Kenny Chesney Aiming for No. 2 on Billboard 200 Chart, Drake's 'Scorpion' Set for a Fifth Week at No. 1
News
By Keith Caulfield | July 31, 2018 8:20 PM EDT
Country superstar Kenny Chesney is on track for a No. 2 debut on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart with Songs for the Saints, while Drake’s Scorpion will likely hold onto the top slot for a fifth straight week.
According to industry forecasters, the former set might launch with over 65,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 2, while Scorpion looks like it could earn around 150,000 units.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Aug. 11-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Songs for the Saints will likely bow at No. 2) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Aug. 5.
Assuming Chesney’s Songs bows in the runner-up slot, it will secure the artist his 15th top 10 effort. His last album, the live set Live in No Shoes Nation, bounded in at No. 1 on the Nov. 18, 2017-dated list with 219,000 units (encouraged by sales generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer). Songs is not benefitting from such an offer.
As for Drake, Scorpion should easily score a fifth consecutive week at No. 1, extending the album’s claim as the set with the most weeks at No. 1 in 2018. The last album to earn five weeks at No. 1 was The Weeknd’s Starboy, with five nonconsecutive frames (its debut frame on Dec. 17, 2016, and then four straight weeks between Jan. 21-Feb. 11, 2017).
Next week’s chart will also see new entries from Halestorm’s Vicious and Daughtry’s Cage to Rattle, both of which may launch with around 25,000 units and could graze the bottom of the top 10.

Nicki Minaj was just pushed back (again) to August 17th... Now she’s competing against her best friend, Ariana Grande and labelmate, Drake for the #1 spot!

She was always going to compete against Drake lol
But it's interesting that she's releasing with Ariana and they'll both probably perform at the VMAs on 20th.

I think Ari will easily beat Nicki during release week, but can she beat Drake?

Drake is currently doing 150k and it won't increase in coming weeks so I'd say they both will.

^I was thinking the same. Even Nicki with her original release date should have been able to beat Scorpion. By then, I think it will be closer to 100k SPS.

Drake's 'Scorpion' Spends Fifth Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart 8/5/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Plus: Kenny Chesney, Halestorm and Daughtry debut in the top 10.
For a fifth straight week, Drake’s Scorpion rules the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set continues at No. 1, earning 145,000 equivalent album units (down 21 percent) in the week ending Aug. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, just 12,000 were in traditional sales, as the album continues to be overwhelmingly powered by streaming activity.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 11-dated chart (where Scorpion spends a fifth week at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Of Scorpion’s total of 145,000 units earned in the latest tracking week, 123,000 were in SEA units (translating to 169.6 million on-demand audio streams), 11,000 were in TEA units and 12,000 were in traditional album sales.
Most Weeks at No. 1 in a Year-and-a-Half: With a fifth week at No. 1, Scorpion clocks the most weeks at No. 1 for an album since The Weeknd’s Starboy spent five nonconsecutive weeks atop the list between Jan. 21 and Feb. 11, 2017. The set bowed at No. 1 on the list dated Dec. 17, 2016, and then vacationed from the top slot until Jan. 21, 2017, the first of four more weeks at No. 1.
Most Consecutive Weeks at No. 1 in Two Years: The last album to spend five weeks in a row at No. 1 was Drake’s Views, which claimed its first nine weeks at No. 1 between May 21 and July 16, 2016. Views ruled for a total of 13 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. (Scorpion and Views are also the only two albums to spend their first five weeks at No. 1 since Feb. 2016. Before that, Adele’s 25 spent its first seven weeks at No. 1, between Dec. 12, 2015 and Jan. 23, 2016. In total, 25 notched nine nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.)
Second-Most Most Total Weeks at No. 1 for a Hip-Hop Artist: Drake now has 26 total weeks at No. 1 across his eight leaders. He has now surpassed JAY-Z (25 weeks) to become the sole hip-hop artist with the second-most weeks at No. 1. Among hip-hop acts, only Eminem has more weeks at No. 1 with 32.
Five of the Top 20 Biggest Streaming Weeks for an Album: In the latest tracking week, Scorpion generated 169.6 million on-demand audio streams for its 25 tunes. In turn, that ranks as the No. 20 largest streaming week for an album. Scorpion’s first four weeks are also currently the Nos. 1, 3, 7 and 12th-biggest streaming weeks overall.
At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Kenny Chesney debuts with his latest studio effort, Songs for the Saints. The album bows with 77,000 units earned (with 65,000 of that sum in traditional album sales). Songs is Chesney’s debut for Warner Music Nashville after a long tenure with Sony Music Nashville.
Songs is Chesney’s 15th top 10 album on the Billboard 200, and continues his hit streak of top 10s: since 2004, every one of his 14 charting albums have debuted in the top 10. (He also logged a top 10 with 2002’s No. 1 No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.)
Among country artists, the only acts with more top 10s than Chesney on the Billboard 200 are George Strait (20), Garth Brooks (19) and Tim McGraw (18). Songs is the latest No. 2-debuting album to be blocked from a No. 1 bow on the Billboard 200 courtesy of Scorpion’s dominance atop the list. On the July 28-dated chart, Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers 2 opened in the top slot, while in Scorpion’s opening week (the July 14 chart), Florence + The Machine’s High as Hope debuted and peaked in the No. 2 slot. (A silver lining, perhaps: all three acts -- Chesney, Khalifa and Florence + The Machine -- have previously topped the list at least once before with an earlier album.)
At No. 3 on the new Billboard 200, Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys is down one slot with 62,000 units (down 5 percent). Juice WRLD’s Goodbye & Good Riddance rises 6-4 with 39,000 units (down 2 percent), Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy is steady at No. 5 with a little more than 38,000 units (down 6 percent) and XXXTentacion’s ? falls two slots to No. 6 with 38,000 units (down 8 percent). The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again soundtrack retreats 3-7 with 37,000 units (down 24 percent) earned in its third week. Another soundtrack, The Greatest Showman, moves 8-9 with 28,000 units (down 10 percent).
Two rock bands notch their latest top 10s, as Halestorm and Daughtry’s newest efforts arrive at Nos. 8 and 10, respectively. Halestorm’s Vicious starts at No. 8 with 29,000 units (27,000 in traditional album sales), marking the second top 10 for the band. The act previously visited the region with their last studio effort, 2015’s Into the Wild Life, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 with 57,000 units earned in its first week.
After a long wait, Daughtry is back with its first new studio set in nearly five years, as Cage to Rattle bows at No. 10 with 26,000 units (24,000 in traditional album sales). Cage is the group’s fifth top 10 effort. The band’s previous studio release, 2013’s Baptized, debuted and peaked at No. 6. (In between Baptized and Cage, the group issued the best-of collection It’s Not Over… The Hits So Far, which reached No. 43 in 2016.)

Cody Jinks must've just missed the Top 10. That album sold decently.

Streaming is again where it is at for the big albums. The only albums posting any sort of significant sales numbers are not hip-hop

Kenny Chesney Scores 15th Top 10 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Songs for the Saints'
8/5/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Kenny Chesney logs his 15th top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart as Songs for the Saints debuts at No. 2.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 11-dated chart (where Songs bows at No. 2) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Songs -- which was released on July 27 through Blue Chair/Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville -- earned 77,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 65,000 were in traditional album sales. Songs is Chesney’s debut for Warner Music Nashville, after a long tenure with Sony Music Nashville.
Songs is Chesney’s 15th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 and continues his hit streak of top 10s. Since 2004, every one of his 14 charting albums have debuted in the top 10. (He also logged a top 10 with 2002’s No. 1 No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.)
Among country artists, the only acts with more top 10s than Chesney on the Billboard 200 are George Strait (20), Garth Brooks (19) and Tim McGraw (18).
Songs for the Saints was inspired by the “spirit and resilience of the people who live in the islands” impacted by 2017’s Hurricane Irma. Proceeds from the album benefit Chesney's Love for Love City Foundation, which funds relief efforts in St. John and the Virgin Islands. Chesney himself had a home in St. John that was destroyed by Irma.
After the loss, Chesney told HNL, "That place and the people mean so much more to me than my house… I'm gonna do everything that I possibly can to try to relieve some stress from people that I've really grown to love over the years, who have meant so much to my life. This place, these islands, have… shaped me as a human being."

Album Sales 26 5 8 38 reputation , Taylor Swift 1
I don't understand when HDD had this at #11 in sales; looking at HDD's estimates, #11 has more than 100% more sales than #26, so I don't see why they would be that far off...

^^ I wonder why her sales did fall off so much this week though ^^?? It went from 8 to 5 to 26 this week?? It is strange that it was predicted to fall to a normal position and not this huge of a drop.

Probably not much of a spike, it does not show up in the BB200 or catalog charts. A small uptick in vinyl sales is probably what did it

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Aug. 11), Drake’s Scorpion was a non-mover at No. 1, scoring a fifth week atop the list. The set earned 145,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 2, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, just 12,000 were in traditional album sales, as the set continues to be overwhelmingly powered by streaming activity. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— Soundtrack, The Greatest Showman – No. 9 — As the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman spends a 30th nonconsecutive week in the top 10, it becomes one of just seven soundtracks to earn at least 30 weeks in the top 10 in the past 50 years. The former No. 1 album bowed on the chart dated Dec. 30, 2017 at No. 71, rose to No. 63 the following week, and then to No. 5 in its third frame. It ruled at No. 1 for two weeks (in its fourth and fifth weeks), and has been among the top 10 in all but just four of its total 34 chart weeks.
In the past 50 years, since the chart dated Aug. 10, 1968, just seven soundtracks have spent 30 weeks in the top 10. In the last half-century, the Dirty Dancing soundtrack spent the most weeks in the region, with 48 frames between 1987 and 1988. The Whitney Houston-led The Bodyguard is next, with 42 weeks in 1992, 1993 and 1994, followed by Frozen (41 weeks in 2014), Prince and The Revolution’s Purple Rain (37, 1984-1985), Saturday Night Fever (35; 1978) and The Lion King (31; 1994-1995).
— Kanye West, ye – No. 25 — The album nets a 4 percent unit gain (rising to 18,000 units earned), but also a big 70 percent increase in album sales (jumping to 6,000 sold), thanks to the vinyl LP release of the album. The vinyl edition of the set was released on July 27, and follows its CD configuration bow on June 29, and its initial streaming and digital download issue on June 1. The album debuted atop the Billboard 200 dated June 16 courtesy of its streaming and download activity, with 208,000 equivalent album units earned (of which 85,000 were download album sales).
— Anne-Marie, Speak Your Mind – No. 74 — The album — with 10,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Aug. 2, according to Nielsen Music — rises with a 27 percent gain thanks largely to streaming activity by its newly added track, "Don't Leave Me Alone" (David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie).
— Boz Scaggs, Out of the Blues – No. 82 — The veteran artist notches his 18th entry on the Billboard 200, as his newest blues effort bows at No. 82 with 9,000 equivalent album units earned (nearly all from traditional album sales). Over on the sales-ranked Blues Albums chart, Out of the Blues bows at No. 1, securing Scaggs his third leader on the tally. Scaggs made his Billboard 200 chart debut on April 17, 1971, when Moments arrived at No. 187. He went as high as No. 2 on the list with 1976’s Silk Degrees, which spent five weeks parked in the runner-up slot.
— Florida Georgia Line, Dig Your Roots – No. 117 — Dig Your Roots nets a 100th week on the list, becoming the country duo's third (of three) full-length sets to spend 100 weeks on the tally. It follows 2014's Anything Goes (101 weeks) and 2012's Here's to the Good Times (256).
