Haha. You guys are hitting on one of my favorite Madonna peeves with "Express Yourself." My ultimate version is the long video version that uses Shep's Remix/Edit with the corrected Local Mix intro. The fact that this has never been released still drives me crazy to this day. Celebration is the closest they came to it, but obviously a minute shorter and with the intro off.

With the release of Finally Not Love and the singles being put on streaming services makes me wish there were remixes of her 80's work. I understand it wasn't the style prior to the 90's but there is so much potential. While I love the originals very much, when the singles are put on Spotify there is hardly any variation and I wonder what the point was for even making them? Its a lot of edits that just make the songs longer or contain periods with drums and without vocals. I could be missing something but the appeal just isn't there for me. Songs would sometimes be modified/changed for their radio and club releases, like a drum being louder, an additional instrumental solo, loops of vocals, more instruments. It was common to make a song more dancefloor friendly but still retain, keep what made the original recognizable. Those 7" versions would often be a shorter version of the album with some editing, or in some cases it had been changed a bit, or it was an edit of the longer 12" version. For a lot of her 80s stuff, those 7" versions were the definitive ones radio played and were harder to acquire in modern times. Those dub versions with minimal vocals/stutters/effects were often useful for DJs to tease the song and then play the other mix with the vocals, of if they just want to change it up. Time stretch technology didn't exist in the 70s-80s, early 90s so if one wanted to do a fully new arrangement, it would have to be at the same BPM/tempo as the original, with "Express Yourself" being one of her first ones to be so radically different from the original album version. It was a full on reconstruction. That was the reason Taylor Dayne, Lisa Lisa, Gabrielle, and Mariah Carey had those re-sung remixes in the early 90s to avoid that issue. Mariah continued to do those re-sings because it allowed her to totally reinvent the song with the lyrics being the only connection to the original in some cases. It was in the 90s when the technology arrived and you could speed up/slow down a vocal but keep the vocals in the same key/pitch with a new production around it. "Erotica" was her first one to have a time stretched, sped up remix that wasn't at the same tempo as the original. Great explanation, thanks! I never knew.

Mentioning Erotica, it just brings me back. I loved her whole look and vibe from that era. Gritty, dark, underground, and a bit dirty. I was 22 and freshly out of college and working my first job in NYC. I was this clean cut preppy kid who had a bit of desire to see the dirty underbelly inside. ;)
I remember going to the Gaiety during my lunch hour...nervous as hell and just watching the show. I went because I had seen it in the pages of her Sex book and I had walked past it everyday, so I wanted to see what it was all about. I saw some hot stuff, but was scared to death. It is no longer there as they plowed down that whole corner to make way for the Marriott Marquis hotel, but I remember it being sandwiched between the Lunt-Fontane Theater and the Howard Johnson right. Besides the fact that it was awesome being in the same place where she shot her book, the entire experience just fit her vibe at the time.

The article I read seemed to mention that they would be replicas of her outfits.

I am going to do my best to avoid as many spoilers about setlist as I can. Usually I know the entire setlist before the show, but it always spoils it a bit for me, but I cannot help myself.
In terms of show content, I would love to see her do something where she not only does her greatest hits but also recreates some of the stage performances from her previous tours. A handful of some iconic showstoppers:
1)Dress You Up-Virgin Tour 2)Open Your Heart - Who's That Girl Tour 3)Express Yourself - Blond Ambition 4)Like a Prayer - Blond Ambition 5)Keep it Together - Blond Ambition 6)Vogue - while Blond Ambition is most remembered, my favorite is Girlie Show or Re-Invention 7)La Isla Bonita - yes its tired, but if she is going to give a nod to a performance, I would vote for the Girlie Show version 8)Holiday - if she is going to do this one again, it would be fun to recreate the joyous fun she had with it on the Virgin Tour or Blond Ambition

I was thinking, Madonna has several singles that were hits, but when talking about her career, they are rarely mentioned or she rarely performs. Which of her "forgotten hits" are your favorites?
My top 5 are:
1)Keep it Together (I love all the mixes) 2)I'll Remember 3)Oh Father 4)Dress You Up 5)Power of Goodbye
There are a handful of others (Angel, Cherish, etc.) but these are my favorites.

I have always ADORED Angel especially the Extended Dance Remix. As far as others, I would say Rescue Me, I'll Remember, The Power of Goodbye, and Take a Bow (only considering she never performs it). In some ways, I feel like Don't Tell Me is becoming a forgotten hit in the sea of her endless amounts of hits but that was my gateway into her discography . I feel like she performs or references Music and What It Feels Like For a Girl more often.

There were also a few different "radio" versions of Express Yourself. Though it is probably my favorite song by Madonna, the album version is my least liked. Mainly because it sounds a bit more hollow. For the radio version, they added the low bass strings to the background that really filled it out. Yes! That radio version beefed it all up just right. The 7" version of "Like A Prayer" also feels fuller than the original LP version. Ok lmao so I went back and listened to the 7ββ version of Like a Prayer and she tore! So much fuller than the original.

Just for fun, here is M doing βLove Makes the World Goes Aroundβ At Live AID in July 1985. A lot of you have already seen this, but for those who havenβt, here are some bits of info:
1)This was at RFK Stadium in Philadelphia. By far the largest audience she had ever played to. 2)She makes reference to the nude photos from her early modeling days that had just come out in Penthouse. 3)This was a full year before the True Blue album came out and the debut of Love Makesβ¦ 4)This performance was a full two weeks before she released βDress You Upβ as a single. Not sure why she didnβt promote that song instead, but maybe she thought Love Makes fit the theme of Live AID 5)The Virgin Tour had just wrapped a month before this performance. 6)Love Makes was supposed to be the lead single off True Blue, but was scrapped for Papa Donβt Preach, which she didnβt even record until about 3 months after Live AID 7)Thompson Twins sing backup on this performance and Madonna is sort of off-key the whole time. 8)Sheβs brunette here

I'm just not interested in any of these single releases. I want an album reissue. I feel like they aren't coming.
