"Bitch I'm Madonna" deserves, it really grew on me. Hated it at first, but over the last couple of years I've grown to appreciate it alot more. She wasn't the first to do Hyperpop but she was one of the first "big" mainstream artists to do so.

I truly think HC and MDNA were the only times she was chasing trends instead of elevating new ones.

Billboard Hot 100 25 and 20 years ago this week: April 18, 1998 01 01 All My Life - K-Ci & JoJo (3rd and final week at #1) 02 02 Let's Ride - Montell Jordan feat. Master P & Silkk The Shocker 03 04 Too Close - Next 04 03 Frozen - Madonna05 06 Truly Madly Deeply - Savage Garden 06 09 Romeo And Juliet - Sylk-E Fyne feat. Chill 07 07 Nice & Slow - Usher 08 13 Sex And Candy - Marcy Playground 09 08 Gone Till November - Wyclef Jean 10 05 My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion Looking at this Top 10 just shows how much Madonna ushered in Electronic music to the mainstream. This was 1998 at the peak of the rave scene. I know cuz I was there. There was literally NOTHING else like Frozen on mainstream radio at all. Nothing. Quite the opposite, really.

Absolutely correct...especially when you look at the top 10 and realize 6 of the songs are all R&B and she comes out of left field with electronica.

I was perusing the past Grammy winners and nominees. Obviously we all know that Madonna does not get much Grammy love (7 awards / 22 Nominations). This is especially egregious considering how long she has been in the industry and the impact she has made. One of the areas that she is constantly given credit, sometimes more so than her music, are her videos. So when I checked the the music video categories...Long Form Music Video / Music Film and Short Form Music Video, you would expect her to have at the a ton of nominations, but that is not true.
Long Form Music Video / Music Film (4 Nominations, 2 Wins) 1992: Blond Ambition Tour Live (WON) 1995: Girlie Show Live (Lost to U2: Zoo TV: Live from Sydney) 2007: I'm Going to Tell You a Secret (Lost to Bruce Springsteen: Wings for Wheels: The Making of Born to Run) 2008: The Confessions Tour Live (WON)
Best Short Form Music Video (4 Nominations, 1 Win) 1991: Oh Father (Lost to Paula Abdul: Opposites Attract) 1999: Ray of Light (Won) 2002: Don't Tell Me (Lost to Fatboy Slim: Weapon of Choice) 2004: Die Another Day (Lost to Johnny Cash: Hurt)
Some notes:
1)3 / 7 of her wins are in Video categories
2)"Truth or Dare", which was one of the biggest music documentaries of all time didn't even get a nomination, but the tour it documented (Blond Ambition) did win. Could be that both were eligible during the same awards season and they nominated the one that they felt had a better chance of winning. Interestingly, IGTTYAS, which most critics and fans found inferior to TOD, received a nomination.
3)I think it is more interesting that she has received very little love in the Short Form category. Her music videos have consistently been cited for being groundbreaking and basically defining the genre. Music videos like Material Girl, Express Yourself, Open Your Heart, Papa Don't Preach, Bad Girl, Take A Bow, Frozen, Music, Hung Up, etc. didn't even warrant a nomination.

Whitney and Mariah hardly have any either.

Let's not overlook that Madonna was a bit racy for the middle-of-the-road/safe NARAS/Grammys. When Rolling was nominated, she pondered what the awards were based on, as she didn't receive e major nods when she was hugely successful and she didn't get any when the music was acclaimed. With ROL, she was in her ethereal/"mother era, so it was a natural to nominate her for major categories.
Looking at today's news, the Like a Virgin album is among this year's inductees into the National Recording Registry.

^The one submitted was censored, though, eh? :) In any event, Duran Duran was ignored by the Grammys, too, in major categories.

Looking at this Top 10 just shows how much Madonna ushered in Electronic music to the mainstream. This was 1998 at the peak of the rave scene. I know cuz I was there. There was literally NOTHING else like Frozen on mainstream radio at all. Nothing. Quite the opposite, really. Absolutely correct...especially when you look at the top 10 and realize 6 of the songs are all R&B and she comes out of left field with electronica. you know I was thinking about this all day and the best metaphor I can think of is this... just imagine if you made it all the way to 21 years old and you suddenly heard a guitar for the first time. Imagine how exciting and refreshing that would be. Back in 1998, there was no electronic music in movies or TV commercials or any super popular mainstream hit. Yes, there were dance classics like La Bouche, Missing, Rhythm is a Dancer, What is Love?, etc, but that wasn't the sound of the rave scene. Those were just dance songs. The underground rave scene was trance, techno, and drum n bass. There weren't even barely any lyrics, just sometimes a female loop, and NOTHING remixed from a Top 10 radio station song. That would've been embarrassing. Nobody knew what was going on. Parents didn't know, the cops didn't know. There was a secret society, and really the only way you knew how to identify them was with the size of the Gnko pants they were wearing, lol. There were underground alternative artists like Bjork, Chemical Brothers, Moby, etc rising up, but never making a dent inside the Top 10 of radio. Then along comes Madonna and it all changed. Especially with her Behind the Music on VH1 with the Ray of Light album. That's when things kinda opened itself onto mainstream. Madonna wasn't the first, but she was the biggest, and her influence gets the credit.

It was some kind of video compilation release. Hungry Like The Wolf also won. The next 3 years, video films won: David Bowie (21 minutes long), We Are The World recording session and Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits. Individual video nominees began in 1990. Madonna Four Clips would have been eligible when it was released in November 1984.

Madonna Four Clips would have been eligible when it was released in November 1984. I am sorry, but I think you are mistaken. There were two separate categories from the start (1984)...it says right on the entry page, "Not to be confused with Grammy Award for Best Music Film." The naming of the categories changed slightly over time, but they were around since 1984. Duran Duran won Best Music Video for two entries, Girls on Film / Hungry Like the Wolf. That very same year, they also won Best Music Film / Longform Music Video for the Duran Duran video compilation. The next year, David Bowie won Best Music Video for Jazzin for Blue Jean and Best Music Fim / Long Form Music Video went to the Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller. They are two separate awards that have been award concurrently since inception. I assume that as long as the video (or video collection) is under a certain length, it qualifies for Music Video, Short Form and anything longer competes in Long Form. Here is directly from the Grammy site: Best Short Form Music Video - The Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video has been handed out since 1984. It was introduced along with the Best Short Form Music Video. In 1988 and 1989 the award criteria was changed and the awards were presented as Best Concept Music Video and Best Performance Music Video. Best Long Form Music Video - The Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video has been handed out since 1984. The award criteria was changed in 1988 and 1989 when the awards were presented for Best Concept Music Video and Best Performance Music Video instead of Best Short Form Music Video.

Funnily enough, this is the album I come back to the least. It sounds like a product of its time, which makes it feel dated. I feel like her first album was stronger. It felt slightly more new wave and sexy. Like a Virgin felt a bit more teenager / teeny bopper. Clearly, that was what was selling at the time and why it resonated so strongly. Just personal taste I guess.

She announced her first Latin America date today. Mexico City on January 25. She will be playing at Palacio de los Deportes, a 26K seat arena. She has played there only once before during the Rebel Heart Tour.
I knew she wasn't just going to do Europe, USA, and Canada. This tour is billed as the biggest tour of her career. I bet South America, Asia, and Australia are coming.

Anyone old enough to remember that Express Yourself was released with two different cover art for the Cassette Single? I had both, just because I had to have both. They were both carried at my local Sam Goody. The one most people remember is the photograph of her dancing. The other was sort of 70's leaning in it's font with her name and song title on it. The alternative cover was not an import, both were released here. Song track / versions are the same. Take a look.

Well… for sure I AM old enough, but I have to say I can’t believe this is the first time ever that I learn about the alternate cover!! No idea! I remember getting the LAP vinyl maxi single and remember too in a trip to Miami going to the stores at the mall and seeing the Oh Father cassette single. I regretted not buying it, but many years later I bought on eBay a sealed copy of it. ;) But this Express Yourself alternate cover never ever saw it at the stores, online or M books. For folks who have not seen this...here are country bands Little Big Town / Sugarland collaborating in concert on a cover of Like a Prayer. It is quite good.
