So... who gets to do the Aretha tribute? Personally Iβm hoping for a reunion of the original Divas Live line-up. It would be the 20th anniversary of that too.

I'm already highkey dreading it. If you think people were doing the most over the least about Sam not being a fan of Michael Jackson's music, you are not anywhere near prepared for the skull dragging that will commence if the Grammys pick the 'wrong' people to honor the Queen of Soul. And there is very little overlap between the group of 'right' people and the group of people in the Grammys' contact list so this could become a skull dragging very quickly.
I could live with Beyonce and/or Kelly; after that it becomes extremely risky.

^Lord, help us all. EDIT: This was in reference to the idea of Sam Smith doing an Aretha tribute.
Very curious to see if the expansion to 8 nominees in the top categories leads to more diversity (race/gender but also more alternative/independent/critical choices) or if it'll just be a larger rubber-stamping of the Hot 100.

Knowing the Grammys, theyβll get Arianaβs ass to do it. No thank you.

Wouldnβt surprise me if Jennifer Hudson gets it. I donβt think thereβs a question in that. Aretha authorized her to play her in the biopic Grammys will call her first

Karen Clark-Sheard Jazmine Sullivan Patti Labelle Fantasia Yolanda Adams
Don't even try having mediocre singers on the stage. It's also in the best interest that mediocre singers DECLINE because if queen Madonna can get fucked up for trying to sing a Prince classic imagine if you don't have clout . Black twitter will serve you on the side of a steak.

Sneak preview of this, now playing in VMA land. Y/y?

People forget that there was already an Aretha Franklin tribute back in 2011, and the lineup got praise.
I don't see why they can't put together another great lineup.

JESUS, MOHAMED, MOSES, COCO prophetic dont try the same foolishness that MTV pulled. call Kelly Clarkson too she has a album that sounds like new school Aretha soul.

So, who's gonna squeak out a monster single in the next month - just in time for a ROTY Grammy nomination this year?

Sigh, why have such a soulless singer pay tribute to the most soulful singer?

Sigh, why have such a soulless singer pay tribute to the most soulful singer? I think we all know at least one rea$on for it. But besides that... I personally don't subscribe to this notion that only soul singers should pay tribute to a soul singer. Aretha's influence blankets the entire industry - all genres - and I think it's appropriate to showcase that. There's quite a diverse line-up from different genres according to the article, which I feel is kinda the point. Plus, if nothing else, it helps introduce - or increase interest in - Aretha to an audience that may otherwise not know or care. There's really not one ounce of harm in it in my book.

I don't think the singers have to be in the "soul genre" but Aretha was known for her soulful style of singing. So it's kind of insulting to chose someone who is almost the exact opposite. Like choosing someone with zero rhythm for a James Brown or MJ tribute, or someone with zero musicianship for a Prince tribute or someone who can't sing at all for a Barbra Streisand tribute.

Like choosing someone with zero rhythm for a James Brown or MJ tribute, or someone with zero musicianship for a Prince tribute or someone who can't sing at all for a Barbra Streisand tribute. Feelings and opinions on any given singer vary, so what's insulting to you isn't to someone else, etc. There's also varying opinions on who can and can't sing, or sing well enough. it's all subjective. You're never going to make everyone happy, and it's supposed to be a celebration of Aretha's legacy and incredible influence, not a whose voice is worthy enough to pay tribute to her. I think that's missing the point. There's very few people who can even come close to her level of god-given soulfulness. We can shade Ariana and call her soulless all day if we choose, but that doesn't mean she wasn't influenced by Aretha and/or isn't worthy of paying her respects to her. Same goes for other singers who aren't technically soulful singers in our varied opinions.

I didn't mean it had to be a soul singer, I just meant a singer with soul. Singers from any genre can sing with soul.
