Why would you exclude them? It doesn't make any sense to do so since black women are more likely to be in the realm of hip-hop since it is a black dominated genre. Seriously? Are you slow... 'R&B' is also a "Black-dominated" genre. This decade thus far, Black R&B artists (particularly Female artists and those of whom are, I repeat, "non Hip-Hop acts") have had an extremely difficult time crossing over onto the upper realms of the Hot 100 compared to those whose careers peaked in the 2000's. R&B-dominant Female artists/singers such as Ashanti, Keyshia Cole, Monica, Brandy, Kelis, Tamia, Mary J Blige, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Tweet, Amerie, Ciara etc. all scored top ten hits on the Hot 100 as lead artists during the 2000's, some of whom even scored number-one hits, alongside Hip-Hop dominant Female artists such as Eve, Missy Elliot, Lil' Kim etc. So, for Ella Mai to be only the SECOND Black Female artist/singer after Rihanna in the 2010's thus far to achieve two top ten singles on the Hot 100 in a calendar year, excluding Hip-Hop acts - Nicki Minaj/Cardi B, is CERTAINLY worth noting. Nicki Minaj and Cardi B are rappers. If Beyoncé or Rihanna released a full-blown rap song that reached the top ten of the Hot 100, it wouldn't suddenly make either of them the 'third' Black Female rapper to achieve such this decade as they're singers by trade, first and foremost. Also, this is why I highlighted Ella Mai being the first R&B artist since Alicia Keys circa. 2007 with 'No One' to have a number one song on Adult-R&B radio (UAC) also peak within the top ten/five on the Hot 100. It's an extremely rare feat. in today's industry. Calling me slow was extremely uncalled for. You should have started off your post by saying you were only going to do r&b black women because you made it seem like Ella was only the second black woman to do this great feat... if you exclude these other black females that also achieved it. In fact, your very first paragraph actually states Ella is the second black female artist "overall" to do it. Pardon me, maybe I'm "slow," but overall is an all inclusive term and does not at all mean "excluding this specific set." No need to be rude, I just don't think you were clear in your original post. In fact, had you initially started you meant r&b black women only from the get-go there would have been no reason at all to state "excluding hip-hop females" in your post, and this all would have been avoided. Especially calling me slow. What the hell, dude? Don't call others mentally belittling names because your post wasn't clear enough. |

Just looking at the Hot R&B / Hip-Hop Songs chart is crazy these years. With streaming's dominance and Hip-Hop's stranglehold on that metric, there is next to nothing except HH based (primarily male) rap cuts. This is America's premier R&B charts and it showcases almost no diversity. I recall well when the charts had hard hitting rap acts side by side with the Commodores, Luther Vandrosses, Steveie Wonders or even SWVs of the day. No more. R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (previously known as Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay) is a chart published by Billboard magazine that ranks the top R&B and hip hop songs in the United States, based on audience impressions from a panel of radio stations monitored by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. It was also used in sister publication R&R, which listed the chart as Urban National Airplay. The chart is not the R&B/hip-hop subset of the Hot 100 Airplay chart, but rather uses a separate panel of R&B stations in urban and urban adult contemporary markets. It was the primary airplay component chart of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart until the issue dated October 20, 2012, when Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs was revamped to include digital sales, streaming, and airplay from all radio formats. The Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart encompasses two separate airplay charts, both of which are based on radio spins rather than audience impressions: Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and Adult R&B Airplay, which measure airplay on urban contemporary and urban adult contemporary stations respectively. I get your point, but if an artist dies, doesn't their future royalties go to their family (or whoever they put in their will)? So hypothetically if this song exists and became a massive hit, their parents (as well as their labels) might get a lot of money from it? For example, I think Marvin Gaye's relatives get money from Blurred Lines (and they almost could have got money from Thinking Out Loud as well). |
