Yay Down Under made it. Idk why I felt that it would get out early but glad that I was wrong.

"Separate Ways" was the top ten I expected to lose first. Glad it made the top thirty. REALLY surprised Donna Summer didn't make the top 20, but kind of glad, to be honest.
One song really didn't deserve to make the top 20 (though it's not a surprise). The rest, I'm fine with.

I swear in every rankdown I have so many high ranks and then I have the one two songs in my lower bottom half.

Bite your tongue. One of the BEST ever made! Oh don't get me wrong, I agree, that wall-keyboard alone makes it iconic! I've just seen it on a lot of "worst-of" lists...
I've even professed my love for it here.
Yes! The wall keyboard sequence is the BEST.

Too bad we're not doing rankdown stats because I'm not doing too bad edition:
30. Separate Ways---The keyboard in the wall aside, the song is decent and it's delivered with some brio by singer Steve Perry. Also, the video had the right amount of cheese. You want a really bad video...
29. Safety Dance---Let's talk about this monstrosity which feels like the world's worst renaissance fair. As for the song, I get the novelty factor (and yes, that was surprising to learn about its history) but it feels like a joke only they got.
28. Dirty Laundry---The lyrics have real meaning, Don Henley sells the hell out of it, and it mixes synthesizers and guitars seamlessly. Sadly, it's more true than ever in 2018. PS for the Rock Rankdowners: Workin' It was reminding me of this song. PPS: This was my top 10 I was expecting to see go down first.
27. China Girl---Had no idea that Niles Rodgers was behind this. Was a bit worried about the title, but the lyrics weren't really a problem. It grew on me a bit.
26. Always Something There to Remind Me---The wedding bells at the beginning is kinda iconic for me and what follows is a solidly crafted song.
25. I'm Still Standing---I've heard some video places (cough*Watch Mojo*cough) refer to this as a bad video. I think the pantomime in the beach was clever. It may look dated, but hey Elton is still standing. Song is fine and defiant, and that's good enough for me.
24. She Works Hard for the Money---I could have sworn the video was about a woman suffering a nervous breakdown when the stress gets to be too much. I listened to this on Spotify and it was decent and that's what I judge...not the video.
23. Photograph---Somehow I knew Doc would have placed this number one. This is the Def Leppard I choose to remember. Fierce rock, solid singing, yeah.
22. Fascination---For some reason, I had this confused with Obsession by Animotion. Yeah, that was a better song, sorry.
21. Rock the Kasbah---Before this listen, I thought this might have made my top 20. I think the sound effects especially in the second verse detracted.
Left: 1-3, 7-11, 13, 15, 19, 22, 24, 26-27, 33, 38, 44, 47, 60. Pretty good if I can say so myself with 7 top 10s left and no bottom 40s left (I can never do that in the rock ones, hmm.)

This making it almost to the Top 20 is a happy surprise. Loved this AND the Mirror Man. So much more than Don't You Want Me - which is up there w/ Every Breath You Take as incredibly overplayed to the point where blood drains from my ears when I hear either....

Always Something There To Remind Me Naked Eyes
Total Points: 1805
Billboard Hot 100: 8
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 46
From: Burning Bridges
Synthpop version of the 1964 Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition. This peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending June 8, 1983.
This placed inside the Top 50 on 24 of your lists, the most for any song yet...
[
I used to get really excited when hearing this song, but over the years I find myself listening to Promises, Promises a lot more in which I kinda strongly prefer.

When your lowest rank remaining is 58 and it's the only bottom half that you have remaining and you still have 12 of your top 13 still in, then you can call this a great Rankdown. Although my 48 (2nd Lowest rank remaining) is probably making the top 5. I really hope though that it doesn't, good song but I always found it a little overrated.

Don't expect my "Photograph" ranking to be an indication of where I'll be ranking other Def Leppard songs, that's literally the only song of theirs I still like.
(also "Separate Ways" will probably be the only time I rank a Journey song outside of my bottom 10 :kii:)
Anyways: 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 32, 33, 42, 49, 54, 55. Yeah, still have a couple of (bare) bottom half ranks remaining, but for the first time in one of these 80s rankdowns at this stage, I can say that I think every song remaining is at least decent.

The Safety Dance Men Without Hats
Total Points: 1757
Billboard Hot 100: 3(4)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 35
From: Rhythm Of Youth
Huge hit single for Canadian band Men Without Hats. It reached the Top 40 in over a dozen countries and spent 4 weeks at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the Autumn of 1983.
The song is a protest against bouncers stopping dancers "pogoing" to new wave music in clubs.

Dirty Laundry Don Henley
Total Points: 1777
Billboard Hot 100: 3(3)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 48
From: I Can't Stand Still
Second single from the album I Can't Stand Still, this peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA.
The song is a biting critique of TV news reporting and journalism.
A few more Top 10's tumble with this leaving the rankdown...
craziaskowboi - 11
This is one of the most prophetic songs ever written. The final stanza of lyrics say it best: We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing When it's said and done, we haven't told you a thing We all know that crap is king Give us dirty laundry!Yes, your favorite cable TV news network is just as guilty as any other. Don't pretend otherwise. Don't insist that other networks are more wronger than your favorite one. Don't assume that I'm only talking to those who watch a specific network. This is a universal statement that applies to everybody who watches ANY cable TV network on a regular basis.

China Girl David Bowie
Total Points: 1789
Billboard Hot 100: 10
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 62
From: Let's Dance
This Iggy Pop cover was released in late May of 1983 as the second single from Bowie's album Let's Dance. It was originally written during Bowie and Pop's time in Berlin.
It was produced by Nile Rodgers and peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and within the Top 20 in over 15 countries.
craziaskowboi - 49

I'm Still Standing Elton John
Total Points: 1822
Billboard Hot 100: 12
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 74
From: Too Low for Zero (2 ↓ 4 0)
Peaking at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, this was the second single released from the album Too Low for Zero in July of 1983. It would help to propel the album to become his biggest seller of the 80's.
Elton said this was "my reaction to still being relevant and successful in the early 1980s, post-punk and with the New-Romantics creeping in."
craziaskowboi - 2
This song is very special to me. It was my very first 7" vinyl single when I was a child. My mom bought it for me when she noticed that I liked the song. It's my favorite 1980s Elton John song by a significant margin. I'm actually surprised that it lasted this long; I figured it'd be gone in the 40s or 50s, but it lasted into the Top 25. Sweeet.

She Works Hard For The Money Donna Summer
Total Points: 1888
Billboard Hot 100: 3(3)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 15
From: She Works Hard For The Money
Written by Donna Summer and Michael Omartian, this anthem for working blue collar women was released as the first single from the album of the same name. It was a huge success, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 where it remained for 3 weeks.
5 more Top 10's fall with this leaving the rankdown...
craziaskowboi - 15
I've always liked the pace of this song, and the powerful percussion. When I was in my middle school band, we played this song at my 7th-grade spring concert, and a bunch of us were excited to play a somewhat contemporary pop song for a change (this was in the early 1990s). We thought we rocked it, but in hindsight we probably butchered it. Oh well.

Songs remaining (in alphabetical order by Artist)...
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart Daryl Hall and John Oates - Maneater David Bowie - Let's Dance Dexys Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Irene Cara - Flashdance... What A Feeling Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing Men At Work - Down Under Michael Jackson - Beat It Michael Jackson - Billie Jean Michael Jackson - Human Nature Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' Michael Sembello - Maniac Prince - 1999 Prince - Little Red Corvette Spandau Ballet - True Stevie Nicks - Stand Back The Police - Every Breath You Take Toto - Africa
1, 6, 7, 9, 16, 18, 19, 25, 26, 28, 36, 42, 43, 53, 66, 71, 82, 87, 92, 100. Wow, I still have my #1 and my #100 left. I haven't done too well clearing out my bottom 20, but half the songs that are left are in my top 30, so I'm content. I actually expect my #100 to reach the top 10, but the rest of my bottom 20 to bow out before then. I also expect my #1 to be in strong contention for #1, though it wouldn't surprise me if people have deliberately tanked it just to cause chaos.

#23. Photograph - Def Leppard (HOT 100 #12) (DOC #1 for 9 weeks)No way anyone was gong to rank a Def Leppard song higher than me. This is my actual #1 song for 1983 and my favorite Rock song of all 80's. So my #1 Def Leppard songs last longer among the Pop crowd that the Rock crowd? Hmmmm...... I think I might be placing Def Leppard songs at #1 on all PULSE Y/E rank Downs from now on. Here is their iconic Music Video

Lost quite a few top 10's tonight including my favorite Rock song of the 80's. I'll showcase MV for the ones I ranked in the top 10. #30. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) - JourneyHere is a song I'll put in my top 10 every day of the year for years to come. For me it's Journey's Most epic Rock song. Red will recall me ranking this one at #1 on one of his Rock journey countdowns. #29. The Safety Dance - Men Without HatsThis song is untouchable when it comes to silly New Wave Dance music. #28. Dirty Laundry - Don Henley (DOC #26) 1982I charted both this and "Johnny Can't Read" in 1982. I preferred "Johnny Can't Read" taking it top 5 on my personal charts. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYEm76840Yo#27. China Girl - David BowieI wish this would have beat out "Let's Dance" it more diverse in melody. My favorite of his three 1983 singles, didn't even make the year end list. #26. Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked EyesLove this song too much. I didn't even know it was a cover till many years later. #25. I'm Still Standing - Elton JohnThis is actually one of my fvaorite Elton John songs. Nice to see it get all this love. #24. She Works Hard For The Money - Donna SummerDonna was spectacular in the 70's. "Bad Girls", "Hot Stuff", etc.., but she needed to work a bit harder in the 80's for me to really get into this song. #22. (Keep Feeling) Fascination - Human Leaguedamn another top 10 loss. One of the best aspects of this group was how they all did their part in the vocal department. I think Philip Oakey has one of the best Baritone vocals in music. Come to think of it ,Human League is probably the only 80's icon group you won't find in my current weekly chart. #21. Rock The Casbah - The ClashI'm happy to say this one made my top 100 of 1982 all the way at #15. Most radio year end lists charted this one in 1982.

55. Come Dancing (66): I only heard this song in the later 1990s. It's a cool, retro-inspired tune. I liked other songs a bit more, but I'm happy it made it this far.
54. Jeopardy (22): WHAT??!! A BIG hit back home, and a personal 1983 favorite that I've loved since 1983. Pretty good melody, music (great synth, drums, guitar combo) and vocals. Should've been MUCH HIGHER.
53. Affair of the Heart (86): Not a hit back home, and I definitely didn't remember it before this RD. Not bad, but just typical pop that didn't stand out. Surprised it made the top 50 over other songs... In any case, good to finally clear my bottom 20.
52. Time (55): Right time for this to leave the RD. It's a good song, popular back home, but I liked other songs better this year.
51. You Can't Hurry Love (44): Glad to see this wasn't tanked much. He did a great job with this cover, in terms of being loyal to the original, but also with great 1980s sounds of drums and brass. One of my favorite Phil Collins songs ever. Another of my top 5 1980s Phil Collins songs was also released in 1983, but I've just realized that it flopped in the US (!!). It was the second biggest hit of this era back home (following YCHL). I loved the brass, drums, melody, especially that 'over and over' part.
50. Mickey (36): A personal favorite as a kid. I really liked that video (in high rotation back home), and the whole 80s fun vibe of the song. It was also a big hit back home that's still played in 80s radio stations. I thought it wasn't gonna make the top half of this RD, so I'm pleasantly surprised :)
49. I'll Tumble 4 Ya (73): I used to like this song quite a lot back in the day, but then I thought it was a far too simple song, especially compared with other Culture Club songs. They did this style of song much better with It's A Miracle and Miss Me Blind.
48. It's A Mistake (53): I wasn't a huge fan of this song in 1983, although it was quite popular back home (and my brother really liked it). The video was great (as most of MAW's), but the song style wasn't my favorite. With time, I've grown to appreciate it much more, as this had a different sound for them.
47. Electric Avenue (60): A popular song back home. I liked the music and overall style of the song, although I wasn't a big fan of the bridge and the Oh-Nos... By the way, a minor hit in radio stations, but a personal favorite due to its reggae-is vibe was I Don't Wanna Dance
46. Goody Two Shoes (52): I really liked this high-energy, retro 80s bop back in the day. It was a minor hit back home, both in radio and TV.
45. You Got Lucky (33): I had forgotten about this one! I mean, it wasn't a big hit back home, but it was played a bit. I think this has a timeless, classic feel, with great music, melody and vocals. That mix of synth and guitar sounds is pretty good.
44. Is There Something I Should Know? (63): I'm a DD fan, but this one is outside my top 15 DD songs. Not a big fan of the verses, especially.
43. Do You Really Want To Hurt Me (25): NOO!!! This could've easily ended up in my top 20 for this RD. One of my favorites this year, and a very popular song back home that has the most recurrent plays among Culture Club hits. I loved the reggae vibe, plus the more spiritual chorus. The whole chill vibe was a great complement to Boy's vocals. A real 1980s classic.
42. She Blinded Me With Science (54): A strong, quirky, unique 1980s-sounding song, that was a hit back home and that I really liked as well. Good to see it in the 40s.
41. Twilight Zone (49): I only heard this song in the early 2000s. I liked the new wave vibe complemented with good guitar sounds.

I think you guys will recall quite a few of these?
Let's begin with my top 40 of 1983.
40. INXS - Don't Change (HOT 100 #80) (DOC #4) Both "the One Thing" and "Don't Change" made thier way onto my 1983 charts. This is one of my Top 3 INXS songs.
39. ?
38. Berlin - The Metro (HOT 100 #58) (DOC #3) Both "Sex( I'm A.....)" and "The Metro" made my top 100. Once again the Haunting Synth lines of these New Wave classics got me hooked time after time.
37. Naked Eyes - Promises Promises (HOT 100 #11) (DOC #3)
36. Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know (HOT 100 #4) (DOC #5)
35. Night Ranger - Don't Tell Me You Love Me (HOT 100 #40) (DOC #5) Long before "Sister Christian", Night Ranger were rocking their way up the HOT 100. This one peaked at #40, but it also opened the door for them. This was also the first ever song that I charted from Night Ranger. MTV and KLOS were responsible for my loving this song. The breakdown with Jack Blades and the synths is epic.
34. Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself (HOT 100 #102) (DOC #3) Originally under the Gen X name, the song appeared on the charts in 1981 on Billy Idol's, first album 'Don't Stop".The album got a re release in 1983 but the song still failed to crack the HOT 100. It does however remain a New Wave classic of the 80's. This is the original Music Video I remember from the MTV days.
33. New Order - Blue Monday (U.K. #9) (DOC #3) The first Top 10 hit for the band in the U.K. didn't even chart in the U.S. HOT 100. That didn't stop this from appearing on Multiple New Wave year end lists. Including mine. This Music Video apparantly combines Official footage and live clips from their famous Top Of The Pops performance
32. Billy Idol - White Wedding (HOT 100 #36) (DOC #3) Billy Idol's second 1983 single also got mad spin action of MTV. It was also played a few times on KLOS and almost once every hour on KROQ. The also got a rerelease in the U.K in 1986 finally giving it a top 10 performance. I loved the fact that it sounded like New Wave Punk Rock.
31. Flock Of Seagulls - Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) (HOT 100 #26) (DOC #4) The New Wave vibe continues on my year end chart with the first single off 'Listen'. I charted this band right into the late 80's, but this was their last top 5 on my charts. This song is another example of a beautifully haunting spacey melody played on Synthesizers.

40. She's A Beauty (74): I only learned about this song in the early 00s. It sounds good and all, but it hasn't grabbed much of my attention to tank t higher... 39. Overkill (27): This was a big hit back home, and my second favorite song of them. I really liked the melody, music (that sax!) and the impassioned vocals especially in the second half of the song. Wish it hd ended up a tad higher in this RD, as this one has lots of good musical and personal memories, considering that my brother was a fan of MAW -and curiously also of the next song... 38. Der Kommissar (80): Mmm. A clarification is warranted here. I ranked it this low just because I was judging this cover. Had this been the original version by Falco, it would've easily been in my top 20. Falco's was a random hit back home, and my brother and I really liked it, including the low-budget but still cool video :) The new wave sound, that bridge and the whole Schau Schaus were quite catchy. However, this English cover paled in comparison! It didn't have the flow or melody of the original. Plus, German sounded much cooler (With this one leaving, I cleared my bottom 35!) 37. Steppin' Out (37): P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!! Another song my brother and I really liked.A hit back home, including in TV stations where the video got good rotation. I love this sophisti-pop style when it's done right, and the piano and synth combo and the overall melody were pretty good --and the dude sang it pretty well, too. This is the Joe Jackson song I enjoyed the most. The combination of Jazzy pianos with 80's New Wave style really hit the mark. This was a hit in my charts, but didn't make my top 100 of 1982. 36. Promises, Promises (59): This is a good song, that was also a mid-size hit in our radios. However, it's not in my top 4 songs of NE. It was great to see them perform this live last month, though!! 35. I Know There's Something Going On (21): YASSS!!! I'm glad this made it this far. I wish it had been higher, but this is already good. The song wasn't that big of a hit back home, but when I rediscovered it in the late 80s when doing my decade ranking, I LOVED it. Those drums were A+ and complemented Frida's lead and backing vocals superbly. The melody and vibe were excellent as well. The best post-Abba song made by any of them IMO. One Night In Bangkok is also a strong song, but I prefer Frida's. Agnetha unfortunately hasn't released any song at that level. Neither of her 1983 'hit' singles Can't Shake Lose or The Heat Is On were strong. (My favorite from her actually came only in 2004 with her version of If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind" 34. Our House (41): Another of those uniquely sounding, FUN, pop, almost weird 1980s songs, with the change in rhythm in the chorus or the multiple vocals in the lead to the musical bridge, etc. Good to see them this high! 33. Back On The Chain Gang (9): Oh, boooo!!! This was a big hit back home, and I loved this song since the first moment I heard that intro. My favorite Pretenders song, and one of my favorite rock-pop songs of the 1980s (add Goodbye to You, Call Me and a few others to the list). The second half is particularly strong, with the background vocals (including male vocals) leading and after the bridge, the drum beats in the final section of the song, and of course the guitar. The melancholic sound of this song brings back far too many childhood memories... Plus, I've used this song in multiple road-trips that it's kept attaching life memories. 32. Too Shy (39): That video was SO popular back home! The song too, but that video was even more popular! I really liked this song. That almost mysterious intro, with that melodic verse painted with a delicate piano sound, and then the more bass- and synth- based chorus. Another very unique song. I bought the 45 RPM, which had an instrumental version of the song as the B side... so there were lots of karaoke action in my living room with this one back then 31. Gloria (50): My favorites from LB were Self Control (by far) and Lucky One. This was a great cover, though. It wasn't a big hit back home, primarily because it was already OLD news. The original song by Umberto Tozzi had been a BIG hit back in 1979-80 in both Italian and Spanish --so we didn't really need an English version. It was cute to see her video performing the song though By the way, Laura's Imagination (from the Flashdance soundtrack) had A LOT of rotation in our music TV channel --I was a fan of that video!!
