I know you're not doing pre-reveal questions for these, but I thought I'd go ahead and do some anyways! I tend to knock a lot of these albums out ahead of time so I like doing them before reveals as it helps to refresh my memory lol. Anyways, here goes...
For the Win: "You Don't Even Know Who I Am"
Top 5 Songs: "You Don't Even Know Who I Am " and "I Try To Think About Elvis" in the top two along with the albums other two singles "Here I Am" and "Halfway Down" both landing in the top four. That leaves only one album track for the top five and while I'm holding out hope that it'll be "Ships" I'm more inclined to think it'll be either the title track or "A Handful of Dust".
Bottom 3 Songs: "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)" out first followed by "Feelin' Good About Feelin' Bad" and "Over My Shoulder"
Most Polarizing: "Ships" / Least Polarizing: "You Don't Even Know Who I Am"
And how about this for a Throwback Thursday...here's a clip I found of Patty winning Album of the Year for When Fallen Angels Fly at the 1995 CMA Awards! Oh, and if you feel inclined to rewind by a couple of minutes you'll be treated to a performance of George singing "Check Yes Or No" ;)

Handful of dust, handful of dust Sums up the richest and poorest of us True love makes priceless the worthless Whenever it's added to a handful of dust
However small though our worth may be When shared between two hearts Is even more than it would ever be Measured on its own, apart And our half what it could be Is now twice what it was When true love is added to These handfuls of dust9. "Feelin' Good About Feelin' Bad" is quite catchy! This album is so good though, and something had to be last place. This was my #8, but I can totally see where we all just collectively liked other songs more. Thrilled to see "Handful Of Dust" do so poorly here! I do like this song, but I just found myself consistently underwhelmed by it every time I revisited this album. tim's been sending me PMs leading me to believe that this was supposed to be some well-loved album track, so I was disappointedly thinking I would be the only one who was underwhelmed! OMG, "Ships" already!!!! That's a shocker!! Tbh, for multiple years now people have been trying to tell me that this was one of the best songs of this album, one of the biggest missed hits of her entire career, one of the biggest masterpieces she's ever done, etc. And I have TRIED to get into it so many times now... But I have come up underwhelmed every single time. Yes, the lyrics have that Gretchen Peters intelligence about them, but the melody is lacking in a way that Gretchen's songs usually are not, and the vocals are lacking emotion in a way that Patty's ballads usually are not. I guess this proves that I am not as crazy as I thought I was for finding this one somewhat underwhelming!

bboat11 What do you think of her alternate take on “Handful of Dust” on Mountain Soul II? I like “Ships,” but it’s low for me because it never quite goes anywhere. On an album this strong, that puts it near the bottom.

Other than "Feelin' Bad at Feelin' Good" leaving this isn't quite how I thought the bottom 3 would play out. I was really holding out hope that "Ships" would at least make it one or two spots higher, but it ended up leaving quite early in the Gretchen Peters rankdown that was done last winter and so I kind of already had an idea of who liked and who didn't. I'm actually most disappointed to see "A Handful of Dust" leave so early because that has always been one of my favorite tracks both from this album and her second bluegrass release Mountain Soul.

"A Handful of Dust" is way too low! </3
The other two songs revealed were my bottom 2 though and I didn't care for either tbh, so I'm pretty okay with the way this is starting off.

This is such a solid album. I like "Old Weakness..." a fair bit. I think I prefer Tanya Tucker's version, but Patty's is great as well.
I always thought that "A Handful Of Dust" should have been a single from this album over "Halfway Down". I'm disappointed to see it so low here.

The predictable yet correct top 3! I will be happy with any of them winning, but I fully expect it to be 3 “Here I Am, 2 “Elvis”, and 1 YDEKWIA

I can't quite put my finger on it but "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)" has always seemed a bit out of place on this album. This is also a song that has been covered a handful of times by other artists over the years and I actually much prefer the rawness of the delivery from both Delbert McClinton and Tanya Tucker on this track over Patty's.
If there was going to be a single miss the top five it was bound to be "Halfway Down" as that has always been a bit more of a polarizing song amongst her catalog of hits. If I'm not mistaken this was the first song written by Jim Lauderdale to be released as a single and I can certainly hear his influence on it (it was George Strait of course who put Jim's name on the radar of other country artists thanks to Pure Country). It's a song that I always enjoy whenever I happen to come across it, but it just isn't one of her hits that I find myself revisiting.
I had a hunch that the title track was going to be the highest placing album track and I'm glad it managed to make it just outside of the top three...great song and one that I do find myself revisiting quite a bit!
Speaking of the top 3 I think we all pretty much assumed these would be the final three songs remaining and I think they'll probably end up placing just as they did in her artist rankdown. Here's my predictions:
3. Here I Am 2. I Try To Think About Elvis 1. You Don't Even Know Who I Am
I suppose there is a chance the opposite could happen and "I Try To Think About Elvis" could pull of a win here, but I still think the epic "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" will prevail.

Well that was unexpected! I actually thought this would get more support than it did, but I think the problem it has is that it's one of her more overplayed songs...I mean I don't think a week goes by that I still don't hear this song come on the radio. I'll even admit to usually just hitting skip at that point because I've heard this so many times over the years. It's a still a jam, though!
I'm pleasantly surprised to see "Here I Am" make it into the top two because it wasn't even able to make it into the top ten in her artist rankdown. I'm still expecting it to bow out second, however.

"You Don't Even Know Who I Am" is a song that had to grow on me, but I love it now. It's a bit slow, but the lyrics are so well-written and descriptive, and the way she launches into the chorus vocally is pretty effortless and gorgeous.

Things may have started off a bit rocky for me in this rankdown but I ended up getting a perfect ranking for the top three! As I mentioned above I had set me expectations for "Here I Am" a bit low because of how it ended up performing in her artist rankdown, so I'm thrilled to see it do so well here and make the top two. There wasn't really any doubt in my mind, though, that "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" would come out victorious because it really is one of those songs that to me at least pretty much defines Patty's career. Thanks again for taking us down memory lane, castleoblivion26 , and I'm looking forward to the next two albums (which I might've already completed lol )!

bboat11 What do you think of her alternate take on “Handful of Dust” on Mountain Soul II? I like “Ships,” but it’s low for me because it never quite goes anywhere. On an album this strong, that puts it near the bottom. Sorry I never responded to this! I was not familiar with the bluegrass version, so I had to come back to check it out. As a general rule I prefer 90s mainstream country instrumentation to anything bluegrassy, but this one may be an exception! This song works really well as a bluegrass song!

Also, I am surprised to see "Halfway Down" get the "You Will" treatment from this album! I am happy seeing at least one album track be able to sneak ahead of it, but I figured it would still make it to the top 5. I see I got a perfect ranking though, so that's great! "Over My Shoulder" is a really fantastic song that I am happy to have discovered from this album. In fact, it was my highest album track! Patty's delivery here is so good, and the production is also different enough from the rest of the album to make this stand out in a good way. Happy to see it sneak into the top 5! There was no question in my mind that the title track would end up as the highest album track. And it deserves! That baritone guitar in the intro is downright beautiful and sets the song off on the right foot. The explosive chorus is fun too. Predictable but correct top 3!! However, they did NOT finish in a predictable order!!! I thought "Here I Am" would get a little bit less support just because it could be seen as boring compared to "Elvis". It is so fantastic though! One of my favorite ballads from Patty I have always considered it to be pretty underrated on Pulse, so seeing it make it to the RotB rankdown is awesome! "Elvis" is such a fun, and funny, song. I can definitely see where overplay would work against it, but tbh I didn't experience it until her singles rankdown, so it is still very fresh to me. "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" is turning out to be her "I'm Alright", "Independence Day", "A Little Bit Stronger", etc.! Squashing the competition almost every chance it gets!! And I am totally here for it. The verses do seem a tad boring at first, but their simplicity takes on a whole new significance when contrasted with that explosive chorus. That chorus is also one of the finest vocal accomplishments of Patty's career. Thanks for hosting, castleoblivion26! I'm excited for the next two! I've been listening ahead, and I think we're in for our best round yet
