Why are we talking a top 10 debut for Shawn when the song’s gonna debut on this week’s chart off the Thursday sales and weekend radio?

The sole reason Shawn probably won't debut at #1, maybe not even the top 5, is because he released on a Thursday instead of a Friday. The iTunes ranking is indicative that it could have been possible, and I already caught it on the radio a couple times today. Don't know what streaming will be like though.

Mess it didn't peak higher. I still hear it on radio today. What blocked it? It's entire 7 week stay at number three was blocked by only three songs: Janet's "That's The Way Love Goes" at number one and then Silk's former #1 "Freak Me" and SWV's future #1 "Weak" taking the runner-up spot. It was a highly competitive time!

Shawn Mendes is not the 70M streams type of artist. That is what the current #1 is getting. #1 debut not likely I'll be very surprised if this song reaches 30M streams.

Being number one on iTunes in 2018 is only slightly better than being number one on Singles Sales in 2003.

The video for "Psycho" just dropped, apparently. Post Malone is coming for that second number-one. It won't be number-one this week, of course, but it may have a good shot at dethroning "God's Plan" the following week. Drake might not even get to ten weeks at #1, this time. As far as I'm concerned, that's fine by me. Even "One Dance" was a better song than "God's Plan", IMO, and I thought that one was somewhat weak. It's not a bad song, but it's had its time. I'm rooting for "Psycho"! EDIT: I did not realize that someone had already beaten me to it. :(

I'll be politer. Hip-Hop seems to have taken over Spotify in 2015, while building in 2013 and 2014.
Why? I don't know. I don't know what is different between today's Hip-Hop scene and 5 years ago and why the current massive popularity did not manifest in the other metrics of the early 2010s. If Hip-Hop has been the monster of choice of everyone for 20 years (like some have contended), where were those sales or consumption figures in 2011 or 2013? We had Drake, Nicki, Lil Wayne… but there wasn't this overwhelming monopoly.
So to your greater point, what happened?

There is a ~34k points difference between GP and Psycho and the latter is falling harder despite being only four weeks old. God's Plan's 10th week at #1 (tracking week started today) is almost locked, only an Adele surprise release would dethrone Drake this week. And... I really hope Psycho reaches #1, but I don't see it happening before the album release.

Am I the only one who'd rather have more #1 songs than the same old boring #1? I don't want or care about "Psycho" getting to #1, cos ugh, another bore, but "God's Plan" spending two weeks at #1 was two weeks more than it deserved, let alone twenty. At least let's keep our fingers crossed for renovation, soon.

No one wants a song spending 10 weeks at no 1 unless its their fav Even that... Heck, I rooted so hard for "Havana" to get #1, and the second it got there I was like ok thanks bye. I don't care much about the amount of weeks a song spends at #1, just that it got there. So when a song takes forever to get out of the summit, it's such a bore.

The pure sales have not happened - and CHR radio hasn't really responded to the streaming popularity of the genre - since we know radio always chases trends. Even if Pop ignored, you'd think Rhythmic/Urban formats would dominate radio ratings if the audience was seeking that genre. The dominance on one platform is pretty amazing - and if it weren't for Billboard's H100 ratio + album consumption inclusion, it would largely be ignored.

^Regarding hip-hop/rap streaming dominance, I doubt that it's the majority of people (although it may be the majority of teenagers), more likely is that it's by far the most intense crowd of listeners. Likely most of the hip-hop/rap listeners are streaming music for several hours a day, while the mythical "general public" streams music much less often. Which is why radio is probably not fully on board, because that has to play to a very broad audience. I think this always happens with whatever music is popular among younger people.
Also, as many people have pointed out, it's cyclical. In my chart-watching life (since the early/mid-90s), hip-hop has been the dominant genre more often than not on the charts (the biggest surprise to me was the late 00s/early 10s dominance of pop and EDM — that felt much more like an outlier than hip-hop does).

I wont mind to see Drake 20 weeks on top as long he Blocks trash Malone I got a question for you Leo. You been on here for a year or two it looks like. You've made 13,000 posts. Do you get a message in your mail that says "Warning Level Increased" every single time you make a post that calls an artist trash? Or says something vaguely negative about an artist? I think there's something wrong with their automatic mod system right now. I keep getting this "Warning Level Increased" message for making relatively mundane statements. And I can't imagine people getting these messages every time they say something negative about a random artist the way you just did now. I think I probably get the message automatically because multiple accounts are abusing the "report" button. But I don't really know. But I see posts like yours every day. I don't have to go out of my way to look for them. So it's hard for me to imagine that your 3 more "Trash Malone" posts away from being blocked, since you've been active for so long.

Can someone explain how and why rap took over Spotify? Makes no sense to me. Because that's what the majority of people want to listen to these days. Don't know what concept here is difficult to comprehend. Wait, hit the brakes here! You're on the right track, just wrong wording. "Majority" means over 50%, and I seriously doubt over 50% of people in the US purposely seek out rap/hip-hop music as their core music taste. Instead, what you mean is that rap/hip-hop is the genre with the highest amount of people seeking it out, which is probably true, given the numbers we have. There's just so many genres out there that I find it incredibly hard to believe any one of them has the majority of people as fans. It's just that everyone's music tastes are so dramatically different from each other than when trends begin to change, whichever genre has the most followers gets to be ruler of the industry for a bit. So, generally, I agree with you even to the point where it's not a hard concept to grasp. (People just like what they like and right now more people like rap/hip-hop than any other genre. Next year it could be polka!) Just wanted to clarify the meaning of "majority" here and clean up the wording on the matter.

I have no "receipts" to back me up, but in general it seems younger audiences like hip-hop music more than older audiences. Along with that, younger people traditionally embrace new technology such as streaming so hi-hop doing well in streaming makes sense to me.
