Well, you’d have Into the groove, Spotlight likely reaching top 10, as well as Beautiful stranger -and maybe American Pie? Speculating about songs that could’ve benefitted and maybe entered the hot 100: Burnin’ Up (thanks to that video!), Love makes the world go round (thanks to Live aid show), Where’s the party (video and enough airplay), Spotlight (AirPlay), Fever (video and enough airplay), Hollywood (video and enough airplay) Much more speculative: Love song (hype alone?), Dear Jessie (video?), sooner or later (Oscar performance?), Bye bye baby (concert video?), drowned world (video?) Juanca, what was the video for Where's The Party?? A concert one? Or one of those sorta' Japanese commercials like the one I think she did for Spotlight? I can't remember seeing one. Oops! I actually meant to write Gambler (video and enough airplay) and Where’s the party (good airplay). Also, The Look of Love had a video but I don’t think that would’ve been a hit... Same for I Want You and Another Suitcase... and the Love Profusion video was probably too late in the era. Hung Up and American Life would’ve likely been bigger, and maybe Sorry, 4 Minutes or even Girls gone wild

It was actually supposed to be the first single from the album...which makes it even more odd. It went from consideration as the first single to not being even the 5th. Even though I like the whole True Blue album I was never 100% sold on Love Makes and on Party. Can't pinpoint what is it exactly. Perhaps the vocals in parts of the songs. I don't know if they would've become the classics the other singles became. But then again... she could do no wrong those days. With an amazing video maybe they would've been big. I think with the amazing Live To Tell they dared to change it all from music to image. And then made a big statement with Papa Don't Preach. I think Love Makes would've not been taken that seriously. Ha! You’re right that Madonna could do no wrong. Over and over had some airplay in our #1 radio station, and Love... also received minor airplay there. Personally, her first non-single that made it to my personal chart was White Heat, which I loved and made it to the top; then Love Makes the World Go Round made my top 3. I really liked the Latino party vibe of it, with that percussion and the lalala outro. Plus, this was one of my mom’s favorite songs off True Blue (alongside LIB and TB). Later on, Can’t stop made my top 10, too.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to be in those artist/label meetings where singles are decided!! You know, to hear the difference of ideas, how each supports their own ideas, etc. Or the fights! ha ha. For example I LOVED Till Death Do Us Part from Like A Prayer. I wonder if it was ever considered a contender against Keep It Together... I hardly every or should I say NEVER hear anybody say anything about that song. Per Like a Prayer, I vaguely recall that she wanted to release "Love Song" but Prince refused to do a video, so she crapped that idea. I know that during the 89 - 90 era, she basically could have released anything and it would have been a hit, I am not so sure Love Song would have been the best choice. This was a long era in my personal chart. Interestingly though, Till Death Do Us Part was the official 3rd single in our #1 pop station, peaking in the top 5. It was a multi-week #1 in my personal chart and my second favorite song in the album, and is my favorite non-US single ever. Dear Jessie and Spanish eyes also made my top 5. But I didn’t care much for Love Song, and I don’t think it would’ve been a hit, especially considering that the better Oh Father barely made the top 20. Hype and video could’ve helped it of course but not for much I think.

Alan Hunter on SiriusXM last weekend said that was Angel was set to be the lead single from Madonna's 2nd album until she recorded Like A Virgin and we all know how that turned out.

I don’t think either it would’ve been the best single choice. It wasn’t the massive explosion of pop you would’ve expected from these two together. Having said that though, I loved the song since day one. I was obsessed with Prince and Madonna those days so you can imagine having both together in this song. I didn’t care it wasn’t really commercial. It was perhaps one of the ones I played the most of the album. Although I liked really the whole album, ha ha. I wouldn’t skip any song. Not even Act Of Contrition. I thought it was SO COOL.

Well Oh Father was considered a flop peaking at #20. Crazy. I remember clearly those days. I was so disappointed, ha ha. She broke her string of I think 16 Top 5 singles in a row. Noooo!! LOL Awesome song and video.

The chorus is Ray Of Light’s Sky Fits Heaven always reminded me of Till Death Do Us Part.

It is probably my favorite ballad of hers. The video was amazing and definitely in my top 5 videos, along with Express Yourself, Like a Prayer, Bad Girl, and Frozen. Honorable Mentions to: Open Your Heart, Vogue, Justify My Love, and Ghosttown. Edit: I quoted your wrong post, but I am too lazy to go back and fix it :)

David Fincher was the one who convinced Madonna to release OF as a single. He did that incredible video and when it peaked at #20 and ended her Top 10 streak, she called him and said "You ruined me."
But, all was forgiven with the Vogue video.

So glad "Oh Father" was released- and after that, she every so often went with not-so-top-40-friendly singles. "Bad Girl," "Bedtime Story" and "Human Nature" were essential single releases/videos in her career. Even some big hits weren't exactly accessible, screams-hit material- i.e.e "Live to Tell," "Justify My Love," Erotica."

Now it is a total skip for me. I know, blasphemy :)

Live to tell was the beginning of my standom for Madonna. I was a fan, but in 84-85 I was a Cyndi Lauper stan. LTT was a left field, career shaping hit. Her best vocal performance thus far, with a subtle instrumental that highlighted her subdued but emotional vocal, and then the unorthodox structure that included a long intro, the almost silent transition to what’s a unique bridge with a different melody. Quite a long song, too, but it works for me. It’s one of my favorite ballads from her.

Yes, it is, MX. :)
Juanca- it remains my No. 2 M song, period. That instrumental break, and then the bridge- chills-inducing.

While i adore the three albums i'll write, God Control > Dua, Gaga, Jessie Ware albums.
If Madonna wants, she can record and release the best dance record of the decade. GC and I Don't Search I Find prove it.

Billboard Top 10 from 35 years ago:

July 6, 1985
01 02 Sussudio - Phil Collins (1st and only week at #1) 02 03 A View To a Kill - Duran Duran 03 04 Raspberry Beret - Prince & The Revolution 04 01 Heaven - Bryan Adams 05 06 The Search Is Over - Survivor 06 08 Would I Lie To You? - The Eurythmics 07 13 You Give Good Love - Whitney Houston 08 14 Everytime You Go Away - Paul Young 09 12 Voices Carry - Til Tuesday 10 05 Angel - Madonna
Angel was a fast climber and it fell fast. Wrong choice for a single. But, the Hot 100 had a strong Top 5. Hard to break into.

Just a last followup on our chat on "Causing a Commotion." Like we have said, it stalled for 3 weeks at #2 on the Hot 100. I remembered incorrectly what held it out of the #1 spot. I thought the whole time it was "Bad" by Michael Jackson. In reality, the first two weeks at #2, "Bad" was at #1. For it's third week at #2, "I Think We're Alone Now" jumped over it from #3 to take the #1 spot. Below is the the top 10 from that time frame. Attachment Deleted

Of course, the "phantom" top 10 for those 1985 weeks is "Into the Groove." With the airplay and sales it had, it would be lodged comfortably inside the top 10.

According to some, one of Levitating's songwriters Sarah Hudson shared some old photos of Madonna in her stories on IG. It might mean Levitating would be the next single with a Madonna feature.

That feature with Dua Lipa sounds interesting. I’ll be up for M doing a few more features that work for her. How about a La Isla Bonita remix of Mamacita?

Wait was Levitating written for Madame X and scrapped? It's one of my favorites from Dua. A remix to get Madonna back on the Hot 100 would be amazing!

can you imagine hearing Justify My Love on the radio today, let alone 29 years ago? It's mindboggling.
