I'm just saying it's like a pink/purple/glittery glam shot. That feels super girly, and yeah, I think that does turn off a lot of listeners. Hate to say it!

I don't know about that. Poison was plenty popular with green and purple and glittery make up.
I guess I don't see how it "excludes" anyone. Help me out here.

I don’t hate the cover, but I don’t love it. I get the glitter tears and the serious look, they’re clearly going very literal here - which is fine. The cover serves its purpose, Carrie looks stunning and it definitely catches your eye. Not that physical sales matter much anymore, but if I were looking through albums at the store, the bright color theme and glittery tears would definitely catch my eye. So from a marketing standpoint, this cover actually works, IMO. To me, it works as a marketing standpoint to teenage girls. If I were looking through albums at a store, I would see this and think "Oh, that is definitely not for me!". I think simply using a background color of black over pink would've made a world of difference. If the music is strong, it won't matter though.

What's the difference if the cover is "girly"? Are male fans really going to say they are alienated because of a picture, and consider not buying the album?

Straight guys want women artists to be feminine don't they? Was Shania hurt in album sales by the song "Man, I feel like a woman"? No

It just humors me to zero fucking end how conversations like these never occur for all of the consistently shitty and cheap and random covers and artwork for *any* male country act. That is why I threw up a defense on the last page. I couldn’t care less if someone doesn’t like the picture; it’s the blatant double-standard that’s frustrating beyond belief.

I think a straight casual male fan is less likely to give it a listen. Because of a picture? Yes, because of a picture. I'll likely purchase this regardless, just stating what the typical straight male country listener will think.

I have seen these conversations happen in a lot of male artists threads tough. I believe off the top of my head I know Keith Urban's latest got called "creepy", Luke Bryan's single cover for "Light It Up" was criticized for his facial expression, One of Blake Shelton's got criticized for how fake he looked, Chris Young keeps getting criticized for not wearing his cowboy hat anymore. Those are off the top of my head, I know there's others too. This cover while not boring like a lot of country covers (both male and female), does look cheap and kinda ugly to me. I like what they were going for but it was bad execution. I also really dislike her hair color here for some reason. As for it being "girly" I do agree it'll be marginal any effects of it, but it will factor in on some people's purchasing and listening. It's dumb honestly because it's after all just a cover but I've seen it happen irl so I don't doubt it will happen.

No She wasn't hurt in album sales because that wasn't the cover of the album but a song on the album. I'd put good money that straight male country fans would make up the smallest percentage of sales in regards to the 'Come On Over' album. How much "MIFLAW" affected that would be hard to say but I'd still feel comfortable with my bet.

Which I think was meant to represent his "Moods"?

Which I think was meant to represent his "Moods"? Yeah! It was just a VERY bad execution of the idea you just presented. It ended up super amateur-looking. The shot of him sitting would be a good (even if simple) album cover.

In my opinion it doesn’t matter what the cover looks like because it depends on the material that is being made by any singer. If I like the material I will buy the album no matter what the cover looks like. I go by the songs not album cover.

But the point I'm making is that there are people out there who'll be turned off by the cover. I just asked my co-workers (both straight males) their thoughts on it and they said it looks too young for them first, then they felt like it's going to be all sad songs about girl things so they don't know if they'd really give it a second look.

Me as a Carrie Underwood fan it looks little teenage high school girl who loves glitter. . But her new song is awesome and if the rest of the CD is as good, I’ll sure buy it no matter what the cover indicates it might sound like.

I don't know what kind of people some of you guys know, but any fan of Carrie I know, male or female, straight or gay, wouldn't not buy an album because of a picture on the album. I don't know why people have to create issues where there aren't any?

I don't know why people have to create issues where there aren't any? We aren’t talking about the Carrie fan. We’re talking about the casual fan. The ones who’ll hear the song on the radio and maybe if they see the album on the shelf or on amazon or on iTunes will make a purchase. She’s got a big enough fan base + she’s well known enough where this would be a minuscule problem, but it could still turn off a few would be purchases.

I guess I'm having a hard time believing that an album cover would stop someone who wants the album, even a casual fan, just because Carrie has glitter tears.
Plus, it could work the other way too, and make people buy the album, because they're interested.

I mainly stick to Carrie Fans when it comes to Carrie single threads...at least there we can see chart updates and post how we’re feeling, even if it doesn’t “add to the the discussion.” Sometimes just a little too many rules here honestly. Ugh, please. CarrieFans is primarily drooling fanboys/girls who lack any impartiality and who have zero tolerance for even the slightest criticism. Pulse is very fair to all tastes and points of view.

This Highway interview is also excellent. It turns out she's a lot more comfortable talking about her injuries than I thought she'd be. At the very end the DJ mentions Carrie showing him a "before" photo of her busted grill and how bad it looked.
I also liked hearing her talk about her introverted nature and how this album is pushing her boundaries. Good stuff. Thanks to user Maddkat for capping it.

I guess I'm having a hard time believing that an album cover would stop someone who wants the album, even a casual fan, just because Carrie has glitter tears. Plus, it could work the other way too, and make people buy the album, because they're interested. 1. We know, you've said this like 8 times now. We've heard you. 2. As a big Carrie fan, I will be purchasing the album the moment the physical copy hits the stores in September. And as a Carrie fan, my enjoyment of the music will have nothing whatsoever to do with the album cover, because I love Carrie and know I will enjoy it no matter what. But when I remove my focus from the fact that this is an album from somebody that I am a fan of, and just think about the album cover by itself without my prior love for Carrie clouding my judgement, I can see why it might not be the best image to hook casual listeners. For example, if I were to pick up a new album from, say, Christina Aguilara that had that same album cover, I would probably not even take a second look at it. I am not a fan of hers, and that album cover does nothing to make me psychologically think that anything on the album might interest me. Compare it to the Blown Away cover. That cover is BEAUTIFUL!!! It is just so well done, from the picture, to the fonts, to the outfits, to the overall aesthetic... It creates an air of mystery and moodiness that a casual listener might find intriguing. If I picked up a random album that looked like the Blown Away album, I would instantly be interested, even if I had never purchased an album from that artist before. Hell, even if it was a new artist I had never heard of, it might be enough to make me make an impulse purchase! Her Greatest Hits did an awesome job of that too, honestly. When you compare the Cry Pretty album cover to some of her previous incredible covers, it is pretty obvious why some people think it might be an album that caters less to the impulse-purchasing crowd... As a big name she can afford such a thing, because her fans are going to flock out to the stores and digital retailers to purchase it regardless, which will lead to strong sales. But once all her fans have purchased it, some impulse buyers might buy it on the strength of her name alone, some might buy it based on the strength of the singles, and some might look at the album cover and decide the album is not for them because it looks a little "girly". It won't have a huge effect, but I think it is foolish to just assume that that population of people doesn't exist because WE are mostly all fans of Carrie here. A lot of this discussion undoubtedly stems from the fact that Carrie has such a history of amazing album covers as well. This is by far the least interesting cover out of everything she's ever put out, which is just a little shocking because her artistic direction is normally so beyond reproach.

I'm not sure what I thought the conversation was going to be about in this thread when I clicked on it, but I definitely did not think I was going to be reading that men don't listen to music with pink or purple colors on the cover, which is incredibly dumb, or a critical discussion on the effect a cover has on impulse buyers.
