I Want Your Sex George MichaelTotal Points: 1951 Billboard Hot 100: 2 (1)Billboard Top 100 of 1987: 24 From: Beverly Hills Cop II SoundtrackInitially released from the soundtrack to the movie Beverly Hills Cop II (and later included on his album Faith) this controversial single was massively popular in the summer of 1987, reaching the Top 5 in nearly 20 countries. In the US, it peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending August 8 th at No. 2 behind the yet to be seen on this rankdown "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." Losing a couple No. 2's with this leaving... Wow, I never expected this to make it in the top 5. He has much better songs... MMMMM HAVE! SEX! WITH! MEYYY! HOOH! C-C-C-C-COME ON!

Other songs that were hits back home and in my personal chart in 1987, including some that were part of a French invasion:
- What You Get Is What You See (Tina Turner): Tina had a big hit with Typical Male in 1986. The next time she was played was with this song, that became a top 5 back home, and a personal chart-topper. I liked the overall fresh vibe, country pop sound, and attitude.
- The Bottom Line (Big Audio Dynamite): They got a medium hit with E=MC^2 in 1986. Then in 1987 this also became a midsize hit back home, and reached the top of my personal chart. I really liked the beat and unique production of this song.
And I don't know exactly how or why, but 1987 was the year of the French Fever back home, especially with one act. I mean, Bijou's Rock A La Radio and Indchine's L'Aventurier had had some rotation in 1986, but all of a sudden in 1987 Indochine's Au Zenith became a HUGE album and with it we had several French hits on the radio:
- 3ème Sexe (Indochine): This is the song that changed the game and started the Indochine fever in 1987. It was a HUGE nationwide hit that quickly reached the top of the national charts and remained popular for several weeks. It was the live version from the Au Zenith album that became popular, and some weekend shows would play 3ème Sexe / L'Aventurier back to back, as this was the order in the AZ album. The original studio version was also played in some cases, but the version that became a classic and the biggest song in radios since Like A Virgin was the live version. Personally, this was my song of the year and one of the top 5 songs of the decade. Loved the intro and outro, the dark, moody vibe combined with the high energy. Plus the sound, production, vocals, melody, and of course lyrics!
- Canary Bay (Indochine): This was the next single promoted to radios and another BIG hit and in the yearend top 5 back home. This had a little more happy pop flaiso its success made even more sense. The claps, sax, percussion (especially during the bridge, which had some Latin flavor), guitar (with that oriental sound also present in L'Adventuier) made me like it quite a lot as well. The live version was the most popular, but the studio version also had some rotation. This was another personal chart-topper.
- A L'Assaut (Indochine): Another BIG single, this time even more popular than CB although less than 3S. Another multi-week national and personal chart-topper. It was the song of the year in a couple of radio stations. I LOVED the sound, melody, energy including that percussion sound before the verses and in the bridge.
- Kao Bang (Indochine): This had the most Latin flavor of all the singles and even though it wasn't as successful as the previous singles, it was still a hit -and a personal top 3. Loved the intro in the live version, the percussion and guitar sounds and the whole vibe of the song.
- Les Tzars (Indochine): I became an Indochina SUPER FAN in 1987. Au Zenith was the third cassette I bought, after a compilation one and after True Blue. And I used up that cassette A LOT. I created my own megamix with 5 songs off it and all. I was super excited when I heard the 7,000 Danses album was coming. And the lead single was SO GOOD! One of my favorites from them. Loved all the different sounds and the dark but catchy mood. Another hit back home, and a personal chart-topper.
An interesting part of history is that "Indochina" (as they were called back home) managed to come to Peru and perform for 2 nights in April 1988. This was already in the middle of a big economic, political, and social crisis back home. A time where the Shining Path started to make its strides closer to the capital and where inflation and economic scarcity were on the rise. On top of this, Peruvian Congressmen actually tried to block their visit because they had 'demoniac' songs that promoted corrupted values for our people --in reference to the lyrics that talked about third sex, LGBT, queerism, OMG!!! To be honest, Peruvians do not speak French lol so people would barely understand the lyrics of that song, but they LOVED what they heard. Plus, in 1988 they already had a dozen of #1 hits in just a couple of years. They were really BIG. Even bigger than the Argentinean group Soda Stereo was in 1986 or than Madonna was in 1985.
- L'Hymne à l'amour (Cyclope): A simple but effective punk cover of this classic French song became another big French hit back home this year. Actually, Cyclope performed in our annual Summer festival (Feria del Hogar) in July 1987, following the success of this song and a couple others (J'ai Compris Ma Douleur and Matrimoniales) which played a key role for
- C'est Comme Ça (Les Rita Mitsouko): This was their only hit, a top 5 back home and a personal chart-topper as well. Love the music, energy, dark vibe, and interesting vocals (including background vocals in the last minute).

Juanca I didn't know you were such a huge Indochine fan. They were pretty much the French version of the Cure. One of my favorite New Wave bands of the 80's. I have tons of their stuff on 45' and they have a new record out.

Doc Indie Party Rock, regarding The Bangles, you're talking about their 1988 cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Hazy Shade of Winter, which actually starts with a breezy intro with barely any instrumentation and then cuts to the guitar riff and drums in a great rock version. And YES, Indochine have made the top 5 of my personal chart at least 20 times. From 1987 to 1992 they were in my chart almost every week. So many favorite songs from them, including La Chevauchee des Champs de Blue, Leila, Un Jour Da Notre Vie, A L'Est de Java, in addition to the Au Zenith songs I mentioned. Back home their last hit was Savour le Rouge. I had a blank of about 10 years without knowing much of them, but I came back with their last era. Loved the song and video to College Boy, for example. Thanks for sharing that new clip!! I'm always checking out whether they'd ever come to the US. After seeing Erasure live a couple of months ago, Indochine is the only still-performing band I haven't seen yet that I MUST see. I hope work can take me to Europe during their tour... or that they come to the US at some point soon. I LOVE THEM!!! ------------------------------ Btw, I wanted to see how my vote could've affected some songs in this RD... interestingly, I could've affected some positions: With Or Without You and U Got The Look would've switched positions, Whitney would've made top 5, Little Lies had been at #7, but George Michael at #8. Kim Wilde would've made it to the top 10 (Yay!) taking Bad's spot. Outside the Top 10, I would've kicked Wanted Dead Or Alive out of the top 20 and made The Way It Is enter the top 20. Big Love and Change of Heart would've been in the top 30, but Heart and Soul would've been at #32 and Tonight X3 would've slipped to #36. Further down, The Time of My Life, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, La Bamba, Shakedown, Touch Me, and Lady In Red would've been 4-5 spots higher. Interesting findings :) (Thanks, Unhinged!)
