Meant to post this before the reveals started. Some more lost tracks ....
This remake didn't have longevity on the charts. While it peaked in the Top 5, it quickly disappeared which was surprising for a band of its stature.
Recorded after Tina's massive comeback success, this duet was the sixth and final single from Adams' blockbuster album. When it reached #15 on the Hot 100, 'Reckless' became only the third album (after 'Thriller' and 'Born In The USA') to yield six Top 15 hits.
Perhaps typical of many hits of UK bands that sprouted during the decade, this track fit neatly into 1986 (it hit #12 in the Hot 100) ... but did not age well through the years. They attempted a follow-up without success and never appeared on the charts again.
By their fourth studio release, Culture Club struggled with personal challenges. The previous album was a critical and commercial disappointment. They were exhausted from touring the globe. Boy George ended a turbulent (and abusive) relationship with percussionist Jon Moss and had turned to heroin for relief. Producer Arif Mardin was reportedly so exasperated that he eventually relegated the final vocal sessions to the studio engineer. Still, it resulted in their final appearance on the Hot 100.
Another British new romantic export, The Blow Monkeys made a single visit to the Top 15 of the Hot 100. A pop-jazz-soul hybrid which reflected on the stigma associated with HIV and AIDS (a brave topic for the time), it was critically-acclaimed but did not make the year-end 100 for 1986.
Unless you count Tina who renounced her US citizenship to set up roots in Europe, Switzerland's biggest success on the Hot 100 is arguably the band, Double. Their simple yet sophisticated track was praised by critics and reached the US Top 20, but like many of its 80s peers, the band soon disappeared into oblivion.
It was inevitable that the music industry would capitalize on Don Johnson's popularity in the Miami Vice franchise. After all, he was rumoured to have collaborated with The Allman Brothers in the 70s. By the end of the 80s, he would record a duet with then flame, Ms. Streisand. 1986 marked his biggest music success with a Top 20 album, a Top 5 single and action-packed music video ... complete with mullet and parachute pants (sadly, Philip Michael Thomas didn't make an appearance).
While this anthem is perhaps most remembered as the accompanying theme to Chevrolet's massive truck campaign in the 90s, Bob Seger claims that it was inspired by a personal relationship.
And lastly ... while he was known as lead singer for Irish punk-band, The Undertones, Feargel Sharkey found solo success with 'A Good Heart'. Produced by Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, it reached the top of the UK charts.

So far, so good. 2 of my least favorites are gone as expected. Keep them coming. 😁

Shame that THAT is Klymaxx's biggest hit instead of one of their tracks that had so much swag and personality.

Aww...pooo. I lost my first 20, but I can't blame you guys for ranking a song about infidelity very low on your list.

Surprised that Peter Cetera managed to escape the bottom 10. You can thank myself and a few others for keeping that one from landing in the bottom 10. :) I've always had an odd soft spot for that song. Its time is coming soon though...when remains to be seen!

Yet another 80s year that I started to rank but never was able to finish. But it's looking good so far!
Eddie Murphy in the bottom 20? Let's hope not!

before we start, I gotta say, I was young. I mean preteen, so ballads really didn't kick my hyper activeness in full throttle. #100. Friends & Lovers - Gloria Loring & Carl AndersonPerfect ranking on the first reveal. I remember thinking this was for old people. Still do. :kii: #99. Spies Like Us - Paul McCartneyI rember this movie made me laugh so much. The song? Not so much. man Donna Dixxon was every male pre teen's dream girl. #98. I Miss You - KlymaxxThis was mine and my first girlfirend's theme song. Fuck, you guys suck for killing it too early. #97 . Secret Lovers- Atlantic StarrThis was my girlfriend's brother and his girlfriend's theme song. I like this one too. #96. Love Will Conquer All - Lionel RichieThis one was way too sappy for me. #95. There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) - Billy OceanYou guys are tanking ballads, but all the wrong ones. This one was a big top 10 for me. #94. I'll Be Over You - TotoA great AOR rock ballad. #93. Tender Love - Force MDsI admit that this one falls short among these other songs, but not a bottom 10 contender. #92. Who's Johnny - El DeBargeI'm guessing this one is way too fun for the "old at heart" members of pulse? :kii: #91. Love Touch - Rod StewartDidn't think Rod Stewart would show up this early. Who are you people?

Question? So what makes these R&B ballads from Klymaxx, Atlantic Starr, Billy Ocean, and Toto; any less in quality, than, that Whitney Houston; bore-a-thon? FUCK if I know

No major surprises... although some disappointments in this first reveal (2 songs in my top 50) 100. Friends and Lovers (99): First listen... surprised how this stuff made it that far in a year like 1986. Clear bottom 5 for me. 99. Spies like Us (95): Minor hit back home and in my personal chart. It was more of a novelty hit that quickly faded into obscurity, though 98. I Miss You (80): This was a top 5 back home and in my personal chart. I did like the melody especially in the chorus, despite being a bit too saccharine. It hasn't aged that well, I admit, so I'm not too mad at it being this low --still was hoping it would escape bottom . 97. Secret Lovers (94): I wasn't into it back in the day, and it's still a bit too sappy now. 96. Love Will Conquer All (90): I like the instrumentation, but the song has always felt a bit too simple/boring 95. There'll Be Sad Songs (84): Like I Miss You, I don't think it's that bad despite being saccharine. Plus, Billy is a pretty good singer. 94. I'll Be Over You (42): First WTF of this RD, although not unexpected given the (surprising) dislike for Toto and similar groups in Pulse I've always liked this song and I still have it in my playlist. The melody is great from here to chorus, plus Michael McDonald does an amazing job in background vocals. 93. Tender Love (100): Another first listen and another unmemorable song that I can't understand how it made it to the top 100 of the year. Sorry... 92. Who's Johnny (69): A personal chart-topper and a hit back home. Still fun to hear and bop to. 91. Love Touch (45): Huh? A top 5 back home and in my personal chart, which hasn't lost much of its appeal with time IMO. I was a big fan of Rod and Elton in the 1980s... sad to see another top 50 leave this soon...

Pretty good start I suppose. My highest loss was, what, #70? Which for me is still in the range of songs I don't care about

Question? So what makes these R&B ballads from Klymaxx, Atlantic Starr, Billy Ocean, and Toto; any less in quality, than, that Whitney Houston; bore-a-thon? f**k if I know Whitney has the more enduring legacy, is the simplest answer.
