I think the Madonna speech was the only big idea they could implement into the show in very last minute considering Aretha passed away 5 days ago. Wonder if MTV asked her to do that or did she volunteered. It's kinda wrong that she made it all about herself, but then again, she many times does that. I think it was nice to hear a story related to Aretha even though it was by Madonna about Madonna basically. That was whole lot of more interesting than a basic rendition of A Natural Woman (we've seen those on tv already) and Aretha was more than a voice, she was an inspiration (to Madonna as well).
Now people talking about how she looks (Madonna I mean) and what she wears... give me a break, she's adopting yet again new style from Portugal and Morocco, making (hopefully) brilliant album with those influences and yet again showing the world how things are done when you follow your own path.

They could have done something other than Madonna talking about herself. I think it would have been better for Jimmy Fallon to do his recollection of Aretha and how she was with him(calling him to tell him he was doing a great job) than Madonna. The things Whitney and Aretha have said over the years about Madonna or artists, that was a horrible choice. She not only made it about her verbally but visually as well. She could have been a bit more demure when doing a tribute to a legend. I’m not an Aretha fan, I like a bunch of songs, but I do see her as a legend. I was asking if MTV was going to even acknowledge her passing. They were playing her songs in some breaks(I didn’t submit myself to the whole show) but this was awful. I switched back when Jimmy Fallon was coming out and I thought that’s when they were going do the Aretha tribute bc she was playing in from the commercials break.

Would you all have preferred Dionne Warwick or Cissy Houston delivering a completely inappropriate tribute instead?

The show was so meh. But it wasn't putrid like some years I guess. The biggest issue was that it deflated as it went along and the lack of great performers didn't help. I'm almost ashamed by how hot I'm finding Shawn Mendes these days. His performance was nice, but how old is that song now? Let's move on please. Ariana sounded great, but got swallowed by the presentation. She's just not a dynamic performer and that's okay, not everyone needs to be. Brendan was looking cute and I was loving the high notes at the end, but I've just never been a fan musically. Everything he does is so damn fussy and overdone. Travis Scott was giving me energy up there and his control was fantastic, that's more than I can say for Nicki, who got winded by doing a two step. Her performance was good though, but she needs to get into performance shape. Logic, eh. I'm over his shtick. I've never heard of this Jessie person, but if she dials down those ridiculous vocal tics, she could be a winner. Maluma was a misfire, it was clear he was trying to create his breakout crossover moment, but it was so boring. He is gorgeous though, I'll give him that much. And Post Malone continues to be mediocre, not even Aerosmith can save him. What a dud of a closer. Jennifer Lopez's set was nice, I still don't think she deserved the award, but whatevs. And her speech! Way too long.
Madonna's tribute was such a misfire. But let's be honest, MTV even trying to pay tribute to Aretha Franklin is a f**king joke. In their almost 40 year history, they've probably played what? Like three Aretha videos? And two of those featured white artists. I get what Madonna was going for, but she needed to boil that point way the f**k down. The reaction is of course way over the top, but people have been wanting Madonna to shrivel up and die for decades now. And the fact that she won't just exacerbates the reaction to anything she does.
I was living every time someone mentioned Travis being #1 though. THE PETTINESS OF IT ALL. Can't wait to see the ratings for this, why the hell was this on a Monday night again? Horrible decision.

Absolutely dreadful "tribute" speech. Madonna is such a narcissist. She HAS to make it all about herself. She did that when speaking about Whitney, she did that when speaking about MJ, she did that when speaking about Aretha. Always in poor taste. A tribute from Madonna about Madonna basically. And she looked a mess to boot.

the award is truly mess and winning this become nothing. no wonder it had lowest rating among music awards last year. the winnier choices are all... lol basically who is here? you get it. and looks like vote is not even real thing. I knew something was off. lol they just open the vote, but decide winners themselves with no dignity.

This is nothing new, but man was it on full display last night .... the RIGGED factor.
Artists know what they're going to win, and that's why they appear. Many don't appear unless they're going to win. It was so blatantly obvious last night. Some of the category winners were like really - but it made perfect sense based on who was there and who wasn't. Jennifer Lopez's collab award for Dinero was a good example. No shade to her, but come on now. Her trying to act surprised failed. They don't want to give awards to people who aren't there - period. There was ONE exception, for This Is America, and I was actually surprised they didn't just give that award to Logic.
The Cardi B Taco Bell commercial after winning best new artist award? Twitter voting results and hashtag trends were available for anyone to see and Cardi was clearly not winning. Not saying she didn't deserve it, but they gave it to her regardless of the votes.
All in all it was a mess, but there were some good performances and the way they utilized the green-screen effects on the walls and ceiling was really cool.

Props to all the special effects people and everyone behind the scenes last night, the stage was fantastic and designed well and the effects and lights were unbelievable. Definitely the best VMA stage in a while.

Dont worry they will ask her to speak at Mariah's tribute also. Nah that'll be Ariana. Madge'll speak at Janet's and spend ten minutes drawing comparisons between the Sex book and boobgate. Monroe would never let her mother be disrespected like that.

From the moment it was announced that Madonna was going to be doing the Aretha Franklin tribute, I knew it was going to be a mess. Actually, that’s a lie, as soon as I heard that they were doing an Aretha Franklin tribute at the VMAs I knew it was going to be a mess. When people think of Aretha Franklin they don’t go “music videos.” First, Madonna came on stage in that outfit and even the most anti-SJW people on Earth were able to say “that doesn’t look right.” Then she proceeded to make the entire speech about herself saying at one point that without Aretha there would be no Madonna, to which I say, I think people would be cool right now if that were the case. Look, I get it Madonna is, without a doubt, one of the most important figures in music and has a legacy deserving of its own tribute someday, but can you imagine if after her death, Ariana Grande comes on stage and goes “if there wasn’t for ‘Like a Virgin’ there wouldn’t be ‘God is a Woman'” This is also not the first time Madonna has hijacked a tribute to a fallen star, as she did this with both Prince in 2016 at the Billboard Awards, Bowie in a concert in Texas, and Michael Jackson in 2019. All have ranged from okay to cringe because even when Madonna is trying to be thoughtful, it really does come off as all about her. “None of this would’ve happened, could’ve happened without our lady of soul. She led me to where I am today, and I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, in this room tonight, and I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us, R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Long live the queen!” she said in probably the most on-topic thing during the “speech.” Besides, even if the VMAs in their tired attempt to stay relevant wanted to do a tribute to Franklin, they should have gotten a black performer to do that. Aretha Franklin’s music may have inspired people across all walks of life, but her role as a black woman in music is just as important and that should not have been forgotten. Use your budget to get Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott or, if you really, really wanted a white performer Adele. Nope, they just dusted off Madonna and her outfit and called it a tribute. But again, this is the VMAs. Let us hope that the Grammys can at least get one thing right this year and give the Queen of Soul the tribute she deserves. www.themarysue.com/madonna-aretha-franklin-tribute/MTV VMAs: Madonna's 'self-indulgent' Aretha tribute www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-45255901

http://instagram.com/p/Bmv1ypbgp9y Classy response IMO . Nope, they just dusted off Madonna and her outfit and called it a tribute. I don't get this obsession about how Madonna dresses, it's been going on through the decades and still goes on and on and on

^Indeed. People will always come for her (and other divas) any chance they get. Not that she (and others) don't give people reasons to come for her (them), to be very clear she/they do, but there will always be reasons if one wants there to be.
Had she just said exactly that in her speech, I would have been totally cool with it. I know it still doesn't solve the "they picked her instead of (someone else)" problem, but on her behalf, she wouldn't have been dragged as much.

When the time comes for Madonna there would be no point of giving her a tribute cause she herself has done it...again and again and again.

The rigged thing is true though. Rita was there because she probably knew she was getting the Dance video VMA... which sure, nice Avicii tribute but whatever...
Dua Lipa didn't bother, the Carters didn't bother, etc...
