sabre14 out here campaigning extra hard for that Best Straight Poster award. But ftr, you are obviously free to like or dislike whatever you want and if you dont connect with the song that's fine and totally understandable. I was literally just making a joke because someone pointed out that the song made the Top 20 here without a single female helping boost it, but doubling down on the 'I'm straight and this song is too girly' approach was a little offensive too ngl. At the end of it all, there was no ill intent from bboat11 or myself.

Not to pile on at all ( sabre14 is a great guy), but as a straight guy as well, I've always really liked "This One's For The Girls". I think it's themes are universal enough that you can either think of someone who you identify with the lyrics, or it's close enough to yourself that it fits as well (especially being 25 and trying to establish yourself and thinking that things aren't working out they way they're supposed to). Plus, for me, Martina's voice can elevate most lyrics.

I love "19 Somethin'" and am pleasantly surprised to see it in the Top 10, so it bowing out at #10 is okay with me. It is a great song that may have been ruined a little by overplay but I still love the song.

Oh good. These two are good songs but so overplayed. Glad to see both of them out of contention for #1.

Sad to see Sara Evans and Billy Currington miss the Top 5 here. I'd be happy with any of the remaining 5 winning though, except for "Speed." It's one of MG's best imo, but it's not as good as the other 4.

disappointed to see the overrated "Red Dirt Road" in the Top 5 but I love the other 4 so hope one of them wins, would prefer "Speed" or "Brokenheartsville" win because those are the two best left.

"Brokenheartsville" is such an incredible song. "Here's to the past; they can kiss my glass. I hope she's happy with him." That melody is so understatedly catchy and iconic! I also love how Joe shows off a lower side of his range towards the end of the chorus. This is one of those songs that would be a damn good song regardless of who sang it, and Joe was lucky enough to be the guy that got to claim it. Wonderful addition to the top 3! Would have liked to have seen it make the top 2, but both remaining songs are so iconic it's hard to complain too much.

Now I guess I'm team Dixie Chicks, although "Red Dirt Road" is incredible too. "Travelin' Soldier" has worn on me a bit through the years, and "Red Dirt Road" is one of those songs that is so overplayed I'm just never as excited about it as I originally was back in 2003, but there is no doubt that both are worthy contenders to be at the top of this rankdown!

#1. Dixie Chicks - "Travelin' Soldier"

Released the week of Christmas to country radio, it would reach #1 in March of 2003. It would be their final top 10 single at country radio. The album also produced two other top 5 singles, "Long Time Gone" and "Landslide" (both peaked at #2).
The song was written and originally recorded by Texas country artist Bruce Robison in 1996 and then again in rewritten form in 1999. Former country artist and past member of Garth Brooks' road band, Ty England recorded the song in 1999. The Dixie Chicks would then record the song for their 2002 Home album. The song would be recorded a few other times, by Natalie Maines, Bruce Robison and his wife Kelly Willis on KGSR's Broadcasts Vol. 13 album and in 2016 by Aaron Lewis off his album Sinner, where he let his daughter Zoe sing lead on the song.

Oh wow, that wasn't even close!! I was expecting "Travelin' Soldier" to be able to beat "Red Dirt Road", but I never suspected it would massacre its way to an over 100-point lead! Anyway, both songs are awesome. Back in 2003 "Travelin' Soldier" was one of my favorite songs of all time. War and military songs are typically in grave danger of being jingoistic messes, but this song completely avoids all the traps. The story here is so emotional, raw, and feels just so plain real. Listening to the song is a roller coaster ride of happiness, anxiety, uncertainty, and of course sadness, all handled so expertly and deftly that the final product leaves you feeling pride for our troops paired with sympathy for the ones who are lost in ways that most patriotic songs fail to do. I can't listen to this on repeat anymore the way I did when I was younger, but I have no problems seeing this one win Thanks for hosting sabre14! 2003 is one of my favorite years ever, so I am so glad that somebody was finally willing to host it :)

Easily the worst end result to a year-end country rankdown thus far, but I'm not surprised. Songs about war/soldiers have never resonated with me and I'm not fond of the melody of this one either. That coupling with me not being the biggest Dixie Chicks fan (I like them, but I find them overrated for the most part) made for a much lower ranking for me. Anything in the top 20 would have been a better winner, imo.

Can I just ask? zaclord ๐ why do war songs as a whole not resonate with you and aren't a fan of them. If you don't want to answer that is perfectly understandable.
