Too many artists have launched vertical-oriented videos lately. What are your thoughts about this new trend?

Too many? I've always liked the idea of multiple videos for one song. Especially when you're not crazy about the official- like Havana. And it makes sense having them since so many people view videos on their phones. I'm excited to see where this trend will go and hopefully there will be bigger budgets

Meh. They're great for promotional purposes I guess.

I'm already annoyed when people record videos in vertical. Turn your damn phone!

It embarrasses me when people film vertically on their phones - yet most people do it because most watch them back on their phones and/or donβt know better. It makes sense if theyβll never get uploaded anywhere where a computer screen is used.
Iβd say vertical music videos are just a response to the people. In some ways, theyβre almost overdue.

So far the few we've got are pretty useless and pale in comparison to the official MV. I liked Havana's vertical video though.
Good for Spotify promo but nothing else.

One of the silliest things the music industry has ever done.

I don't know why artists are bothering to do this when they can't even make a decent regular music video anymore.

You just canβt include as much information in a shot with a veritcal video, so Iβm inclined to think theyβre inferior, but itβs harder to view traditional videos on mobile devices (which is where most digital media is being consumed). Directors are likely concerned that viewers are missing out on detail, and viewers are becoming less interested in videos they may or may not be able to view properly.
VVs are a good compromise; theyβre a way for these directors to adapt and reinvigorate interest in music videos, especially with how big the mobile market is becoming, while still taking advantage of the frame. When you look at how many people are ditching laptops and PCs in favor of smart devices, it starts to make sense.
Generations who grew up on MTVβs golden years are going to think this is total crap, but it seems to be an appropriate and necessary move for the industry to make.

What Sercies is saying is the right thing, however I feel like vertical music videos need to have more creativity if they have to have the reputation of traditional music videos. So far the Sit Next To Me video is the only vertical music video I'm fond of.

They're a strong promotional tool and something we're bound to see more of, but the quality of the vast majority of them are just terrible. The creativity is extremely lacking, but if we got more creative vertical videos, they'd be even stronger of a promotional tool and could potentially replace the standard music video or at least the lyric video.
To be honest, vertical lyric videos would be amazing to have alongside full fledged music videos.

Stastically, they are useless. They get so low views and they don't help the official MV. IMO, they are not bad but not good.

Most vertical vids just have shitty (or no) direction. If someone would work with the skinny frame to create a signature style (a la Hype Williams with his fisheye or the two simultaneous shots in one screen techniques) people would be into it. I agree with @touch and Au$tin that this is generally where things are headed and that's not a bad thing per se, but there's just no innovation going on rn. Most VVs can't even be bothered to have decent camerawork let alone creativity.
