I very much adore the main title sequence of “Heartland” and opening track to the movie Pure Country, but as a whole there isn’t much replay value in this for me. Given that, I never thought this really stood a chance at anything but last place in the rankdown.

In what is probably absolutely NO surprise whatsoever, the weird version of "Heartland" that plays during the movie's opening credits bows out first. This song features George's son Bubba as a child, which is undoubtedly the reason why it is no comparison to the rest of the album. Bubba's child voice was pretty rough in places. He was also really nervous (as we all would be!!!), so George was trying to loosen him up in the studio by being silly. That is why you kinda hear him chuckle in places. Honestly, I LOVE the part where George comes in. His vocals are straight fire! Maybe his voice just sounds better in comparison to his inexperienced nervous son 😂 But I love that part, and it was enough to make this song escape last place for me. I probably enjoy Bubba's parts more than most people too. Seven people got a perfect rank for last place. I'm surprised it wasn't more, tbh. Of course, ClevelandRox starts off with a top 2 loss. There always has to be one 😂

Sooo who's ready to get this show on the road This deserves a new page before we get started. Hahaha it's okay, that song is okay to be on a separate page from the more normal songs on the album

My baby taught me somethin' everybody should learn; When you play with fire it's alright to get burned. It really don't matter if you lose or you win, The only way to do it is to get out on that limb.

"She Lays It All On the Line" only barley managed to escape last place for me as it is somewhat of a jam, but as a whole this song just doesn't work for George and it's always been the one outlier from the album. This also just happens to be the song that got regulated to the ending credits to Pure Country. I'm quite glad relieved to see this out in the bottom two!

I knew "She Lays It All On The Line" would easily be out before the top 5, but bottom 2? Yeah... no lol. It's such a jam! That melody is so infectious and I love the inflections George does in the chorus!

Don't let my last place ranking fool you. I really do love "She Lays It All On The Line"!!! This entire album is just such a jam, and something had to go to the bottom... Overall I find this to be the only somewhat pointless song on the album. Everything else kinda has a niche, but this one occupies the same niche as "Overnight Male" imo. Only not quite as good. We all seemed to more or less agree, as it managed to be our #10 for the entire submission process, aside from a couple lists at the end who tried super hard to save it... If it hadn't been for lady𝓐fan , this would have made the album tracks rankdown thanks to Flops and Kanenrá:ke, despite literally not being a contender at any other point in the submission process!!

My heart is going to break if "Last in Love" doesn't escape the bottom three, so just rip off the bandaid now.

I had a love and it was all mine. I drove her out; I must've been blind. That's the thoughts of a fool thinking out loud. She loved me so, but I was untrue. She's gone for good. What can I do? That's the thoughts of a fool thinking out loud.

I never really expected "Thoughts of a Fool" to make it out of the bottom three, so with that I can at least I'm not surprised and had set my expectations accordingly. I can't say that "Thoughts of a Fool" ever really stood out to me as a highlight from the album when I was younger, but it has aged so well and sounds so good today just as it did back then. This is one of the more underrated songs from the album that I think would grow on the first-time listeners more with each listen.

I ran out of room in my top 5 but "Thoughts Of A Fool" is incredible and I am perplexed at the slew of 10 rankings!

If it didn't come across that way I apologize. I'm sure I'm going to feel the same though for my top-ranked songs on the Matraca Berg rankdown and "She Didn't Have Time" from the Terri Clark album

"Thoughts Of A Fool" is AMAZING, and I love the melody, and George's delivery is absolutely perfect! This is a song that is right in his wheelhouse. I could have easily put it in my top 5 at certain times on any given day.
Unfortunately through the years I have kinda realized that it is one of the more meatless songs on the album. It is basically just two lines, followed by "That's the thoughts of a fool thinking out loud." And then again. And then again a couple more times. And then it's over. So as much as I love it, it found its way back to #8 on my list in favor of some of the more substantive songs on the album.

Blues outside my door; I don't even know if it's raining. But I've been here before, And I don't wanna be here again. Every now and then, Voices on the wind Call me back to the first time. Far away and clear, You can hear the tear drops Falling for the last in love.

"Last In Love" is one of my favorite ballad album tracks of George's career. It has such a unique vibe to it, and George's vocal is also a little bit different somehow, but imo he absolutely knocks this one out of the park. Especially when he gets to the second verse and does the epic belted "It's aaaaaaalllll oooooooveeeer toooooooooooooown" line It's so much higher than you expect him to go, and he nails it so smoothly and beautifully!!!! I could honestly understand why some might find the melody of this song to be boring, but imo it is a highlight of the album. It switches with "Where The Sidewalk Ends" to be my favorite album track depending on the day. It feels like it's leaving too early to me, but at least it escaped the bottom 3. And at least this is the first song to make it into the album tracks rankdown!!!!

I'm a fan of this whole album minus the "Main Title Sequence" track so I still really like "Last In Love" but unfortunately liking a song in an album this strong isn't necessarily enough to have it escape bottom 2 when ranking!

Alright, I'm gonna stop there for tonight. I'm gonna go watch Cars 3 with my sister (I'm trying to finish my list for the PIXAR rankdown!!! Which y'all are still welcome to join as well!! ;) )
Here is the top 7. Which 2 songs do you see missing the top 5?

"Last In Love" is one of my favorite ballad album tracks of George's career. Everything bboat11 said! And at least this is the first song to make it into the album tracks rankdown! I would've been revolting against any idea of not including "Last in Love" in an album tracks rankdown. The two biggest George stans here would've no doubt had to override such a travesty had it occurred.

Which 2 songs do you see missing the top 5? This is where it gets interesting and hard to predict because all of the remaining singles and album tracks are standouts. The hardest song to predict is "When Did You Stop Loving Me" as it just barely escaped the bottom 20 in George's artist rankdown and one has to wonder if single bias alone will be enough to get it into the top five. I have no doubt it has both its fans and its share of detractors, so with that I expect it to be one of the top two most polarizing songs (with "I Cross My Heart" possibly being the most polarizing). I wouldn't place any bets on my predictions, but I'll give it my best shot: 7. Baby Your Baby 6. When Did You Stop Loving Me 5. The King of Broken Hearts 4. Overnight Male 3. Where the Sidewalk Ends 2. I Cross My Heart 1. Heartland

Better baby your baby with a love that's strong. Hold her and tell her you'll never do wrong. Better baby your baby, 'cause if you don't, One day your baby'll be gone.
