@unhinged, you made a mistake with my ranking. My ranking for this song was #27, not #2. Just a typo, fixed!

Rock. Posters. Hi there. What song are you upset over the placement of? How Will I Know? I mean I ranked it number 6. I had 8 or 9 songs that had perfect scores. I was looking at Doc, Crazia and Round & Round (Bangwave, if memory serves)

i've always thought Papa Don't Preach was Madonna's most overrated song...not bad, but not Top 10 worthy

I'm more surprised that there are bottom half rankings for this song than anything else. Thought this might accomplish the "no bottom half rankings" feat.

2 vs. 5 left now. I'm cool with either, but Madonna FTW please.

Now the second time this song has finished #3 in a RD, IIRC. Sigh. P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING, I guess.
4 vs 10, still fine with either winner.

This is such a forward-thinking track. The hip-hop influence, the rhythmic focus on the vocal delivery, the ennui throughout while being about a substantive subject, all traits that are so dominant today. This kicked off a very strong run for PSB until the late 90s.
The top 2 is simply immaculate; master-level pop songs that have been stayed distinctive and instantly noticeable from the first second.

And may I asked why? I'm just leaving quick responses as the reveals go by. Your quoting of the entire reveal post takes up too much space and makes the page load longer, especially when you make like 12 posts at once. At least just quote the song name instead of quoting the entire post. Anyways....uggggggggghhhhhhh, f**k off with my last top 10. 18 vs. 39, "Papa Don't Preach" is decent, but it absolutely doesn't deserve to win this.

The Top 2
When I began this rankdown IΒ thought Prince would end up in the Top 2 with something from maybe Steve Winwood, Whitney Houston or the Pet Shop Boys.
I figured Madonna would rank high but I wasn't too sure where she would land considering she had three songs on the list which could split her votes.
With only 3 points separating the two I re-counted the numbers three times to make sure they were right.
This is the closest the Top 2 have been in these 80's rankdowns...
So here it is...
#2
Kiss Prince and The Revolution
Total Points: 2049
Billboard Hot 100: 1(2)
Billboard Top 100 of 1986: 19
From: Parade
Lead single from the Purple Ones eighth studio album Parade, this was a big hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and the Top 10 in almost a dozen other territories.
Following the singers death in 2016, the song re-charted onΒ the Hot 100 and peaked at 23 based on digital sales alone.
filthy loses his No. 1 and minus one outlier this ranked inside the Top 50 on all of your lists... Sambalada - 2Β singingrulebritannia Β - 4Β Troy - 25Β filthy - 1Β rgreen0625 Β -Β 18Β Β Β Β newpower - 24Β Ezekiel 23:20β21 Β - 2Β π―π² lucy88 π―π² - 24Β

#1
Papa Don't Preach Madonna
Total Points: 2052 Billboard Hot 100: 1(2)
Billboard Top 100 of 1986: 29
From: True Blue
Second single from True Blue, this was released in early June of 1986 and had reached the top by August 16, 1986 (which subsequently was Madonna's 28th birthday). It was her 4th No. 1 on the chart.
It helped propel its parent album to the top of the Billboard 200 where it spent 5 consecutive weeks.
Sambalada , Glove Slap , Juanca and myself all grab perfect rankings and it joins "How Will I Know" and "West End Girls" for the most No. 1 placements.
It was the only song to place inside the Top 50 on all of your lists and in fact didn't rank any lower than No. 46...which in my opinion meansΒ it does deserve to win this...
Sambalada - 1Β singingrulebritannia Β - 22Β Troy - 46Β filthy - 25Β rgreen0625 Β - 31Β newpower - 21Β Ezekiel 23:20β21 Β - 7Β π―π² lucy88 π―π² - 10Β

Hope you enjoyed the rankdown!
Thanks for participating and for all the wonderful conversation that took place about this awesome year in music!
Thank you all again for your support this week, it really did help me make it through this rankdown during whatΒ has been a really tough time for me and my family. I tried my best to not get too gruff about commentsΒ but I maybe slipped a bit yesterday...Β
Moving along to the Billboard 1987 Rankdown next and submissions are due August 18th!
Also, more to come about the Billboard 1983 Rankdown which I will be taking over in the near future...

I imagine others will be more annoyed with this result, but I'm fine with it. "Papa" has always been one of my favorite Madonna songs. The Madonna songs in 1987 probably won't receive similarly favorable treatment...well, other than one. As for Prince, well, one of the songs in 1987 is going to be quite high for me... Great job hosting once again, Unhinged. This rankdown, given the circumstances surrounding it, was especially remarkable.

37. Life in a Northern Town (75): I heard this one for the first time in the early 00s, right around the time a techno version got popular. I do like the dreamy chorus, but the verses felt underwhelming. I discovered it around 1997 when the Dario G song "Sunchyme" came out which sampled LIANT. The following year, Jakkaranda sampled the same bits as used in "Sunchyme" for their song "Never Let You Go" which was heard in the movie The Parent Trap. I thought the Jakkaranda song had better verses than the original song.

it's strange how someone who professes to HATE 80s Madonna would rank an '86 song of hers 44 spots above me, since i adore 80s Madonna (even though this song was just decent)...still shocked i was the lowest ranker for this

it's strange how someone who professes to HATE 80s Madonna would rank an '86 song of hers all the way up at #2:sip2: Co-sign with the shock that Janet gets not one Top 10 (not one? Really?). I also thought "How Will I Know" would've been at least Top 5.
