I’m pretty surprised breaking the habit managed to make the top 2 after numb was gone relatively early. Numb did better than BTH on both the Pulse singles rankdown and Pulse Top Tens, and was a lot more popular on the radio charts as well

BTH did win the Meteora rankdown, though.

Difference being, 'Numb' was a pop hit and the demographic in those other rankdowns might not necessarily have as much crossover with this game.

So, your top 2... "Breaking the Habit" vs. "Take Me Out". On one hand, an Alt staple gets their highest (and first top 5) finish yet. On the other hand, we have the massive breakthrough single for a band that have scored several (not-as-big) charters since. Who will win? Some stats: -Nobody has a perfect top 2. The closest thing to such is two users - YotamTS and @carseatlegrest - that are down to their #1 and #3. -The margin between #1 and #2 is 63 points. -One of these has the 6th lowest SD. The other would take its place as the 6th lowest...if it wasn't for one particular outlier. -One has four #1s, the other has three #1s. -Both have the same number of top 5 ranks - 11. -One has 17 top 10s, while the other has 19. -One of these spent 20 lists at the top, while the other spent 8. -One of these never left the top two.

I mean, "Breaking the Habit" was a pop hit, too. shrugI don't know their CHR history, was it? #15 on pop, top 20 on the Hot 100, even made the 2004 year-end chart. Not quite as big as "Numb", but big.

I mean, "Breaking the Habit" was a pop hit, too. shrugI don't know their CHR history, was it? Yeah and if I recall correctly it was almost as big. The top 4 here were all CHR top 40s, as was Ocean Avenue, making half the top 10 pop hits.

Rooting for “Breaking The Habit”. “Take Me Out” has burned on me over the years and is borderline annoying at this point.

Ahh, okay. I was only ever aware of 'In The End', 'Numb' and 'One Step Closer' from around that time. I didn't think 'Breaking The Habit' got that much pop attention since I don't think it did much here.

10. Run - Another great one from Snow Patrol's Final Straw, more understated than their later ballads, but in a good way. Pleasantly surprised this is top 10.
9. Maps - This is a song for the ages. Was hoping it could make top 5 but I'll take it.
8. Ocean Avenue - Okay, my lowest-ranked top 10 is gone. I don't think this is in the same league as most of the other top 10 songs, but it's still a very solid melodic pop-punk tune. The violin is a nice touch too.
7. Reptilia - Classic Strokes. One off from a perfect ranking.
6. Time Is Running Out - One of Muse's best, don't know how "Madness" and "Dead Inside" made top 5 but this didn't. Oh well.
5. Megalomaniac - Cool rocker from Incubus with some good pointed social commentary. A bit surprised it made it this far as I thought it might have more backlash. I wonder if Incubus could pull a #1 in the next few rankdowns.
4. Float On - Was hoping my #1 could reach the top, but not surprised a few tankers ruined it. This song was a huge breath of fresh air on Alternative back then, and stands the test of time as a classic now.
3. Somebody Told Me - I'm kind of glad this isn't #1, still a good song and worthy top 10, but not one of my top favorites here and seemed like too obvious of a #1 choice.
Go Franz Ferdinand!!

singingrulebritannia, Daryl the Beryl, Pipa - my condolences. This will be particularly painful for singingrulebritannia, who requested to be "[taken] out of [his] misery" in his PM title if "Take Me Out" didn't win. But I assume @doinktheclown will be glad to know his vote was decisive in choosing the winner. (now, I'm not sure how a #98 is justifiable for "Take Me Out" - a song that I had always thought was unhateable until this rankdown - unless you intentionally felt like stopping it from winning...) And even if "Take Me Out" was higher on my list (by one spot), I'm pretty glad to see that this didn't turn out as predictable as I expected, besides "Breaking the Habit" also being an excellent song. I'm pretty sure most of us thought "Take Me Out" was taking the win here, and I certainly thought so before this rankdown even opened. 1

Although I'm upset that my #1 did not win, this was a fun RD to follow. Made several great discoveries, and it's nice to see some songs surprising with their performances. Thanks for hosting, peace!

thanks for hosting the rankdown peacebone, it was a bumpy ride at times but we made it!
Not too stoked with the winner but most of my top ranks made it high enough for me to be happy. On to 2003!

At least the winner wasn't decided by a certain poster...and I'm fine with the upset. I was rooting for "Float On" to win out of the songs that actually had a chance to win, anyway.
As always, a superb job hosting, peacebone.

Obviously happy with the winner - Which really came like a surprise as each reveal went by - but happy with the overall top 5 too - all 5 excellent songs.
Thanks for hosting, peacebone! I'm enjoying participating these rankdowns as part of my semi-comeback on Pulse.

Naturally my lowest ranked song that made the top 10 wins. Haven't been that big a fan of BTH since I was a kid, but at least it's not a bad winner. Thanks peacebone for hosting.
