1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20 23, 24, 34, 36, 48
This is a stellar top 20 but I expected nothing less for this year. Aside from my #48, I think that the rest of the remaining songs are excellent. I'm glad that "Separate Ways" was able to sneak into the top 30. I was worried it would go out much sooner. I'm also happy with how well "Photograph" did. It would've been nice if "Rock the Casbah" had made the top 20 though.

^”Imagination” should have been a single. Could have been released between “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” and “Self Control.” Great song.

30. Separate Ways (18): I didn't like the video back at that time either However, I did like the song quite a bit, plus this was a a hit back home. The guitars, drums, synths, and Steve vocals were a great combo. It had a pure rock sound that still sounds strong. 29. The Safety Dance (29): P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!!! A big hit back home (yearend top 15) and a personal favorite. I just loved the sound, vibe, and chorus melody. Another example of quirky, different type of 1980s songs. Worth mention that they had a minor hit with "Antarctica", which was their next song played in our radio stations in 1984. 28. Dirty Laundry (65): I liked it back then, but I wasn't a huge fan of it. The music is dope, and Don sings it very convincingly. The chorus could be better for me, though. Anyway. I admit I may have under-ranked it a bit. In 1983 the song that was a HIT back home was Johny Can't Read. I guess it sounded much more mainstream pop than DL. My brother and I liked that one quite a bit, so we have it in 45 rpm :) Plus, there was a Spanish version of it that helped with radio rotation as well 27. China Girl (34): A song that I wasn't a big fan of initially, and I found the video (popular back home) somewhat creepy -not sure why. With time, I grew to love it, and really appreciate the melody, sound and vocals. 26. Always Something There to Remind Me (32): Another 1980s classic! Starting from that intro! hey did a great job with this cover, really transforming it into something else. A popular song back home and a song that has passed the test of time for me. I'm not sure if I can say this is my favorite NE song, but the top 3 is very close...my other favorite is their 1983 song "Voices in my Head" (LOVE the music of that one), which wasn't as popular in radio, but had a video that was a bit more popular than that of ASTTRM. And of course their 1984 personal top 3 (What) in the Name of Love. I was a bit disappointed when they played a rockier version of What, and didn't play Voices in the recent 80s concert 25. I'm Still Standing (47): Like Dirty Laundry, I under-ranked this one a bit. I really liked Elton John, and this type of high energy was a favorite of mine (although sometimes I mix it with I'm So Excited or Tell Her About It ). This was a HIT back home, and one of many EJ songs I liked this decade. That video is so deliciously gay for its time, and I love it even more now :) 24. She Works Hard for the Money (30): This was another good song in her discography. Very popular back home, and another song that would've reached the top of my personal chart. I liked the music quite a bit, as it had a great combo of brass, guitar, synth sounds, with great lead and background vocals (including those in the last minute or so). I also really liked the video. Almost like a telenovela episode :) Donna had a couple other hits in 1983 back home, that would've made the top 150 of my personal chart that year. Unconditional Love, with Pass The Dutchie's Musical Youth, that had a feel-good melody, tropical vibe, and a good combo of her strong vocals with the happy MY vocals Plus, her contribution to the Flashdance soundtrack, that was played more in our TVs than in radios, but was still a personal favorite. That new wave sound, darker melody hit me hard at that time. Curiously, I don't know why the few DJs that played the song weren't sure if it was a song by Donna Summer or Irene Cara, so I was always confused at who was the singer when I'd go to the disco store to try to find the single to buy! :) 23. Photograph (45): Strong rock song. It wasn't a hit back home, and I only discovered it in the 2000s, but it's a very good representative of traditional, legitimate 80s rock. 22. Fascination (42): Well, before the reveals of this RD I did say that this was the hardest RD for me. There are just a lot of good songs here and it was hard to rank all these solid songs. This is a solid song, that still sounds fresh nowadays. That lower-tone "he-e-e-ey" that Philip sings is so random, unusual, but cool, plus the ladies do a great job as well. 21. Rock the Kasbah (13): YES!!!! This would've been a personal chart-topper that year. It was a very popular song that year and remained popular throughout the 80s. My favorite Clash song. It has a unique sound, great percussion and overall instrumentation, melody, and vocals. Great to see it this high!! So I still have 8 of my top 10 left. Yay! 1-7, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 19, 20, 23, 24, 26, 31, 56, 61 I knew that the remaining songs in my bottom half would still be here in the top 20, based on previous RD. These songs may be by legends, but I honestly couldn't rank them inside my top 50 and I just think that they are loved more because of who they are sung by than because of their strengths... maybe not.

Looks like a got a hefty update to showcase. Few of these we have already ran into. 57. Bryan Adams - Cuts Like A Knife (HOT 100 #15) (DOC #6)IMOP, "Straight From The Heart" was the weakest way to introduce Bryan into the American music charts. Elsewhere Rock format radio stations were playing killer jams like this. 56. Spandau Ballet - Gold (HOT 100 #29) (DOC #8)Easily the most classy of the New Romantic bands of the 80's. Mixing Jazz, New Wave , Soul and Synthpop into memorable classics like these. 53. Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way (HOT 100 #44) (DOC #5)Here is a great New Wave band that got shut out by the HOT 100. This song had a strong vibe to David Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes". They also were popluar in early 90's on Modern Rock chart, but no longer had this awesome New Wave vibe to their music. One song I did love was from Richard Butler's Love Spit Love band called "Am I Wrong" 51. ABC - Poison Arrow (HOT 100 #25) (DOC #7)This song was released in early 1982 in the U.K., but made its way onto the American 1983 charts later that year, because of "The Look Of Love" chart fame. Naturally it crossed over into my 1983 chart as well. 49. Huey Lewis & News - Heart And Soul (HOT 100 #8) (DOC #4)This is the first song from 'Sports' I charted. It easily made my top 50, but somehow misses Billboards 1983 top 100, even after reaching #8. 42. The Fixx - One Thing Leads To Another (HOT 100 #4) (DOC #4)Can't recall if the song got shut out of the 1983 year end chart or was taken into account in 1984. Either way, both HOT 100 and I peaked it at #4. This is also my highest charting Fixx song. 41. Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey (HOT 100 #25) (DOC #5)Another Favorite among the 1982-83 New wave charts was this song. This was the first Peter Gabriel song I recall hearing on the radio. I remember instantly loving that Japanese like synth hook. - I don't recall hearing Cuts Like a Knife in 1983... but it was played sometime in 86-88 after the big success of the Reckless era and the more tepid reaction to Heat of the Night. I liked it quite a bit. - Gold was a favorite of mine and a hit back home in 1983, and I was VERY surprised to know that it was such an underperformed in the US. I LOVED that sophistipop style. That elegant intro, with such strong and passionate vocals, and then the percussion throughout the song but especially in the bridge, plus the piano, brass, etc. This one, Only When You Leave and True are personal chart-toppers (and in the 00s I would look them up in karaokes ) - Love My Way wasn't a hit back home... I discovered it in the early 00s when I'd buy CDs with long 1980s mixes to a friend DJ back home. This was a great discovery back then! BUT, THANKS for reminding me of "Am I Wrong"!!!!! I haven't been able to dust off my chart notebooks from the 1990s that are back home, to listen to some of the alternative / modern rock tracks of the 1990s, that I've sort of forgotten. I hadn't heard this one in 15+ years, and it was great to listen to it again!! - Poison Arrow wasn't a hit either, and I discovered it when I bought their compilation CD. This is another sophistipop act that had several songs I really liked. This is good, but not in my top 5 ABC songs... - Heart & Soul was a big hit back home, with good recurrent airplay. It's my third favorite HL&TN songs, following TPOL and SWY. And WTF with Billboard not including this one in any yearend ranking? Really hard to follow why this happened with a few top 10 hits this year... - One Thing Leads to Another is another case of WTF Billboard, as it's not in any yearend chart. A hit back home and a song that would've likely topped my personal chart back then. Still like it. - Shock the Monkey was SO GOOD!! My favorite Peter Gabriel song. That video was great, too, with lots of rotation back home, and the song itself was a hit back home.

I think you guys will recall quite a few of these? Let's begin with my top 40 of 1983. 40. INXS - Don't Change (HOT 100 #80) (DOC #4)Both "the One Thing" and "Don't Change" made thier way onto my 1983 charts. This is one of my Top 3 INXS songs. 38. Berlin - The Metro (HOT 100 #58) (DOC #3)Both "Sex( I'm A.....)" and "The Metro" made my top 100. Once again the Haunting Synth lines of these New Wave classics got me hooked time after time. 35. Night Ranger - Don't Tell Me You Love Me (HOT 100 #40) (DOC #5)Long before "Sister Christian", Night Ranger were rocking their way up the HOT 100. This one peaked at #40, but it also opened the door for them. This was also the first ever song that I charted from Night Ranger. MTV and KLOS were responsible for my loving this song. The breakdown with Jack Blades and the synths is epic. 34. Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself (HOT 100 #102) (DOC #3)Originally under the Gen X name, the song appeared on the charts in 1981 on Billy Idol's, first album 'Don't Stop".The album got a re release in 1983 but the song still failed to crack the HOT 100. It does however remain a New Wave classic of the 80's. This is the original Music Video I remember from the MTV days. 33. New Order - Blue Monday (U.K. #9) (DOC #3)The first Top 10 hit for the band in the U.K. didn't even chart in the U.S. HOT 100. That didn't stop this from appearing on Multiple New Wave year end lists. Including mine. This Music Video apparantly combines Official footage and live clips from their famous Top Of The Pops performance 32. Billy Idol - White Wedding (HOT 100 #36) (DOC #3)Billy Idol's second 1983 single also got mad spin action of MTV. It was also played a few times on KLOS and almost once every hour on KROQ. The also got a rerelease in the U.K in 1986 finally giving it a top 10 performance. I loved the fact that it sounded like New Wave Punk Rock. 31. Flock Of Seagulls - Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) (HOT 100 #26) (DOC #4)The New Wave vibe continues on my year end chart with the first single off 'Listen'. I charted this band right into the late 80's, but this was their last top 5 on my charts. This song is another example of a beautifully haunting spacey melody played on Synthesizers. - I don't recall Don't Change being played in pop radio stations back home. I only discovered it in the 00s when I bought an INXS compilation --and it quickly became a favorite. It was my #11 INXS song in the recent RD (that likely won't be finished before this RD lol). - A big shoutout to THE METRO!! A HIT back home in both radio and TV. I really liked the song (and video), to the point of buying the 45 RPM. That high energy, synth sound, especially in the bridge is great. - Dancing With Myself was a BIG HIT, but in 1984, actually becoming one of the biggest songs of the year. A personal chart topper as well. White Wedding was also a hit back home. Billy Idol had like 8 songs in rotation in 1.5 years. He was huge in 1984-85. - Blue Monday was a BIG HIT but only in 1989, following the release of their "Blue Monday 1988" version. - Wishing was actually one of the yearend top 40 songs of our #1 radio station. It was GREAT to see them play this live last month!!

Some shoutouts to other songs that were hits back home in 1983: - Private Idaho (The B-52s): Although this was originally released in 1980 in the US, it flopped (#74). Back home, this song was a BIG HIT. In fact, it was one of the yearend top 5 songs. And the video was super popular -including parodies in comedy shows. Those hairdos were unforgettable! The song is still their most played nowadays, even more than Love Shack. - Party Out of Bounds (The B-52s): The BIG success of Private Idaho led some radio stations to play a Party Mix version, which was actually a POOB/PI medley. So their top 5 yearend position was the combination of both songs. Both became 1980s classics back home. (I was astonished when I learned this didn't even make a dent in the Hot 100 back in 1980) - Rock Lobster (The B-52s): Following the success of Party Out of Bounds / Private Idaho, Rock Lobster was their next BIG hit. (I still have their 45 RPM :) ). Popular at 1980s parties and radios, although not as popular as their first two hits. I was also surprised that this had only made it to #56 -and in 1979! I love the more punk style of this one. - Legal Tender (The B-52s): The video was very popular as well, more than those for POOB and RL. This song wasn't as big a hit as the other 3, but was still a hit --and I really liked this more new wave style from them. At that point, I was already a BIG B-52s fan! And I LOVED it when they came back and got a big success in 1989. Although I still like these 4 songs better than their later singles. - Land of A Thousand Dances - Live (The J. Geils Band): This ended up in the yearend top 40 back home. A solid hit that still has good recurrent airplay. Again, surprised at how this was a flop in the US! I like it, it's fun and all, but it's not in my top 5 JGB songs. - I Do - Live (The J. Geils Band): This was yet another big hit of the band this year. And this IS among my top 5 JGB songs. Just a fun song with great retro but modern sound that was so IN in 1983. - It's Raining Again (Supertramp): Supertramp was hit or miss for me. A few songs I loved, and others I couldn't care less. This one was one of my favorites from them, though. I love the timeless melody, harmonies, instrumentation, and the overall music that brings several feelings (nostalgia, sadness, happiness, hope). Great memories from this year. Amongst my top 30 songs that are hits this year (although released in late 1982, it was more of a 1983 hit). - Lies (Thompson Twins): A big hit back home, with lots of recurrent airplay. It's my second favorite from them (after Hold Me Now), and a song with lots of great memories as well. Love the new wave sound, melody, especially that synth sound in the intro and bridge, plus the background percussion and drumbeats throughout song - Let's Go Dancing (Ooh, La, La, La) (Kool & The Gang): A hit back home and a song that I liked quite a bit, with that chill reggae vibe. My brother bought the 45 RPM, which had Hi De Hi Hi De Ho as a B-side --a song that I liked a lot as well even though it didn't receive airplay. It would've likely made the top of my personal chart as I was a real fan of that one as well! - Suddenly Last Summer (The Motels): A hit back home, following on the footsteps of the equally successful Only The Lonely. Good type of rock downtempo, melodic song, with a different kind of female vocals. Good memories of sunset or night drives :) OH, and: Some local AC stations had these on constant rotation over here. I wasn't really a Euro-synth pop stan, but they have 1983 written all over them. Don't know if these were played elsewhere? View AttachmentI LOVE Words Don't Come Easy! This was a mid-size hit back home, with good recurrent airplay in AC and soft pop stations.

Juanca Men Without Hats - "Antartica"before I reveal a another ten. I gotta say, I love discovering new 80's music in the 2010's. I consider myself one of the biggest 80's music freaks and yet here I am listening to this New Wave gem for the first time ever. Very different from "Safety Dance" but had that perfect New Wave vibe I was into back then. Let's just say that if I could rewrite history, this song would have gone to my #3 and end up in this set of songs. Download? yes yes yes! 30. David Bowie - Modern Love (HOT 100 #14) (U.K. #2) (DOC #3)The third single off 'Let's Dance" is the one that made the biggest impact on me. The buildup is perfect. From the guitar to the percussion, Synths ,spoken Bowie and finally Singing Bowie. Oh and lets not forget the Sax solo which takes center stage among the rest of the instruments. 29. Felony - The Fanatic (KIQQ #89 1983 YE list) (DOC #4)Felony was a New Wave band that dressed like The Knack, had a Val Kilmer lookalike for lead singer, was formed in Los Angeles. Naturally "The Fanatic" was one of the biggest New Wave Hits in the Southern California year end lists. The whole Valley Boy and Valley Girl fashion gave all these songs the right push into radio. Come to think of it, the song was featured in "Valley Girl". This was also one of Rick Carroll 's favorite songs of 1983. He was KROQ's program director and very influential on the music the station would play. The song has also been featured on numerous Compilation discs. Including 'Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s, Vol. 11" of which I own the whole collection. and The band also appeared on American Bandstand. Here is the original Music Video. 28. Def Leppard - Foolin' (HOT 100 #28) (DOC #1)Is 'Pyromania' my favorite Hard Rock album of all time? It could easily be. This was it's third single and another #1 song on my 1983 charts. ""Photograph" was still in my top 10 when this hit #1. The original Music Video is another Rock Classic from the classic MTV days. Fun Fact: I used to think Phil Collen would jump from this band to Genesis and become Phil Collins. [img src="http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif" src="http://images.proboards.com/tongue.gif" class="smile" alt=" "] 27. Cheap Trick - She's Tight (HOT 100 #45) (DOC #3)This was the third single off 'One On One'. It was released late September of 1982 and cruised on over to my 1983 charts. This is also one of my favorite Cheap Trick songs. This one flirts a bit with the New Wave synths of 80's Powerpop Rock. 26. Thomas Dolby - Europa And The Pirate Twins (HOT 100 #67) (DOC #4)This is without a doubt my favorite Thomas Dolby song. Thomas's songs were 100% New Wave. Synths, drum machines ,vocal effects, electrical storms, anything that produced shock. He was one of the original New Wave pioneers. Fun Fact: 'The Golden Age of Wireless' Features 6 singles , but only "....Science" went on to become a Hot 100 Top 10 hit. 25. Loverboy - Hot Girls In Love (HOT 100 #11) (DOC #5)24. Sammy Hagar - Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy (HOT 100 #13) (DOC #4)23. Rick Springfield - Affair Of The Heart (HOT 100 #9) (DOC #3)22. Wham! U.K. - Bad Boys (KIQQ #10 1983 YE list)(HOT 100 #60) (U.K. #2) (DOC #3)This was the first big Southern California chart topper for the band. I remember hearing this for the first time on KIQQ. This song appeared night after night on the KIQQ top 5 constantly competing with Duran Duran, Culture Club and Michael Jackson for the #1 song. It also went on to become KIQQ's #10 song of 1983 beating out all songs from Culture Club and Duran Duran. One of the few charts that didn't give in to its massive charisma was the HOT 100. This also remains as my favorite Wham song, not counting "Careless Whisper" of course. That's my king of Pop songs. 21. Madness - Our House (HOT 100 #7) (DOC #3)

"Maniac" actually drives me kinda nuts tbh.
However, "Flashdance" deserved top ten imo. Such an anthem! :'(

Thought for sure that “Stand Back” would’ve made the top ten. Underrated.

I didn't expect True to even make top 30 but I'm glad it landed as high as it did, nice track.

This is my favorite MJ song. Encapsulates so much that was irreplaceable about him. In comparison to some (but definitely not all) of his later recordings, of which there are so many incredible tracks that still stand as among the greatest ever, what endears this one to me is all the little differences that come about in his vocals and the production as it goes on.
