I honestly don't even understand how songs go recurrent.
Also, ugh that "Whatever It Takes" STILL hasn't made top 20.

Whatever It Takes still not made Top 20. :'( Well of course it hasn't, there's no major network-TV sports event being broadcast at the moment

I have. And there have been plenty of bad #1's in every decade since the 50's. I have as well For this discussion, we should remember what a #1 song actually is. It is #1 and most popular for the week in time it represents. For that week the biggest song in the country. Being a # song does not necessarily elevate the song above others for all time. In many cases the #1 song got to #1 because it was the right song for the pop culture, fads, styles and events of the day. In most cases, what is popular today will not be popular tomorrow. Styles change, opinions change, times change, many songs do not hold up well over time simply because they were written for the time they became popular. So it is no wonder that in this thread and its companion thread in YOP, dozens of songs are being mentioned. Has anyone here heard every single Hot 100 #1? I'd think that'd be interesting, and I'd love to hear the opinion of worst #1 from someone who actually has. I have, that's why I said "Mr. Custer". There are crappy number ones from every era though...those novelties from the 50s and 60s, bland generic ballads from the mid 70s and 80s, those simple tuneless songs from the mid 00s hip-hop domination, the generic dance tunes from the turbo-pop days. We only remember the good stuff and the bad/forgettable songs are eventually lost to time. I own and know them all. “Disco Duck” gets my vote. But it’s all subjective - millions loved it back in its day. And they would have thought “God’s Plan” was a joke it was so bad. So it really depends on context. I did not realize that many people had heard every Hot 100 #1. Y'all have encouraged me to get my knowledge up lol.

Bad At Love & Alone are the best 2 consecutive singles in awhile imo. I REALLY hope somehow Alone takes off!

I honestly don't even understand how songs go recurrent. If a song has been on the chart for 20 weeks, is losing points, and is below #50, it will be removed. OR If a song has been on the chart for 52 weeks, is losing points, and is below #25, it will be removed.

Message About Ariana: As many of you in our discussion now know, Ariana Grande is reportedly expected to release her lead single from her upcoming album called, 'No Tears Left To Cry' either this Friday (4/20) or next Friday (4/27). It is very clear from the title that Grande will be explaining her experience and her emotions about the horrific attack that took place at her concert in Manchester last May. However, the problem with Grande releasing this Friday is that it will come at a time that Drake is continuing to dominate the charts with both God's Plan and now Nice For What. But if Ariana releases a music video, gets hourly radio promotion from iHeartRadio and has very high vocals similar to some of Whitney, Adele and Mariah Carey's stuff, she will likely not have any problems at least with the streaming mechanism of her songs. Ariana won't have to worry about iTunes as she should dominate, unlike how Nicki struggled even though she hit #1 on iTunes with Chun Li. Another good point that brings up is that Nicki struggled however with no radio promotion as of yet, I doubt that was her lead singles for NM4. But coming back to Ariana, if everything complies together, she should sell about 90k or so copies of her single as well as getting 30M streams in her first week, without radio she would likely have a #5-11 debut, with radio likely helping her scenario, this would likely boost her debut position to #4-7. I just don't think unless it's something crazy with Drake dominating like he is Ariana won't be able to get a hot shot debut at #1. Also, I'm concerned that with Post and Drake releasing one week after and with Drake's new and obviously highly anticipated album, Scorpion, that Ariana might not get her #1. So Ariana needs all the possible support she can get in her first week before Post comes to dominate the following week of 4/27. Also ARIANA NEEDS TO PROMOTE EVERY DAY STARTING TOMORROW OR WEDNESDAY ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT HER SINGLE COMING POSSIBLY AS SOON AS THIS FRIDAY!!

Ariana is not going to be number one, unless she's HUGE out of the gate and "Nice For What" completely crashes and burns. And I don't think that will happen. Backstreet Boys, One Direction, Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato have never had number one singles either, it's okay.

Also not big on the two #1's by the Staple Singers, "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again". Hard to believe so many forgettable acts had multiple #1's when the likes of ABBA, Aerosmith, James Taylor or, heck, even Miley Cyrus, only had one apiece - let's not even get into the many legends who could never hit the top. From an objective standpoint, The Staple Singers are anything but "forgettable." They're in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame!

Ariana drops 4/27, that is absolutely happening, it's been confirmed. There's no "or this date" about it.
Post Malone is also dropping his album that same day.
Ariana stands zero chance with that happening. Psycho will go #1 that week, not Ariana.

I said this in another thread a month ago, but with streaming I think the whole "#1 debut" achievement will water down.
Down the line I think most #1 hits will start at #1. It makes sense as streaming has allowed the entire public to access music quicker than ever before, and for a song to literally become the most popular overnight. Technological advancement.
Shape of You, Perfect, God's Plan, Nice for What, Look What You Made Me Do, and I'm the One all debuted #1 (or went directly to #1 following a new remix) the past year. And Humble along with Rockstar debuted #2.
Perhaps we could be seeing similar to what happened to Billboard 200 after Soundscan. (Most #1 albums debut #1 and the #1 debut's either stick or drop like a rock.) Maybe labels will start treating singles like album campaigns where they focus dominantly on the debut week -- late era singles start commonly getting huge radio premieres/deals, superstar remixes, performances, etc during first week to take off (Finesse Remix, Perfect Remix).

I think Ariana making her lead single about the Manchester event is a bad idea. I can see how the intent of that would be to pay respects to what happened, but it can also be seen as using that tragedy as part of her marketing campaign to launch the new era, which could be seen as somewhat crass. She can absolutely have one or several tracks on the album be tributes to the tragedy, but as the lead single? I don't know. I personally think that Manchester will actually not affect her career that much in either a positive or negative way from now on, and that her recording career is separate from that and the music will have to speak for itself.

I do think Ariana has a large chance at a Top 5 debut, but I think #1 is out of the question. Maybe in a weaker week but she's releasing in a very busy period where two streaming juggernauts are dropping material.

glad to see ASAP Forever debuting so high
also Cole's album will make a massive splash on the Hot 100, considering 4YEO was pretty much as boring (in a sense) as Cole could get and it still got an album bomb. imagine if Cole drops some 2014 FHD type sh!t on us

I think the hype around J. Cole has died a long time ago? But we'll see He definitely still has an extremely strong fanbase, and should see strong sales in addition to streams. It's just that the last project dipped out of popular view fairly early, especially compared to the one before that which is still charting, but it had a very strong opening of 492k (second biggest streaming boost of that year behind Drake), 363k of which were sales, and all the tracks entered the top 40 on the Hot 100. He should beat Justin Timberlake's 293k SPS entrance fairly easily imo, and will hold it until Drake (Post Malone may get higher streams the following week, but his sales will be far lower).

^Interesting count of bulleted songs that are not debuts in terms of position change: 7 rising, 6 steady and 6 with backward bullets. Also, as expected, no non-bulleted rising songs.

Nicki Minaj's 'Barbie Tingz' & 'Chun-Li' Debut on Billboard Hot 100
News
By Xander Zellner | April 17, 2018 7:51 AM EDT
The tracks arrive at Nos. 83 and 92, respectively, after one day of streaming and sales tracking.
Nicki Minaj makes her 2018 solo debut on the Billboard Hot 100, as her two new releases, "Barbie Tingz" and "Chun-Li," open at Nos. 83 and 92, respectively, on the chart (dated Apr. 21). The songs enter the Hot 100 after only one day of streaming and sales tracking and four days of radio airplay monitoring.
"Tingz" earned 4.2 million U.S. streams and sold 21,000 downloads in the week ending April 12, following its release that day, according to Nielsen Music. "Chun-Li" logged 3.5 million clicks and sold 20,000 downloads.
Both tracks concurrently debut on the Digital Song Sales chart, at Nos. 13 and 16, respectively.
"Chun-Li" additionally garnered 8.5 million all-format radio audience impressions in the week ending April 15, while "Tingz" drew 7.5 million.
Both tracks are likely to see a sizable gain on next week's Hot 100 (dated April 28), as that chart will encompass the song's first full week of tracking. (Streaming and sales run on a Friday through Thursday tracking cycle, while airplay runs Monday through Sunday.)
Minaj has now earned 86 total entries on the Hot 100, dating back to her first, "Knockout," with Lil Wayne, in 2010. She extends her record for most total Hot 100 appearances among women in the chart's 59-year history (ahead of Taylor Swift's 76), and continues to sport the eighth-most entries among all acts.
As previously reported, Drake replaces himself atop the April 21-dated Hot 100, as his new single "Nice for What" debuts at No. 1, stopping the reign of his own "God's Plan" after 11 weeks on top.
