It's an interesting read but people trying to use their phones less doesn't spell doom for music-related apps like Spotify. Streaming is something you can do passively while being focused on another task. Unlike Facebook or Instagram, which try to take all of your attention.

What is to be the replacement for streaming if people lose interest in even doing that? Physical editions have become less popular. Digital downloading is becoming less popular. Streaming is what is popular right now. There are only so many ways to consume music.
While I do see many moving away from using Facebook and Twitter now or as much, many are using Instagram and Snapchat. I only use the first two and am considering getting away from FB because of other issues I mentioned in RT. I don't see any of these 4 major social media platforms going away in the next few years barring any major security issue or something else.

I think with less emphasis being put on music as a focus (the way it was with physical media), it will continue to move further into the background. It's already mostly background now seemingly and with so many people failing to even listen to a whole song, I almost wonder if pop music will just continue to sink and the songs continue to get even shorter.

Understandably, there is sometimes no need for a 10 minute remix of a song if the actual content of the song is only 2 to 2.5 minutes long but instrumental sections, beats, buildups/breakdowns can be the rest of the content of the production, but when done right, it can work. Attention spans definitely have gotten shorter. And there are even special radio edits that are just 1, 1.5, or just 2 minutes long with just the essential parts so some stations can play more songs, though you are playing more songs it's actually less of each song. There is even a radio station format that has begun to get more popular with this sort of programming. But that's really bad if one cannot focus or pay attention long enough for even 3 or 4 minutes.

It's the same as anything. How long has MySpace been dead or instant messaging services like AOL or MSN?
Before reading my ramble below, I'm curious what platforms other people use and what extrapolations people have from the wide array of platforms people use today.

I don't think they'll go away immediately, but likely the user base will age up. I remember being in college and everyone feeling like "old people" were infringing on our cool internet space to connect with our friends when people of all ages began joining en masse.
That said, personally I am over Facebook for anything other than event planning and my LARP communities (yes, I am an even bigger nerd IRL than I am for being on this board). I deactivated for a week and it felt amazing. Twitter, Linked In (lol), Instagram, and some others have fallen prey to my social media purge and the only reason I still have Tumblr is for porn.
Despite not being the target demographic, I love Snapchat a lot - it feels cozier b/c one has more control with whom one communicates. Slack is cool too and has a wide range of possibilities.

[/ramble] I was sort of happy when the original incarnation of MySpace went away because it had become such a mess towards the end. More things and features on it were broken then what was working. Although it was fully customizable when you can and I'll sorts of cool things to the profile pages, that often lead to it breaking and messing up more things. I feel that towards the end even the people behind the service we're not really caring anymore and they couldn't control all the spam that had run rampant. Remember when I would open up the friend request and they would be like 100 bot ones. MySpace even came back briefly a few years ago but it never ever took off in the way it had before. It has been a good decade since I have used AOL Instant Messenger or MSN messenger or even Yahoo! Messenger. I think I still used MSN messenger up until about 2009 or so. I think LinkedIn is still practical and serves a purpose. But I don't consider it a social media platform in the same way as the other services we have mentioned already. One can make posts and stuff and message other people, however, I think it's still more for job postings and networking and having a digital resume. I have one of those pages however, I only refer to it from time to time if I'm looking into a potential candidate we are hiring or interviewing or if I am actively searching for a job or something. My Twitter account was always associated with my music review blog it and even though I don't do the blog anymore, I've still kept that account. I do still share links to Spotify and iTunes for new music I am liking that I want to share with my followers from before. And also I can interact with some of the artists and musicians and stuff. Though I don't really do that that often. I don't check my Twitter every day. I check it a few times a week. Sometimes more often if something is happening. I keep Tumblr mostly for the porn too and for the GIFs. π Mostly for the GIFs. But also I enjoy looking at people's creative and artistic photography and art that they post on there. I have an Instagram but I don't post pictures on there anymore. It's mostly to follow celebrities. Many social media stars are actually suggesting that YouTube could be the next big social media platform because so many people spend time on it and build communities that way however, it's not the same as all the other ones because you don't really have a traditional messaging or communication system the way you have on Facebook or Twitter. However, I could see some of those features being integrated in at a later time to create those types of communities and stuff. I still use Facebook, however I am questioning whether I would like to continue to use it in the future. I use it to follow some of my friends from school and work and family and also some folks I have interacted with online but I don't know personally but we still keep in touch that way. I do however have a WhatsApp group for some of my cousins and other family members. Many of them have Facebook but have stopped actually using it because they don't like sharing stuff in public.
