"People Miss Planes" gets grounded here and misses its flight to the top 10. This heartfelt piano ballad album cut from Everything's Gonna Be Alright about a couple on the verge of separation where the woman has a change of heart at the last minute in the airport. It's always been one of my favorite standouts on the record, and it made The Deana Carter Collection despite never being a single. austin went from losing his second-to-last with the prior reveal to losing his #2 in this one, and three others (myself included) see the loss of a top 10. Most others placed it in the teens, but it was ultimately drug down by a quartet of ranks in the 20s. "Then she heard a voice calling Boarding flight 41 When another voice inside her said You don't have to get on"

I've never been able to get into "Angel Without A Prayer" so I'm surprised it made it this far.
Glad to see "People Miss Planes" do well, wish it could have sneaked into the Top 10 though

“Angel Without a Prayer” was another discovery for me and I absolutely loved it. I really would’ve liked to hear a more updated version of this and wish Deana could’ve recorded this again for her sophomore album. I wonder how this would’ve fared as a lead or second single.
I likely underranked “People Miss Planes” and I know that I initially had it much higher on my list, however after a few listens I felt myself becoming somewhat disconnected from it. After listening to it again just now I think I would’ve ended up placing it inside the top 20 so I’m happy to see it make it this far.

People Miss Planes is sooooo good. I always thought it should have been the lead single to her second album, with Angels Working Overtime the second single. I think she would have had some more success.

I personally think "Michelangelo Sky" would've been the best lead but "People Miss Planes" also could've been a single!
I've been trying to find a copy of the UK printing of "Did I Shave My Legs For This" for years but I've had no luck. :(

"In a Heartbeat" goes into cardiac arrest shy of the top 10, leaving Deana with only one song still in from The Story of My Life. One of her most tender moments on record, her wistful vocal delivery of this one coupled with her guitar playing (love the build to the climactic electric solo after the song starts off so delicate) has always made this a standout from its parent record. Its rather low budget music video was directed by Chris Hicky, who Deana used to date and had a son with during their relationship. LBTrocks loses his #2 with this reveal, and two other top 10s go right along with it. However, all but two ranked this one in their top 20s, with several others coming close to putting it in their top 10. "I can't ignore the voices in my head The things we never said hunting me down I feel like I've found myself in pieces on the floor More broken than before I let you down"

Coming up short of the top 10 by only six points, "You and Tequila" becomes our final loss this side of the final stretch. This song was just an obscure album cut on Deana's third effort, I'm Just a Girl, but was elevated to the mainstream spotlight several years down the road when Kenny Chesney famously covered it and turned it into a smash hit. While his version doesn't hold a candle to the original imo, it was nice to see such a stellar track penned by the team of Deana and Matraca Berg (the esteemed songwriter behind her first two #1 hits at country radio) get its just due somehow. A breezy, quiet number, it finds Deana comparing the vice of men to that of tequila. This one landing on the outside looking in may come as a disappointment to the six posters who ranked it in their personal top 10s, though it wasn't without its low ranks as two did drop it below their top 20s. "Baby, here I am again Kicking dust in the canyon wind Waiting for that sun to go down Made it up Mulholland Drive Hell bent on getting high High above the lights of town"

Sorry for the delay y'all, but I'm back for more reveals! We kick off the top 10 here with a tie. This one loses the tie-breaker due to the highest rank being a #6, while the song that slid just ahead to number 9 has a pair of top 5 ranks. Unfortunately, with the loss of "One Day at a Time," we bid farewell to Deana's The Story of My Life album. The final charting single of her career (though it flopped and barely did anything), this fun little ode to life and its unpredictability featuring a catchy chorus peppered with famous name drops racked up top 10 placements from half of the participants, but it also finally clears bboat11's bottom 5 with its only sub-20 rank. "She said, 'Thelma and Louise, you got nothin' on me' And you call, tell ole James Dean to get in line Thanks to Elvis and Kurt Cobain, the world will never be the same You've got to make history one day at a time"

And the song that broke the tie-breaker due to a pair of top 5s comes at the very first expense of Deana's monumental debut record, in the form of its title track. "Did I Shave My Legs for This?" was the fifth and final single from the era and despite missing the top 20 on the charts following four smashes, it did get more attention than that peak may suggest. Still, it is the first loss from the record which saw all of its songs reach the top 10 in this rankdown. Lyrically it's a redneck anthem that finds Deana lamenting that she lives in a trailer and has to play housewife to a man who can't be bothered to notice she got all done up for him. It got the attentions of George Strait Junkie and SHOOTER who slotted it inside their top 5s, but received less fanfare from LBTrocks who put it below the top 20 on his own list. "Now when we first met you promised you'd get A house on a hill with a pool Well this trailer stays wet and were swimmin' in debt And you want me to go back to school"

The lead-off single to Deana's sophomore record, Everything's Gonna Be Alright, snuck past our last two with just a 1-point lead to come in at number 8. "Absence of the Heart" is a very delicate ballad detailing the sad reality that the narrator is just going through the motions with her significant other and that the love has been lost between them. It made the top 20 on the country charts, which was an underwhelming finish compared to the success of her first string of hits off her debut. It was able to score a #2 rank from SHOOTER who suffers back-to-back blows to his top 5, and a handful of other top 10s. It received only one sub-20 rank, though it was not quite in someguy's bottom 5, either. Ultimately this one received a lot of ranks near the middle, which steered it clear from reaching the top 5 in the rankdown. "We live together separately We don't want to fall apart But every time we kiss there's an emptiness An absence of the heart"

"One Day At A Time" isn't bad at all, and I am a little shocked to be reminded that I put it that low on my list... Still a pretty good song. "Did I Shave My Legs For This" is iconic! I am not surprised to see it be the first song from her debut to leave, as to me it feels a tad novelty-ish, which gives it a little less replay value. This feels like a good time for it to leave. Glad it won the tie to beat ODAAT at least.
"Absence of the Heart", on the other hand, was done dirty... This song is so soft and airy, yet understatedly catchy! The lyrics are well crafted from beginning to end; there is some masterful phrasing in the description of empty love being like an absence of the heart... Not to mention it is one of Deana's best vocal performances

We have yet another tie, this time for the final two songs to miss out on the top 5. Both of these clocked in with an almost 50 point lead over the previous three songs revealed. "Count Me In" lost the tie-breaker because unlike our forthcoming reveal, it doesn't have any #1 ranks. This was one of only two remaining songs to not have anyone place it as their favorite Deana Carter tune. Still, it received a lot of fanfare and racked up ten top 10 rankings and no one put it lower than the teens in their list. Musically it's a comforting ballad with a sweet vocal over lyrics about wanting a love that's genuine after being burned by empty promises of relationships past. It was a success as the third single from Did I Shave My Legs for This?, though it was overshadowed a bit due to being sandwiched between her three #1 hits. "If heartaches and tears and shadows of doubt Are part of the deal, you can count me out But if you're talking about a game I can win You can count me in"

"Count Me In" is such a great ballad! It feels like one of those songs that could have been sung by anyone. Martina, Reba, Pam, Patty, early Faith, etc. all could have knocked it out of the park! Deana's lucky it fell into her lap as such a new artist. (Well, same goes for songs like "Strawberry Wine" too, obviously. But that one feels more like her song, that might not have resonated the same way if anyone else sang it, whereas "Count Me In" would have just been damn good regardless of who sang it.)

And our final song to miss out on the top 5 comes at the expense of our first #1 loss of the game, with LBTrocks inadvertently committing to his flopping nature yet again. "Angels Working Overtime" flirted with the top 5 during the submission process, but it ultimately slipped out in the end and came up shy by about a dozen points. This brings the end of the run for Everything's Gonna Be Alright, leaving only her debut era (with 4 songs left) and I'm Just a Girl (with "There's No Limit" left) in the running. "Angels Working Overtime" tells the life story of a girl over three verses as she progresses from being abandoned at a rest stop at birth up to falling in love with a boy she meets as she ventures out west. It is also notable for having a children's choir, and being one of the few songs I've heard where that element felt like it truly 'worked' on the track. I definitely feel like this is one of her best singles and deserved better on the charts, and would've been a bigger hit if it had been released earlier in the album cycle. In addition to a #1 loss, three others lose a runner-up, and almost everyone loses a top half ranking, but d3vin44 loses a bottom 5. "They stopped a few minutes out of Santa Fe She got out for a smoke and they drove away She hitched a ride with a boy right out of school He said 'I'm headed out west' and she said 'Me too If that's all right'"

Lmao I guess I forgot that many people write their own songs! This must be what happens when you stan for such floppishly infrequent songwriters as Martina McBride, Sara Evans, George Strait, and Reba McEntire...
