Also, I've gotta say, I am a bit surprised and disappointed by all the talk of not really liking this album!! One Step At A Time, though, is not up for debate!! I completely agree with this and was also a bit caught by surprise with the chatter regarding the quality of this album. It was yet another strong contender for Album of the Year at the CMA's in 1998, but that award went to Tim's Everywhere which was also much deserved.

Well, that’s just great. Just what I needed. The icing on the cake; You’re leavin’. But I give up, Throw up my hands. There’s nothing I can say or do. I’ve done all that I can.

Anyway, bowing out next is "That's The Breaks". I am sure that nobody other than gonecountry thought this would be the highest album track, lol. But still, it made for a good hint to get people sweating! "That's The Breaks" is just such a weird expression, and as far as idioms go it is not exactly widely known, so it was kind of a bold choice to try to write a song around it... The result might be boring for some, but just like "Maria" it is not exactly BAD. In fact, I actually enjoyed it a lot more when revisiting this album than I remembered enjoying it previously!

Not surprised to see this out in the bottom 2, but damn it's such a cleverly written song. From the opening line Well that's just great, Just what I needed to The way the cookie crumbles in the chorus. I've also always loved the way George sings And what's been comin' round, Ain't been goin' my way

The loss of gonecountry's #2 with our last reveal was merely a harbinger for the fuckery that was about to come. With our next reveal, the fuckery arrives in full force. Somebody else will lose their #2, in addition to two #3s.

I think we can hold on, make it together If we remember when, And get back to love The way that it was back then. When we were hopeless romantics, needing each other, Willin’ to take a chance. We strolled and we talked down the old river walk To the heart of where it began.

"Remember The Alamo" has always been a standout for me on this album. I definitely feel like I underranked it, looking back now... Lol. George's vocals paired with the epic harmonies in the chorus are truly awesome I could see this failing to get traction compared to some of the amazing album tracks that are left, but imo it definitely deserved to place higher than at least one of the singles, and one of the remaining album tracks...

I didn't dislike anything though

Girl, I can’t hold you back, Not one day longer. If my love ain’t strong enough To keep you home, Just start the fire To burn the bridges. And maybe some night, we’ll meet in the magic light Down on neon row.

"Neon Row" is one of my favorite album tracks of George's entire career. The whole sound is just so dark, but those lyrics are SPICY (seriously, what an incredible kiss-off the lyric I quoted above is, lol), and this is without a doubt one of George's very best vocal performances. Everyone's always complaining about what a limited vocalist he is compared to other famous country men, and I'm like WELL LOOK AT THIS SONG!!!! Those constant F#5s he belts so smoothly and powerfully in the chorus are proof that he can hold his own with the best of them Not to mention it is just a very interesting song thematically. A woman destroying her marriage because she can't stop going out on the town and prostituting herself?! Talk about turning the "cheating man" trope on its head!!

I was just going to guess that the title track would be the song to miss the top 5, but alas it somehow manages to make it in (which I'm baffled by considering Pulse's standards). "You Haven't Left Me Yet" for sure should've been the song to make it into the top 5 over the title track and I'm disappointed that wasn't the outcome here. This is yet another great vocal delivery from George and a song that I've always loved.

I think it's a pretty established fact among George's fanbase that "You Haven't Left Me Yet" is one of the biggest missed hits on this album. Like tim mentioned at the beginning of the rankdown, it was apparently almost released as a 4th single, but then they decided to just move on instead, which I think is too bad because this sounds like another #1 for him, whereas "Meanwhile" (his next lead single) ended up not being one... Lol. Plus Blue Clear Sky and Carrying Your Love With Me both got 4 singles, so I thought it was pretty weird that this equally-strong and successful album didn't get that opportunity considering how on-fire his career was at this time (and the fact that 2 of the 3 hits are pretty campy, lol) This song is just SO catchy! Everything you could ever want in a George Strait song. It may only be the 3rd best album track here, but I would not be shocked to see it be a top 10 contender when his '90s album tracks rankdown happens!!

Even though I knew "Neon Row" would have it's share of people that loved it, I thought that support would be outdone by those that put this somewhere in the bottom 2 and it looks like my thinking was right. I had to shuffle this song around a couple of times in my own list but that just has more to do with the strength of the album overall.
Anyways, here's my predictions for the top 5:
5. One Step at a Time (this has overstayed its welcome as it is) 4. We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This 3. Why Not Now 2. I Just Want to Dance With You 1. True
I can still envision a scenario where "Why Not Now" sneaks into the top 2, but I'm giving the edge to single bias.

Have no idea why the album titled song is still in but otherwise happy with the top five! 🙂 Why Not Now sounded like a missed single opportunity that could've become a classic George. Also I'm fully expecting We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This soon, I'm just glad it even made the top 5. 😭😂

Lol. Plus Blue Clear Sky and Carrying Your Love With Me both got 4 singles, so I thought it was pretty weird that this equally-strong and successful album didn't get that opportunity I think they decided to move onto the next era because George was gearing up for the second leg of his Country Music Festival Tour which had him touring stadiums across North America. "Meanwhile" was released in January, 1999, and the album ANTS followed the first week of March. I looked back and the first date on the tour was March 6th in Phoenix, Arizona, so it probably just made more sense to the label and George to move on to the next album (at this time George recorded his albums during the week of the CMA Awards which would mean that ANTS was done in September, 1998). I did happen to catch a show on both the 1998 and 1999 festival tour. The one in 1998 my mom and I took a road trip to Denver, Colorado where Tim McGraw helped headline the stadium tour along with John Michael Montgomery, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack, Lila McCann and Asleep at the Wheel. The second show as in Ames, Iowa, with Tim McGraw joining the tour again along Dixie Chicks, Kenny Chesney, Jo Dee Messina, Mark Wills, and of course Asleep at the Wheel. I never was a fan of these shows as it made for an all day event and by the time George took the stage I was always quite exhausted.

She’ll walk away one step at a time. It’ll take you by surprise; You’ll think it happened overnight. It’ll be too late when you realize angels don’t fly. They just walk away one step at a time.
