's ever put out so the haters can stay mad.
On the other hand, quite shocked that "Timber" missed the Top 5 though. That one is such a classic, and it really has no business being lower than "Elvis" imo.

LBTrocks you are the worst lol. "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" is beautiful. The talk of it being overrated is just nonsense. Its gut wrenching lyrics that hit home and it's wonderfully written. This song helped me get through losing my first dog and my grandfather. Should have at least made the top 5. :/

However, compare it to the rest of the songs on this list, it's one of the weakest. sorry not sorry

I just don't care for the way she chose to sing "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" (the soft half-singing/half-whispering thing she does during the verses mainly) and the production just doesn't do anything for me. It's such a blah song compared to a lot of her other ballads. It's still technically a fine song and I don't really dislike it, but she's done far, far better. Lyrically it's great, but the vocal and production are not even close to being one of her best.

"Lonely Too Long" is a nice song. It has a very simple yet groovy melody, that I can't help but be sucked into! Plus the lyrics are awesome. I am glad it managed to make the top 10!!! Also someguy it is BOLD to predict that "Blame It On Your Heart" won't even make the top 5... Although I hope you are right about "You Can Feel Bad" being #1! I could definitely get behind that! I guess it is....I don't really even think about "Blame It On Your Heart" when I think of Patty's signature songs. But I guess it was released a little bit before I started listening to country music (and music in general, I was a little kid when it came out), so maybe that's why? But to me, it's never been among her most signature songs (even though it is one of her 5 #1s). Lol that's surprising, because from my perspective it is her one and only signature song, and I probably started following country music after you did... By that I mean it is literally the only Patty Loveless song I had ever heard on the radio as a child, or talked about by the general public. I also knew "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" for some reason. But literally every other song in this rankdown was a discovery for me, other than "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" which was a discovery for me a few months ago in Castle's Favorite Female Artists rd. So as "classic" as some of her other songs might be, none of them have been remembered by radio and by casual fans as much as "Blame It On Your Heart", at least in the Pacific Northwest and Inland Northwest. I have basically the same situation with Mary Chapin Carpenter. I know she has classic songs, but the only one that I ever heard growing up is "Down At The Twist And Shout". I have since discovered "I Feel Lucky" and "He Thinks He'll Keep Her", but otherwise when we get to her rankdown literally everything else is going to be a discovery for me... But we are also separated by pretty substantial regional differences, so that undoubtedly factors in to our perceptions of popularity of certain songs :)

Regarding "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye"....
This was one of the few Patty songs I knew going into this rankdown, and I also figured it was going to be a top 5 contender. I am disappointed to see it miss out. This is such an emotional song, and has always been a favorite for me.
A cute story associated with this song: My dog had to be put to sleep when I was a junior in high school, just because of old age. I was pretty distraught, understandably. That night, my girlfriend at the time called me to check in. And then she started singing me the chorus to this song to try to help me feel better. It was sooooo sweet! :'(
Also, I have not been super vocal about this on Pulse, but some of you know that my mom passed away on Valentine's Day this year after a 17 year battle with cancer. When I was putting together this rankdown, this song got me thinking about my mom. I made it through the rest of the list, but as soon as I submitted it to Castle, I closed myself in my room and put HCIHYSG on and just bawled my eyes out for a good half hour. It was very cathartic! She was the strongest woman in the world, and now this is yet another song I can add to the growing list of songs that mess me up when I try to listen to them now...
So yes, this song definitely belonged in the top 5.

Cancer is literally the Devil bboat11. I'm really sorry for both of your losses; I shared this on Pulse some time back, but me and my family lost one of our dogs not due to old age, but to consuming a deer carcass literally drenched with antifreeze (two cups worth!), about six and a half years ago. Man my face got ugly when we had to put her to rest. Unfortunately, the perp who did this got away with it. P.S. and yes, I live way out in the backwoods.

Cancer is literally the Devil bboat11. This a million percent. I am sorry for everyones losses. I've mentioned my Grandma before but "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye" describes my Grandma. She was the type you could go to talk to whenever you were upset and she would always find the right words to help you through it. She even tried to reach out to everyone in my family before she passed but most of us refused to have that conversation with her because none of us wanted to believe it was really gonna happen, which is one of my biggest regrets ever. I was sitting next to my Grandma when she took her last breath, and while she was not awake I knew what she would have said to all of us. It is a moment I'll never forget and this song messes me up big time still to this day. I've probably only listened to this song maybe 10 times since she passed, probably not even that much cause it does hurt a lot. That being said one thing I realized while listening to this again for this rankdown was that while it reminded me of that moment, it also reminded me of her and the talks I had with her and that made me love this song even more than before. That ending though is almost too much. Patty sings this perfectly in my opinion because it conveys the emotions perfectly, same with the entire arrangement. To each their own to those who don't like it but I absolutely love this song. Now to move on and try and be a little more upbeat, I will be finishing this tonight! Got a couple albums to spotlight and I want those done before I reveal the Final Two!

Emory Gordy Jr., Patty Loveless) 14 ~ "Sounds of Loneliness" (Patty Loveless) PLACEMENTS: "Cheap Whiskey" - #28 "Out of Control Raging Fire" - #35 "The Boys Are Back In Town" - #48 Released in June of 2001, this album was a huge departure from the Mainstream Country style she had done for her entire career. This being a Bluegrass album was more of the music that she wanted to do and she did this album in spite of Country Radio. Two singles were released from this album. It also features a cover of Martina McBride's single "Cheap Whiskey" which Patty's husband (and producer) Emory Gordy, Jr. wrote. She also re-recorded "Sounds of Loneliness" from her first album. Emory Gordy, Jr. produced this album Up next is a song that tim , jenglisbe , and me all recommend for you all to listen to. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" is amazing, and I almost chose this song over "Cheap Whiskey" to be a part of this rankdown.
