"Hey Good Lookin'" is in general just a song that I am not super interested in. It is very campy and unnecessary in general. That being said, Jimmy & Friends do a great job with it! I'd very much rather listen to this version than the Hank Williams original.

"Hey Good Lookin'" by Jimmy and friends is never a go-to song for me, but whenever I happen to listen to it I always quite enjoy it. I fully expected this to be one of the next songs to leave and honestly it managed to make it further than I thought it might ("Fly Me to the Moon" deserved to be higher over this btw!).

"Six Pack to Go" is another duet that's likely on borrowed time.

Dang, "Sea Of Heartbreak" is a great song and the album itself is an underrated one here on Pulse at that. I just think that has more to do with Jimmy Buffett than anything.

I was a bit shocked to see "Sea Of Heartbreak" get as consistently tanked as it was here!! To me, the chorus of this song is straight money. A huge ear worm. I bet it was probably the "Jimmy Buffett Effect", as he unfortunately almost always results in some lower ranks just with his presence. If this was a solo George song, with Tony Brown's production and say on the Somewhere Down in Texas album, I feel like more people would have loved it! Lol

If I were to take a guess, I'd bet that one of the last songs to miss the top 20 is another duet

If I were to take a guess, I'd bet that one of the last songs to miss the top 20 is another duet Yes! In fact, it's the newest song on this list! ;) "Houston Solution" is our final song to miss the top 20. The thing that impresses me most about this one is how great George and Ronnie both sound for their ages! Ronnie sounds older of course, but he still hits some great high notes! And George sounds just like he's in his prime again Melodically though, this song just doesn't have the right sound to compete with most of this list. It would probably do well in a rankdown of Ronnie's new Duets album, but was never going to do well in a rankdown that also has some of George's all-time classics.

Of the songs and duets remaining, "Houston Solution" was the one I was kind of hoping would miss the top 20. That said, one of my all-time favorite George Strait concert memories is that of when Ronnie Milsap was out on tour with him in in 2007 (some relatively unknown singer by the name of Taylor Swift opened lol). Ronnie was just fantastic and it was more or less right before he started to lose that great vocal ability of his.

So far so good! Other than "Fly Me to the Moon" (which I expected to be out soon anyways), I'm quite content with everything that has left thus far. I'm most interested in seeing how some of the songs from the 1970s do back when he was recording for D Records out of Houston. I still expect the top five to be relatively predictable, but I'm looking forward to how everything else plays out from here on out.

the tension builds....
seriously, I can't believe "I Just Can’t Go On Dying Like This" is still in this. Wondering if anyone listened to his remake from Love is Everything which is eons better, and ranked that one. I wanted to gouge out my ears after listening to the original version.

"Big Ball's In Cowtown" is an insanely catchy, toe-tapping swinger that shows off just how much fun George and Asleep at the Wheel have when they sing together. It shits all over "South Of The Border", at the very least! This song is kinda stupid lyrically, but it is just so easy to listen to. It's got a melody that makes you want to dance, which is pretty much the entire point, lol. tim will be sad to see this go, as he loses a top 3. This song was a solid top 15 contender for most of the submission process, before being tanked mercilessly by taylor is terrified with the final list... :(

"(That Don't Change) The Way I Feel About You" is the first of George's early pre-career recordings that got released for the first time on his Strait out of the Box collection. This song is catchy, but nothing particularly special, so I wasn't sure what to expect from it at all. After an initial journey into the top 10, it gradually fell for the rest of the submission process before ultimately landing at #19.
There are other early songs that are waaaay more memorable than this one, at least to me, so I am fine seeing this be the first to go from the early years.

Something has always felt a little bit "off" about "I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name" to me. I think it might be the fact that it doesn't really have a chorus, but it does have a verse that gets repeated like a chorus that is just the exact same melody as the other verses. Idk, the whole song has always just kinda bored me compared to many of the other early songs. Out of the early songs on SootB, this is probably the one that I am most likely to skip, or at least not be in the mood to specifically put on.

Lee Ann Womack is typically pretty well loved on Pulse, but "Everything But Quits" seems to be one of those songs where her fans have drawn a line in the sand and decided they either love it or hate it, lol. It's pretty commonly accepted among Pulse's George and LAW fans that their duet on George's Somewhere Down In Texas album, "Good News, Bad News", is better.
Still, "Everything But Quits" managed to get enough fanfare to nearly escape the bottom 10 here!

George's concert in the Astrodome right before they tore it down has gone on to be one of the most iconic performances of his career. Not only was it an emotional night for him and his fans due to the loss of the building where so many amazing concert and rodeo memories had been made, but it also featured a special appearance from former President George H.W. Bush presenting George with some kind of award.
It is also one of my favorite live concert recordings of all time. The audio quality is absolutely top notch, and George's voice and band are all absolutely perfect!!!! "Take Me Back To Tulsa" isn't the best song on the album by any means (I could have easily had us rank the haunting renditions of "I Can Still Make Cheyenne", "Run", or "Amarillo By Morning", or the rocking "Heartland" if that was the goal), but it was the only song from the album that was not previously released in the studio. So for the sake of variety, it was the only one that made sense to include in this rankdown.

“Big Ball’s In Cowtown” is a JAM! It actually ended up doing a bit better than I was expecting it to, but I do wish it would’ve been able to at least make it to the top 15 (thanks LBTrocks and taylor is terrified!). As I mentioned in previous posts, I’ve grown up with these songs since my early teens and this song is no exception I of course had to rush out to get the album that this song was featured on (I would’ve been 10 when this album got released). I had no idea who Bob Wills was at this point in time, so both this song and album ended up being my introduction to both Western swing as well as to the group Asleep at the Wheel. George would often perform this song in his concerts and you could tell that he and the band were just always having a blast doing so! I can’t revisit the box set without ever putting this song on and it remains one of my “extra” favorites lol. I wasn’t quite sure which of the three songs from the 1970s would exit first, but either way I knew one was coming up sooner or later. As bboat11 mentioned, “(That Don't Change) The Way I Feel About You" is catchy but nothing special that would make it standout in any way. "I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name" was actually one of the songs George selected to feature on the box set that was originally intended to be on a fourth studio album after Right or Wrong. That entire project with producer Ray Baker got scrapped as the new president of MCA Records, Jimmy Bowen, wasn’t satisfied with the end result (both "What Would Your Memories Do" and "Any Old Love Won't Do" are also from those sessions). George and Jimmy ended up going back to the studio to record an entire new album and the rest is Fort Worth history! The more I’ve had to revisit “Everything But Quits” of the course of these rankdowns the more I’ve grown to dislike it. I had appreciated the song enough just based on my casual listening experience, but I’d be content with not having to hear it for a good while. Because of that I ended up sliding this into my bottom 2. Much like “Big Ball’s In Cowtown”, the Bob Wills classic “Take Me Back to Tulsa” is another song that I was introduced to at a young age because of hearing George perform it live in concert. This also ended up far exceeding my expectations, especially given that it’s a live track (I also happened to be at this particular concert lol). I’m glad that bboat11 included this because should George ever decide to record a Western swing album, you can bet that this would be one of the songs he’d include.

10. You Gotta Go Through Hell 9. What Would Your Memories Do 8. Jackson (Live) 7. Kicked Outta Country 6. Murder On Music Row 5. I Know She Still Loves Me 4. The Best Day 3. Designated Drinker 2. I Hate Everything 1. Check Yes Or No
