The rigged thing is true though. Rita was there because she probably knew she was getting the Dance video VMA... which sure, nice Avicii tribute but whatever... Dua Lipa didn't bother, the Carters didn't bother, etc... The BRITS are the same. You can tell who will win very often if some of the nominees don't even show. I think the Grammys are the only show that don't have a backdoor policy of letting winners know, at least as often.

DJ Khaled is to VMAs what Dave Grohl is to Grammys: always somehow popping up in unusual places when nobody wants him there.

Why are these media/twitter posts only mentioning the Prince tribute mess up. She also made the MJ speech about her as well.

MTV’s annual Video Music Awards were down yet again year-to-year last night, scoring a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 and an all-time low 2.25 million viewers, three-tenths lower than the 1.4 they had scored last year, when they had aired on a Sunday night. Both the network’s pre-show and VH1’s simulcast of the awards show grabbed only 0.5s as well.

People read too much into everything. It was a harmless joke. Was it necessary? I mean, not really. Is it something that is so horrible and terrible? Not even close.

The fifth harmony joke was still in poor taste and just unnecessary.

Comedians are known for pushing buttons though. I wouldn't expect anything else from Tiffany. I highly doubt she truly means anything negative towards other females. But comedians just like to stir the pot. And MTV probably even had it scripted to say that for "ratings" and discussions all over the net the next day -- which has happened. There is nothing new from (many) comedians taking cheap shots at celebrities - especially at award shows. We've seen this time and time again.

The fifth harmony joke was still in poor taste and just unnecessary. Yeah, it was too obviously scripted for the sake of clickbait. And it ended up backfiring when Nicki of all people caped for the group and for Normani individually. Mani ended up trending for hours without even being there and I have a feeling that was not the intended outcome of that little joke. On a side note, Normani booking an Atlanta flight so that she'd be in the air and not within ten thousand miles of a tv during the VMAs is lowkey the best paying dust move ever.

I mean I get it, a comedian's job is to push buttons and stuff but the 5H girls are all young individuals who started from nothing, now are back to nothing and try to find their place in an industry where competition is at an all-time high. It is not okay to bring down young people and their dreams, especially when they're completely harmless like the 5H girls. It'd be a legit joke if it was made about Destiny's Child or any other group of the past whose members are all old, accomplished and rich enough to not give a s**t about it. Plus, Tiffany is high key annoying and unnecessarily extra which is something that also contributed to the 'outrage' over her comments.

Literally 5H shaded Camila last year, and that was during their performance, this was just a quick dig by Tiffany Haddish. I see no issue with this.
Though I agree that Tiffany is very extra, I really don't see the appeal of her, I don't find her very funny, she's very loud and obnoxious and seems to rely on stereotypes for humor. Is her entire persona being ratchet?

What amplified it was having two kinda similar comedians going back and forth which made it seem redundant or extra. Tiffany is fantastic.

I like Kevin Hart too but last night was a miss, I'm hoping this is the same for Tiffany. Her SNL stuff wasn't very funny, I'll check some of her stand up which might be better cuz stand up is always better than TV.

Actually this is precisely why the bit was out of place. However you might feel about it, 5H threw their shade themselves; they owned it. Camila could have responded in kind with her own performance, or not responded at all and let her night (and 5H's currently defunct status) speak for itself; sometimes the best shade is simply success. Far as I can tell she opted to do the latter, but MTV having two comedians script in the shade didn't sit as well bc it wasn't Camila herself throwing it. It made MTV look unnecessarily messy and desperate (becoming an active role player in the drama shouldn't ever be any award show's main goal) and played Camila weak at the same time by making it look as if she has to rely on other people to handle her beef for her. And like I said, didn't even work out as intended bc it just led to free positive press for Normani that (imo) took away some wind out of what otherwise should have been Camila's big night...if that is karma I think Camila needs to ask for a refund lol. Frankly if I were a singer these days I am not even sure i would care to book the VMAs because the show runners are so obviously just in it for the drama and trying to goad reactions out of everyone instead of letting things happen naturally. I'd be too agitated to function in that kind of environment. It must be a Viacom thing bc I think BET is the only other award show that purposely does that.

Maybe BBMAs since their relaunch? (It's easy to increase when you start from zero) Even Oscars have had a big downward turn in viewers iirc

The BET Awards and VMAs were such a mess this year. And not in a good way.
I could comment more, but other than being tradition and money based, why IS there a VMA show anymore? MTV doesn’t play videos anymore. I barely watch MTV, but is anything musically inclined anymore? I just read earlier in the thread the Haley girl had more votes than Cardi? Is that a fact? If so, sad.
Dinero- shock. I think it was a shock to all of them to be honest. MTV day want have a voting committee or whatever like the Grammys, Emmys, Oscars where they have to introduce people who tabulated the votes and kept them secure.

To be fair the 5H joke has been said here 254 times. These people need to learn to take a joke (and no lies were said... Normani is doing great with her song but Camila got a huge head start by ditching the group instead of doing that third album that mostly flopped).
I really liked 5H and I still laughed at that.

To be fair the 5H joke has been said here 254 times. That's the point. If it's been said that many times and everybody knows it's true, it's not really a joke anymore. If Camilla is having a huge year and the other girls are struggling it's not so funny to poke fun at the weak side. When the girls threw shade at Camilla last year, Camilla was not "weak" as she was getting a lot of attention and full label support.

American Ninja Warrior is a billion times more entertaining than the VMA's, wish I would of spent my 2.5 hours watching that than wasting it on a boring ass award show.

Didn’t even know this show happened until today. If MTV insists on keeping the VMAs alive, they really need to advertise/make this show accessible to the streaming audience. There is no incentive for people to keep an overpriced cable package when you can watch whatever you want on Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc. I’d wager most kids who are the target demographic of this ceremony aren’t consuming their pop culture through cable television.
