'A Star Is Born' Set for Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200, Quavo Aiming for No. 2
10/16/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Plus: Ella Mai’s self-titled full-length debut set for top 10 debut.
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack will likely snare a second week atop the Billboard 200 chart, according to industry forecasters. Meanwhile, Quavo’s debut solo set, Quavo Huncho, could zoom to No. 2 on the tally.
Prognosticators suggest A Star Is Born may earn around 125,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 18. That should be enough to keep the set at No. 1, following its chart-topping debut on the Oct. 20-dated list with 231,000 units earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music.
If A Star Is Born -- Gaga’s fifth No. 1 album -- holds at No. 1, it will give Lady Gaga her first chart-topper with more than one week at No. 1 since her first leader, Born This Way, topped the tally for two weeks in 2011.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Oct. 27-dated Billboard 200 chart (where A Star is Born may hold at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Oct. 21.
Meanwhile, Quavo’s debut solo album Quavo Huncho, could vault from No. 66 to possibly No. 2 after its first full chart tracking week. Sources estimate the Migos member’s album could earn around 100,000 units in the week ending Oct. 18.
Quavo Huncho bowed on the Oct. 20-dated chart at No. 66 with 11,000 units earned in the week ending Oct. 11 -- and only from a few hours of activity on Oct. 11. The set was released at 9 pm ET on Oct. 11 -- three hours before Nielsen Music’s tracking week ended. (Most albums are released at 12 am ET each Friday. Nielsen Music’s sales and streaming tracking week runs from Friday to Thursday.)
Elsewhere on next week’s Billboard 200, watch for rising star Ella Mai to debut in the top 10 with her debut full-length self-titled album. It may arrive with around 55,000 units earned. The set contains her breakthrough smash single “Boo’d Up” (which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100) and her new hit “Trip” (which rises 20-16 on the most recently published Hot 100, dated Oct. 20).

'A Star Is Born' Soundtrack Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart
10/21/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Plus: Quavo’s “Quavo Huncho” bolts 66-2 after first full tracking week & Ella Mai’s self-titled album bows at No. 5.
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the set earned 143,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 18, according to Nielsen Music (down 38 percent compared to its opening frame a week ago). Of the latest tracking week’s unit sum, 86,000 were in album sales -- down 47 percent.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 27-dated chart -- where A Star is Born holds at No. 1 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
A Star Is Born marks Gaga’s second album to spend more than one week at No. 1, following her first leader, 2011’s Born This Way, which spent two weeks atop the tally. Her other three chart-toppers all spent one week in the penthouse.
In the runner-up slot on the new Billboard 200, Quavo’s Quavo Huncho zooms from No. 66 to No. 2, following its first full tracking week of activity. The Migos member’s debut solo album earned 99,000 units in the frame ending Oct. 18, with 6,000 of that sum coming from album sales. A week ago, the album premiered from a partial day of activity, as the album was released on Thursday, Oct. 11 (the final day of the previous chart week’s tracking week), entering with 11,000 units.
Lil Wayne’s former No. 1, Tha Carter V, is steady at No. 3 with 85,000 units (down 37 percent), while Lil Baby and Gunna’s Drip Harder is also a non-mover, holding at No. 4 with 71,000 units (down 46 percent).
Rising R&B star Ella Mai lands the only bow in the top 10, as her self-titled full-length debut studio album enters at No. 5 (69,000 units; of which 17,000 were in album sales). Earlier in 2018, her most recent EP, Ready, peaked at No. 29 (July 21-dated chart). Both Ready and her self-titled album feature her breakthrough hit single “Boo’d Up,” which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Drake’s Scorpion climbs 8-6 with 55,000 units (up 3 percent), twenty one pilots’ Trench dips 2-7 in its second week with 49,000 units (down 72 percent) and Travis Scott’s Astroworld rises 9-8 with 47,000 units (down 3 percent).

Rounding out the top 10: Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys ascends 10-9 with 44,000 units (down less than 1 percent) and Eminem’s Kamikaze moves 11-10 with 35,000 units (down 15 percent).
Notably, Universal Music Group (UMG) distributes eight of the top 10 (for the second time in 2018) and the entire top six (for the first time since 2015).
UMG lays claim to everything in the top 10 except for twenty one pilots’ Trench at No. 6 (released through Fueled by Ramen/Elektra Music Group, distributed by Warner Music’s WEA Distribution) and Travis Scott’s Astroworld at No. 8 (Cactus Jack/Grand Hustle/Epic, distributed by Sony Music).
Earlier in 2018, UMG nabbed nine of the top 10 (on the Sept. 29-dated list). The last time the company held the entire top six was back on the Nov. 28, 2015 tally. That week, Chris Stapleton was No. 1 with Traveller (on Mercury Nashville Records), while Nos. 2-5 were Eric Church’s Mr. Misunderstood (EMI Nashville), Ellie Goulding’s Delirium (Cherrytree/Interscope Records), The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness (Republic Records) and Tim McGraw’s Damn Country Music (McGraw/Big Machine Records).

Brilliant pure sales for ASIB! It'll easily be number one next week too (if a surprise release doesn't appear)

And based on the top 10 being mostly streaming albums, it is the only CD people are buying this week (for the most part)

I'm really happy for Gaga, ASIB seems like it's here to stay for a while and she seems to have made a full-on comeback! It's kind of funny, the Judy Garland version of the movie definitely did the same for her career. If done right, the story definitely seems to have the golden touch!

Only older people are seeing a Star Is Born? Most of Gaga's fans are younger.

It appears The Greatest Showman OST finally didn't sell 10k pure sales this week.

Only older people are seeing a Star Is Born? Most of Gaga's fans are younger. According to Box Office Mojo, 86% of the opening weekend audience was 25 or over, so yeah, that is very heavily older-skewing. The story has been around for awhile, so it should be very familiar to much older audiences, plus it's not exactly a teen flick, its themes are somewhat more mature. I don't know this for sure, but I would guess most of her fans are actually around 25 or older anyway, since at the height of her fame, 2008-2011, that would place them at their mid-teens then.

No one is probably surprised that people in their 30s go to see the movie, I mean she's 32 herself, Bradley Cooper is over 40 and and most of Gaga fans are 25+ easily.

Drake's If You're Reading This It's too Late re-enters at #197. 189 weeks charting. It's gonna be limping to the finish line of 200 weeks. > I cannot at Hamilton up to #29, in its 160th week. It's so gonna debut huge on the next All-Time Billboard 200.

Wait. 25 is considered old? An "older-skewing" movie is Book Club, not A Star Is Born.

Only older people are seeing a Star Is Born? Most of Gaga's fans are younger. Most of the people in the theatre when I saw it on Saturday were 50+ I've seen it twice now and probably 90% of the audience in those showings were my age (35-ish)

Wait. 25 is considered old? An "older-skewing" movie is Book Club, not A Star Is Born. To me 25 doesn't seem old either, but surprisingly for movie-going audiences it sort of is (I guess a lot of teens go to movies because they can't go to the bars/clubs yet), and that's the benchmark age box office mojo usually uses when they give audience breakdowns. I can tell you from a lot of experience reading their articles, 86% over 25 is a very high percentage compared to all other films, but I would imagine a big chunk of that audience is much older than 25 as well, such as 40+.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Eric Clapton's 'Happy Xmas' Debuts, Leads Holiday Albums Chart 10/26/2018 by Keith Caulfield
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Oct. 27), the A Star Is Born soundtrack tallied a second week at No. 1, earning 143,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 18 (down 38 percent from its bow of 231,000 units), according to Nielsen Music. Of its second-week sum, 86,000 were in album sales (down 47 percent).
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— Eric Clapton, Happy Xmas – No. 168 — The rock legend is getting the Christmas season started early, as his first holiday effort, Happy Xmas, debuts at No. 168. The set earned 6,000 units, of which nearly all of that sum was in album sales. The title also debuts at No. 1 on the Holiday Albums chart, which ranks the most popular seasonal efforts of the week. The Holiday Albums list is published weekly from mid-October through early January each season.
— Usher & Zaytoven, “A” – No. 31 — Usher’s surprise album, a collaboration with Zaytoven, debuts at No. 31 with 15,000 units (4,000 from album sales). The set was announced on Oct. 11, and released the following day. It marks Usher’s 11th charting album, and Zaytoven’s third. Usher was last on the tally with Hard II Love (No. 5 in 2015) and Zaytoven notched a pair of debuts earlier in 2018 (Trapholizay, No. 78 and Let the Trap Say Amen, No. 49).
— Cher, Dancing Queen – No. 32 — Cher’s all-ABBA covers album Dancing Queen hops back into the top 40 (rising 43-32) with 15,000 units (up 5 percent), following the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again on digital home video on Oct. 9. Cher has a supporting role in the ABBA-inspired film, and performs two songs in the film. The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again soundtrack also jumps up the list, climbing 154-135 with 6,000 units (up 3 percent). Expect further gains following the movie’s DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release on Oct. 23.
— Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Look Now – No. 46 — Costello claims his 32nd charting effort with the arrival of Look Now (13,000 units, nearly all from album sales). He made his Billboard 200 chart debut on Dec. 3, 1977 with My Aim Is True, which peaked at No. 32 on the March 18, 1978-dated list.
— System of a Down, Toxicity – No. 179 — The album returns to the list for the first time since 2015, following its vinyl reissue on Oct. 12. The album re-enters with 5,000 units earned (up 83 percent), with nearly 3,000 of that sum in album sales (up 428 percent). The bulk of its sales came from the vinyl LP set (2,000 copies sold), which debuts at No. 4 on the Vinyl Albums chart. Two more System of a Down sets hit the Vinyl Albums chart: the band’s self-titled album bows at No. 10 (1,000 sold) while Mezmerize starts at No. 16 (1,000).
