Wait, what did John Lennon do? Abused his wife. Wait, I thought John and Yoko were a happy couple?

Wait, what did John Lennon do? Abused his wife. And supposedly his son Julian. Lennon was not a good guy. He sang all you need is love then went home and abused his wife and kid.

A month ago after Hedley performed in Halifax, a friend of mine on Facebook said something like "anyone who to see Hedley last night have something very wrong with them" or something.
Now, whether one chooses to still support artists who have questionable pasts is up to them. But I was annoyed at the hypocrisy of this person because he's constantly posting videos and comments of praise for classic rock bands and artists, some of whom are known to have been violent toward women, abusive, or Pete Townsend. So I replied saying something about how he loves John Lennon and James Brown. And his response was "but their music is actually good."
So really, when it comes to artists and their bad behaviour and #boycotting, people only do it when it suits them. Suddenly the "something very wrong with them" was no longer about the sexual exploitation charges against Hedley but because that person didn't like their music and they were able to justify that with something secondary like sexual assault. Which, to me, is in so much more poor taste than supporting abusive artists anyway. Using sexual assault to support your own music elitism and snobbery is disgusting.

Being more or less publicly a piece of s**t is something I've come to expect from literally every celebrity ever so it doesn't ruin their music for me anymore. After hearing of so many horrible f**king things it has just become a white noise at this point, too tiring and pointless to fight against

Many, many performers (actors, musicians, artists, politicians) are emotionally unbalanced. It's why they perform in the first place. Doesn't mean they are all bad, but if you go in knowing that, it softens the blow when your favorite disappoints with behavior.

And his response was "but their music is actually good." So really, when it comes to artists and their bad behaviour and #boycotting, people only do it when it suits them. I think there are more layers to it than that. Some examples: 1. When did you find out the artists abused women (or whatever the issue is)? For instance, I listened to The Beatles music before I knew about Lennon, so I had an attachment to the music before knowing about the artist. That is tougher to separate than a new artist with a past where I don’t know the music so I can go ahead and dismiss the artist before having any attachment. 2. Many of the older artists are dead, so supporting their music isn’t directly benefiting them in the way purchasing and legally streaming music of a living abuser is literally giving them a career.

What I don’t get are people who won’t pack politicians who are abusers, etc but then turn around and support musicians who are those things. If you can separate the art and the artist, why can’t you separate the politician and their politics if they’re different?

Which goes back to the point I tried to make last time I came up. Two categories
#1
For those who can separate music and politics - the question is simple --- you like the music or you don't
#2
For those who can't separate music from politics, if you take the time to dig through the past of every single artist that ever put music out, you may find that everyone has a past, especially rockstars. If you toss out an artist that has done something morally objectionable in her/his past and do that for all, what is left? Re: John Lennon, many men from the 60s probably treated women in a a way that would not be acceptable today - that was the culture. Women in large part were housewives.
If you selectively decide because you happen to like the music, then that circles you back to category #1

If you selectively decide because you happen to like the music, then that circles you back to category #1 There are degrees in what people find morally objectionable, though. I put the abuse of women on a different level than drug use, for instance. Additionally, for me it makes a difference how “known” someone’s transgressions are as well. Part of why I don’t want to support someone like Chris Brown or R Kelly is because of the message their success sends to girls and boys about what is acceptable treatment of girls and women. That comes from the incidents of those artists being very well known. As we see in this thread, many people don’t know John Lennon’s past. You even imply that in terms of saying “dig through the past...” I think if you have to dig through the past of an artist, that’s different than someone who is widely known to have done something AND even writes music about their transgressions (see R Kelly writing songs about sex when he’s known for having sex with minors).

America is cancelled for giving not one but two known abusers in the top ten. Doesn't help that X is the most cringe rapper around "I'm not afraid to throat f**k your underage sister" - Y'all favorite rapper... for some reason. Never forget Yep, and this is all in the era of the #MeToo movement. Strange how there is a double standard and people are willing to grant exceptions for some people. something something separate the art from the artist but it's pretty hard when the artist is a domestic abuser or threatens pedophilia but that's just me i guess because clearly everyone else here can do it with no issue

Which goes back to the point I tried to make last time I came up. Two categories #1 For those who can separate music and politics - the question is simple --- you like the music or you don't #2 For those who can't separate music from politics, if you take the time to dig through the past of every single artist that ever put music out, you may find that everyone has a past, especially rockstars. If you toss out an artist that has done something morally objectionable in her/his past and do that for all, what is left? Re: John Lennon, many men from the 60s probably treated women in a a way that would not be acceptable today - that was the culture. Women in large part were housewives. Yeah domestic abuse and pedophilia are on a different level than doing drugs, trashing a hotel, getting into a fight, etc.

Has there been a chart star who straight-up murdered someone (proven)? Can't seem to recall.

Still an even weirder threat to throw "underage" in the mix.

It's a somewhat shameful situation because the murder is the whole reason he's famous. It's not like Snoop Dogg or Gucci Mane where they were accused of murder after they got famous.

Remy Ma came pretty close to murder, but calling her a chart "star" is a huge stretch...
