Rob Sheffield is probably the most bitter writer in entertainment journalism.

It was a typical Jennifer Lopez Vegas revue. Feathers, body-suit, sparkles, ten million back-up dancers... if you enjoy that from her, then congrats, you probably loved it.
But it did not work as a Motown tribute at all. It was just... BIZARRE.

I can't find links to the performances so I can't speak on them but what I can speak on are the winners. Dua getting BNA was unexpected but a pleasant surprise. TIA sweeping the non-album categories was ok as far as politics go but the song itself sucks. I wanted Cardi to win a big 4 award but rap album will do for the time being. I'm just glad we got to see H.E.R. and Kacey getting televised awards and having such genuine reactions. I was rooting for Post for AOTY eventhough I was ready for him to be totally snubbed which I think he did I'm not sure. Drake's speech was great too and Ari getting her 1st Grammy on a very decent category was satisfying. Overall, judging from a few clips I've seen, it was a solid ceremony.

Post-haste-get-him-some-Melanin had a great night. He was a lot of things at the Grammy's... mediocre, off-key, a fog creature. One thing he was not was snubbed. Him receiving multiple nominations and getting a prime time performance slot with an iconic band was more than enough.

Jlo did good from a performance standpoint. As far as a tribute, meh

Gambino caused me to go 0-4 lol Gambino effed a lot of people up I am sure. I went 1-3 in the big categories on my original predictions ignore me getting shook at literally the last minute and thinking Brandi was going to sweep. Overall I went 12-6, not too terrible. The preliminary ratings this year were 17.95 million with a 5.0 in the 18-49 demo. This is down from last year's 19.81 million/5.9, but will probably tick upward a bit when the time zone-adjusted numbers are in later. Last year's show started with a preliminary 5.4 before being adjusted up to a final 5.9, for an idea of what kind of adjustment to expect. tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily-ratings/tv-ratings-sunday-feb-10-2019/

Childish Gambino was the betting favorite for Record of the Year and #2 in the odds for Song of the Year, so I'm surprised people are trying to sell either as a shock.

There were no true sweeps so people got a chance to shine

Thought JLo's performance was an abomination. It was a solid performance, but not as a Motown tribute

Yeah, no Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor, Ariana, Bruno I agree, definitely weren’t enough big names. Especially with no performances from ari, drake, Gambino or Kendrick who are some of the biggest names right now

Yeah, no Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor, Ariana, Bruno That's not the final number - as I believe was already covered in this thread. That number only accounts for the primetime portion and doesn't include the west coast feed. Final should be out in a few hours. As a general rule, avoid these "facts" accounts.

2m (or less) is not a big drop considering how little people watch linear television these days. Surely Adele would've helped but she attended only the afterparty this time around.

Having caught up with most of the performances. Drake is still the winner! Canada won, Toronto won.
And Alicia Keys is striking and beautiful.

The drop is alright, all things considered. The only big live event this year (or last year, actually) to skip a ratings drop was the 2019 Golden Globes, which stayed flat.
The days of Adele, Whitney, Rihanna, Taylor, Katy and Bruno pushing this to 40M viewers are over though.

Near-final ratings are in: slight decline (to a new low) in adults 18-49, but a slight increase in overall viewership (to 19.9 million).
To the extent that you weren't writing last year's show off as a disastrous fluke, then I'd say this year's stability is a good result all things considered.

Yeah good for them. Michelle Obama probably helped. Nobody knew she was there, so I don’t know that even her appearance was of any factor?

The Grammys used to be good and had clout. Now it’s a political cheese fest

What was political about this year's show? Unless you think Michelle Obama being there is a political statement.
