Mac Miller Charts Three Songs on Billboard Hot 100, Led by 'Self Care' in Top 40
News
By Xander Zellner | September 18, 2018 10:42 AM EDT
"Hurt Feelings" & "Come Back to Earth" also debut.
Following the first full tracking week after Mac Miller's death on Friday, Sept. 7, the late hip-hop star debuts three songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Sept. 22).
All three entries are from his most recent album, Swimming, which vaults from No. 71 to No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart (where it debuted and peaked at No. 3 in August).
"Self Care" debuts at No. 33 on the Hot 100, becoming Miller's highest-charting hit as a lead artist and second-highest entry overall. Ariana Grande's "The Way," featuring Miller, reached No. 9 in 2013.
"Care" starts with 18.4 million U.S. streams (up 625 percent week-over-week, according to Nielsen Music) and sold 8,000 downloads (up 3,660 percent), in the tracking week ending Sept. 13, as the track bows at No. 15 on the Streaming Songs chart and No. 32 on Digital Song Sales.
Plus, Miller's "Hurt Feelings" and "Come Back to Earth" enter the Hot 100 at Nos. 70 and 91, respectively. "Feelings" gained by 596 percent to 11.2 million U.S. streams, while "Earth" is up 724 percent to 8.6 million.
All three tracks concurrently debut on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, at Nos. 18 (a new career best), 29 and 41, respectively, while two additional songs, "2009" and "Ladders," both also from Swimming, begin at Nos. 49 and 50, respectively.
As previously reported, seven Miller titles appear on the Billboard 200. Below Swimming at No. 6 are Best Day Ever (a debut at No. 26); GO:OD AM (No. 32, re-entry); Blue Slide Park (No. 49, re-entry); The Divine Feminine (No. 50, re-entry); Watching Movies With the Sound Off (No. 59, re-entry); and, Macadelic (No. 106, re-entry).

Hot 100 Chart Moves: Machine Gun Kelly's Eminem Diss Track 'Rap Devil' Debuts
News
By Xander Zellner and Gary Trust | September 18, 2018 11:51 AM EDT Machine Gun Kelly
At No. 13, MGK earns his second-highest-charting Hot 100 hit. Plus, 5SOS and Imagine Dragons approach the top 10 and Marshmello and Bastille hit the top 40.
Machine Gun Kelly makes his 2018 Billboard Hot 100 debut as his fiery diss track "Rap Devil," directed towards Eminem, opens at No. 13 (on the chart dated Sept. 22).
"Rap Devil" logged 23.5 million U.S. streams and sold 36,000 downloads in the week ending Sept. 13, according to Nielsen Music, following its Sept. 8 release. The track concurrently opens at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, marking MGK's first leader on the list, and No. 13 on Streaming Songs.
The track is MGK's first solo-billed Hot 100 entry and fifth overall. He makes his highest debut with the song, which launches as his second-highest-charting Hot 100 hit, after his Camila Cabello collaboration "Bad Things," which rose to No. 4 in 2017.
MGK's other Hot 100 entries: "Wild Boy," featuring Waka Flocka Flame (No. 98 peak in January 2012); "At My Best," featuring Hailee Steinfeld (No. 60, May 2017); and "Home," with X Ambassadors and Bebe Rexha (No. 90, December 2017).
Notably, Eminem released his response track to "Rap Devil," "Killshot," Friday, Sept. 14.
As previously reported, Drake makes history atop the Sept. 22-dated Hot 100, leading for a 10th week with "In My Feelings." As he reigned earlier this year for 11 weeks with "God's Plan" and for eight frames with "Nice for What," Drake's 29 weeks at No. 1 are the most for any artist in a year in the Hot 100's history, passing Usher's 28 weeks on top in 2004.
Who else makes notable (if not quite that historic) Hot 100 chart moves this week?
"Youngblood," 5 Seconds of Summer The track moves to the doorstep of the Hot 100's top 10, up from No. 13 to No. 11 (a new career-best rank for the band). The song claims the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award for a second consecutive week, as it rises 8-7 on the Radio Songs chart, up 14 percent to 71.8 million airplay audience impressions in the week ending Sept. 16.
"Youngblood" also bumps 6-5 on the Pop Songs airplay chart, where it becomes 5SOS' first top five hit.
"Natural," Imagine Dragons Also making a push for the Hot 100's top 10, "Natural" lifts 20-15. The track, the band's eighth top 15 Hot 100 hit, ascends 4-2 on Digital Song Sales (923,000, down 12 percent), 23-18 on Radio Songs (46.9 million, up 16 percent) and 48-33 on Streaming Songs (12.8 million, up 4 percent).
"Natural" leads the Hot Rock Songs chart for a fifth week and the Alternative Songs airplay chart for a third frame.
"Happier," Marshmello & Bastille The song enters the Hot 100's top 40, climbing 46-35 and gaining in all metrics. It zooms 42-17 on Digital Song Sales (11,000, up 44 percent) and debuts at No. 38 on Streaming Songs (11.5 million, up 10 percent) and No. 50 on Radio Songs (21.3 million, up 30 percent).
Marshmello adds his fifth top 40 Hot 100 hit (all since November 2017), while Bastille notches its second and first in nearly five years; the band broke through with "Pompeii," which hit No. 5 in March 2014.

I noticed that Lauren Daigle's "You Say" was the "DG" for the week but dropped a decent amount on the digital charts 11-20. Was that a mistake?? Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" went up 19 to 12. I would think that would have been more of a gain than a song supposedly dropping.

I would think that would have been more of a gain than a song supposedly dropping. Regarding You Say, since Lauren Daigle's was released last week, when somebody bought the song, but then returns the song to complete the album, the sales of the song gets subtracted from the total for Digital Song Sales, but it still counts toward the Digital Gainer award and Hot 100 as if song purchase had stayed as such, the way I understand it. Such rules result in this type of contradictory behavior for songs in different charts but related charts.

It was reasonable, in a general sense, to think a new 21P song would make a solid impact. They had three top 5 hits in a row.

I think they would do better if they send one of the singles to pop radio.

Luke Bryan Extends Trend Of Multiweek Country Airplay No. 1s; Dylan Scott Completes Record Trip To No. 2
9/18/2018 by Jim AskerLuke Bryan notches his 12th multiweek No. 1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart as "Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset" (Capitol Nashville) spends a second frame at the summit (on the list dated Sept. 22). The track reigns with 42.6 million audience impressions, down 3 percent, in the week ending Sept. 16, according to Nielsen Music. "Sunrise," Bryan's 20th total Country Airplay leader, is his second multiweek No. 1 in 2018 following "Most People Are Good," which led for three weeks beginning March 31. Bryan's longest-leading No. 1 is "Play It Again" (four frames, 2014). "Sunrise" marks the 11th multiweek Country Airplay No. 1 of 2018 -- clearly a rising trend in recent years. Nine songs crowned the chart for over one week in the same time frame in 2017, after five did so in the same span in 2016. "I am in favor of more multiweek No. 1s and think it's baloney to have 45 or so No. 1s in a year," says Cumulus vp country Charlie Cook. (The most No. 1s in a year since Country Airplay began in 1990? Forty, in 2016. The number fell to 33 in 2017, while 26 songs have hit No. 1 so far this year. Notably, those totals are up significantly from 1998, 1999 and 2003, the years with the fewest annual leaders: 18 apiece.) Luke Bryan and Cole Swindell perform at the opening of his "Luke's 32 Bridge Food + Drink" on Sept. 10, 2018 in Nashville, Tenn. Read More Luke Bryan Draws 30,000 to Free Show Celebrating New Nashville Restaurant Luke's 32 Bridge Food + Drink "We like it when strong songs are rewarded with staying at the top of the chart for extra weeks," says Cook. "We keep strong-testing songs in power rotation long after they've dropped off the chart." One example of a track that Cook feels was No. 1 on Country Airplay for less time than it may have deserved is Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road," which led for three weeks in May 2017. As it topped Country Streaming Songs for 34 weeks and Country Digital Song Sales for 31, "that song should have stayed at No. 1 [on Country Airplay] for six weeks," he says. On the Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, "Body" ruled for 34 weeks, the second-longest run in the chart's 59-year history; Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" (Warner Bros./Big Machine Label Group) passed "Body" and on the Sept. 22 chart dominates for a 42nd week (after leading Country Airplay for a week). "I certainly hope this is a trend," says Entercom Communications KILT Houston pd Bruce Logan of the rising tide of multiweek No. 1s. "Real hits are songs that connect with the audience, sell, stream, research and move on to solid recurrent airplay. As a format, for us to be healthy, we have to make real hits, not the conveyer belt that became 'push week' [by labels to send a song to No. 1] with the minute the push is over. Anything you have to push for isn't a hit."
HOOKED ON 'HOOKED': Dylan Scott's "Hooked" (Curb) ascends 4-2 in its 55th chart week on Country Airplay, up 12 percent to 40.1 million impressions. The track completes the longest climb to the top two, a mark previously held by William Michael Morgan's "I Met a Girl," which peaked at No. 2 in its 52nd week (Oct. 15, 2016).
"Hooked" also jumps to the Hot Country Songs top 10, romping 11-6. In addition to its airplay gain, it surges by 27 percent to 4.1 million U.S. streams. Scott banks his second Hot Country Songs top 10 following "My Girl," which peaked at No. 3 (and topped Country Airplay) in summer 2017.
CARRIE ON: Carrie Underwood's "Love Wins" (Capitol Nashville) debuts at No. 34 on Country Airplay (3.8 million). The song is the second single from her album Cry Pretty, released Sept. 14. The title track became her 27th top 10 when it reached No. 9 on the chart dated Sept. 1.

Kanye West & Lil Pump's 'I Love It' Hits No. 1 On Streaming Songs Chart, Debuts in Hot 100's Top 10
9/18/2018 by Kevin Rutherford
The song is West’s second No. 1 debut on the chart this year, following 'All Mine.'
For the second time in 2018, Kanye West debuts atop Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart – and this time, he brings Lil Pump along.
“I Love It,” West’s new collaboration with Lil Pump, debuts at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart dated Sept. 22. The song gathered 46.6 million streams in the week ending Sept. 13, according to Nielsen Music.
The track is West’s second No. 1 on the chart, following the No. 1 debut of “All Mine” in June 2018. “Mine” was one of seven songs from Ye, West’s Billboard 200-topping album that was released in June. "Love" is not part of Ye and is currently a standalone single.
Meanwhile, the song is Lil Pump’s first to rule the list; “Gucci Gang,” his first track to make the Streaming Songs chart, peaked at No. 2 last November.
The track’s surge to No. 1 is thanks in part to its viral music video, released Sept. 7. Indeed, of the song’s 46.6 million streams, 54 percent are from video clicks. The video sparked its own #ILoveItChallenge, which also drew viewers to the song and clip toward the end of the tracking week. The challenge depicts participants dancing along to the song in blocky costumes or clothes that resemble those worn by the rappers in the clip.
That said, “I Love It” still succeeds on on-demand audio services, ruling the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart with 21.3 million streams from on-demand audio players.
Coupled with 17,000 first-week sales and some early airplay for the song, “I Love It” debuts at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s West’s highest debut since “Heartless” in November 2008 (No. 4) and is his 17th top 10 total, and it’s Lil Pump’s first top 10 debut.

Breaking Benjamin Nets Sixth No. 1 On Mainstream Rock Songs Chart With 'Torn in Two'
9/18/2018 by Kevin Rutherford
Chris Yankton Breaking Benjamin The song is the first leader from the band's album 'Ember.'
Breaking Benjamin returns to No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart, ruling the Sept. 22-dated list with "Torn in Two."
The song, the second single from the band's former Top Rock Albums leader Ember, rises 2-1 to become Breaking Benjamin's sixth Mainstream Rock Songs No. 1.
It's also the band's fourth leader on the list in just over three years, continuing a hot streak that began with "Failure" (for nine weeks, beginning May 23, 2015) and continued with "Angels Fall" (four weeks, Nov. 7, 2015) and "Never Again" (two weeks, April 1, 2017).
Ember's previous single, "Red Cold River," peaked at No. 2 in March, blocked by the five-week reign of Three Days Grace's "The Mountain." This time, Breaking Benjamin takes over the top spot from Three Days Grace, whose "Infra-Red" falls to No. 2 after becoming the band's record-breaking 14th No. 1.
On the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart, "Torn" rises 20-17, a new peak, up 14 percent to 4.4 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music.
Ember, Breaking Benjamin's sixth studio album, debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts dated April 28 with 88,000 equivalent album units earned.

I think they would do better if they send one of the singes to pop radio. Based on how the era was introduced and executed thus far, it's pretty evident to me that they weren't looking to extend their pop streak, at least not right out of the gate. Not necessarily a bad move, at least not from an artistic standpoint. Whether or not they made it a point to not have pop hits on this album is still uncertain and debatable, but they certainly don't seem to be catering to the format. "My Blood", however, is pretty poppy, relatively speaking, so maybe it'll do something if pushed.

Interesting that MGK's diss track was #1 in sales. Most songs of this nature I would think would do well in streaming (people being curious checking out the track) but not necessarily sales. Unless people streamed it once and liked it enough to purchase it. MGK though doesn't seem like a strong sales artist.
Also, the 1967 Rolling Stones song is #48 in sales (was recently in an Acura commercial).

The Rolling Stones' 'She's a Rainbow' & Disturbed's 'The Sound of Silence' Gain on Rock Charts
News
By Kevin Rutherford | September 20, 2018 5:15 PM EDT The Rolling Stones
"Rainbow" rises aided by an Acura synch, while "Silence" makes post-9/11 increases.
Two older tracks make Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart dated Sept. 22: one a hit from more than 50 years ago and the other a well-known cover of an iconic '60s classic.
The Rolling Stones' "She's a Rainbow" makes its maiden appearance on the chart, debuting at No. 24 with sales and streaming gains sparked by the song's synch in an Acura car commercial. (On Hot Rock Songs, as with the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, older songs are able to chart if ranking in the top half and backed by a meaningful reason for renewed gains).
In the case of "Rainbow," the Acura ad in which it's featured helped the song to boosts of 274 percent in sales (to 6,000) and 138 percent in streams (to 366,000) in the week ending Sept. 13, according to Nielsen Music.
"Rainbow" also begins at No. 7 on Rock Digital Song Sales, becoming the Stones' first top 10 on the chart, which began in 2010. On the all-format Digital Song Sales chart (which dates to 2004), it's the band's first entry, starting at No. 48.
Originally released from the Stones' 1967 album Their Satanic Majesties, "Rainbow" reached No. 25 on the Hot 100 in January 1968.
Meanwhile, Disturbed's "The Sound of Silence" makes yet another return to Hot Rock Songs, re-entering at No. 9 for its 54th total week on the tally since its September 2015 debut; it peaked at No. 3 in April 2016.
This time, the song re-enters thanks to the recirculation of a 9/11 tribute video (originally uploaded in 2016) featuring the song. On Sept. 11, the video made the rounds on social media, and "Silence" accumulated 4 million streams (up 16 percent) and sold 7,000 downloads (up 122 percent) in the week ending Sept. 13. The latter sum sends the song back to No. 1 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart, extending its record reign to 88 weeks at the summit.
Simon & Garfunkel's original "The Sound of Silence" topped the Hot 100 for two weeks in January 1966. Disturbed's slowed-down, haunting cover, first released in 2015, led the Mainstream Rock Songs chart for seven weeks beginning in March 2016 and became the band's top-charting song on the Hot 100, reaching No. 42 that April.
It last returned to Hot Rock Songs in February 2018, with streaming and sales gains attributed to its usage in a figure skating routine at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
