Not surprised this is out first after the other Steinman track left earlier than I expected. This is a very singular composition, any part of it is instantly recognizable to it and only it.

Wow. Really thought Bonnie had a chance at the top five. :'( At least my #1 will be revealed today; it may even surprise most of you!

The literal video version of Total Eclipse of the Heart is the definite version.

EBYT is either the most played 80s hit, or at least the one I hear most today. I'll always have extra appreciation in it due to it inspiring my favorite Bob's Burgers pun, Every Breath You Tikka Masala.

At work but couldn’t help doing a sneak peek lol YAS at Prince not in the top 3!!! And YAS at WBSS also not in the top 3. I love both artists but these songs overstayed their presence in such a solid year The top 3 is GREAT though Anyone would be a great winner and a solid decade #1 candidate

Whew. This is a great song, and one that stays great despite the current crop of weird white kids trying to claim it for themselves, but the top 2 is the correct top 2. Even if it's my #1 and my #10.

The Top 2
Here we are at the Top 2 and I gotta say, these is exactly the Top 2 I was expecting when I initially thought of doing this rankdown way back at the start of the year. I was a bit shocked at the popularity of "Africa" and was surprised to see it make it as far as it did. I suspect the recent cover of the song has increased its favourability.
There was a brief time when "Africa" was leading, then "Billie Jean" took the lead fairly early on and held it up until pretty much the end, when "Sweet Dreams" made a charge for the top.
With only 11 points separating the two I had to recount the lists 3 times to make sure it was correct. So here it is...
#2
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Eurythmics
Total Points: 2333
Billboard Hot 100: 1(1)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 10
From: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
After sitting at No. 2 behind "Every Breath You Take" for 4 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, this finally hit No. 1 the week ending September 3, 1983 on its 17th chart week.
Regarded as their breakthrough single, it was the fourth track released from the album of the same name.
In addition to the US, it hit No. 1 in Canada and France and charted within the Top 10 in over a dozen other countries.
Losing their No. 1's are Az Paynter , Alex , God , Glove Slap and Sambalada . This song received the most No. 1's of any on the rankdown.
Also handing out two perfect placements with this leaving the rankdown... Red - 5 Butterflies & Hurricanes - 25 Az Paynter - 1 craziaskowboi - 71 singingrulebritannia - 5 @walker9 - 2 gonecountry - 54 filthy - 37 Alex - 1 newpower - 2 Cody Wants Out... - 63 God - 1 House Lannister - 3 Doc Indie Party Rock - 25 Juanca - 4 mamooshka - 10 Mirago - 4 rowellfarm490 - 5 🇯🇲 dollybaby 🇯🇲 - 4 campbellssoup - 54 peacebone - 4 rgreen0625 - 8 Mic Technique - 6 Glove Slap - 1 Sambalada - 1 Zach - 4 @doinktheclown - 87 Unhinged - 8

#1
Billie Jean Michael Jackson
Total Points: 2344
Billboard Hot 100: 1(7)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 2
From: Thriller
Released January 2, 1983 as the second single from the biggest selling album of time Thriller, this was an absolutely massive single. Peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early March, it held the top for 7 weeks and propelled Thriller to the top of the Billboard 200 where it would remain for 37 non-consecutive weeks throughout 1983 and 1984.
Its music video was one of the first to receive heavy rotation for an African American artist on MTV and Jacksons performance of the song at the Motown 25 special (where he unveiled the Moonwalk for the first time) is considered one of the defining pop culture moments of all time.
Four of us grab a perfect placement and 14 more Top 10's fall with this leaving the rankdown...
Some of ya'll tried it but you just can't beat The King.

That's it folks!
Hope you enjoyed the rankdown!
Thanks for participating and for all the wonderful conversation that took place about this awesome year in music!
Moving along to the Billboard 1988 Rankdown next and submissions are due November 10th!
Oh and if you're in to that sort of thing, please think of me when voting for this years favorite Games host at the Pulse Member Awards! Shameful plug I know but fuck it...

SD is one of the first songs I ever really loved (remember hearing it when I was around 3 or so), and it has held up. Some try to criticize the repetitiveness, but that's a key factor that makes it endure and stand out. It manages to pastiche the concept of a pop song by essentially being just a chorus and b-chorus going back and forth, but also holds up totally on repeated listens which breaks it out from being seen as gimmicky or a parody, and as such, there is no other song truly like it. But Billie Jean is...well Billie Jean, and it looks right at the top, unlike on the actual year-end list where it had to settle for the runner-up spot. Thanks for hosting Unhinged!

Perfect top two - would’ve been more than happy to have seen either win.
Really enjoyed following along, thanks for hosting Unhinges! I’ll make sure to do the next one :)

Of course Billie Jean is great in all, but Sweet Dreams is a masterpiece and shouldve won. Im really starting to get sick of Billie Jean winning every rankdown its in. Once is good enough. Rant aside, thanks for hosting Unhinged this wonderful rankdown!

Rant aside, thanks for hosting Unhinged this wonderful rankdown! When I eventually get to the Top 100 of the 80’s (once we get through all of the Billboard 80’s lists and I use the Top 10’s from each rankdown to do a Top 100 of the 80’s) I sort of expect “When Doves Cry” to take that. Guess we shall see!

I also have fond memories of the first time I heard Sweet Dreams. It was the 1984 Grammys and Eurythmics performed. I remember next day running to the record store and getting Sweet Dreams, the album and Touch, the follow-up which by the time of the Grammys was already released. It’s hard to believe that they waited until the 4th single to release this, such an obvious hit. Thanks Unhinged for another fantastic rankdown.

My pick for #1 wavered a few times - but in the end I thought to myself, how can you top Billie Jean?
Thanks U̶n̶hinged!
