Possibly unpopular opinion; I prefer this over the title track. Also possibly unpopular opinion; the music > the movie. Magic was long my favorite, but Xanadu has overtaken it with time. Music>>>> Movie. Unpopular opinion #2: Xanadu movie >>>>>> La La Land (which is a poor man's Xanadu, and HIGHLY overrated) Also, Fool Country should have been on the soundtrack. Olivia could make it work on pop, rock and country.

I Wanna Be Your Lover Prince
Total Points: 1762
Billboard Hot 100: 11
Billboard Top 100 of 1980: 95
From: Prince
Lead single from the Purple One's sophomore self-titled album, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was his first major success in the US, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending January 26, 1980 where it remained for 2 weeks (which means that it too was at its peak exactly 39 years ago today).
It was later revealed that the song concerned a crush Prince had at the time on pianist and singer Patrice Rushen.
Ending the reveal today with a perfect rank, congratulations newpower...
Revealing 10-1 on Tuesday (possibly Monday).

This is a great top ten. I shouldβve ranked Take Your Time higher cause Iβve also been listening to it a lot lately.

WOW. Some big surprises right before the top ten: No Fleetwood in the top ten, no Donna Summer, no Prince. I'm most gutted to see "Refugee" come up a few spots short, but the top ten is more than good enough to make up for that.
Case in point:
1 | 2 | 3 4 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 15 23
Nine of the top ten are in my top 15, all 8/10 or better. The tenth is one of the first couple of songs that isn't a 8/10, but still really solid. When my 15 is the second-worst song in this top ten (especially given what song that is), that's one hell of a top ten.
I feel pretty confident that one of "Rock With You" or "Call Me" is winning.

Ugh I knew "Sara" would get robbed. Beautiful song. Really thought about making it my #1.
1 3 4 5 6 7 10 21 32 33
I expected Prince and a Petty or Summer song to be here instead of Funkytown and Heartbreaker, but I'm glad the latter is and the former is at least an interesting addition if nothing else. My only real rooting interest is against Queen and Pink Floyd

1 2 5 6 7 9 10 13 22 23

I'll post some thoughts on the last reveals, but i gotta say AWESOME top 10.
Especially proud with you guys with "Heartbreaker". I was thinking this is gonna be too loud for this crowd, but thanks for proving me wrong. It's not #1 song, but its a scream along extravaganza and that's right up my alley.
Also 1980 had two of the best Michael Jackon songs ever.
Queen, Blondie and Pink Floyd are no brainers, so very deserving of the top 10 too.
"Funkytown" is a classic. I have the 12 inch single of that one.
....and my #1 song is in there too, so its all good.

Fleetwood Mac as a band, aside from "Go Your own Way","Rhiannon" "Don't Stop" and "Hold Me" never blew me away. I prefer their solo stuff ,and I also prefer Starship's "Sara"I'm more interested to know why " Magic" wasn't in everyone's top 10? Australians Rock. Olivia, Rick Springfield, AC/DC, Jet, INXS,...Atlas Genius.

25. Dim All The Lights (67): I'm a Donna fan, as she and ONJ were my favorite female artists pre-1985. This song is good disco and all, but it's not one of my favorite singles from her. It wasn't that popular back home either. 24. Give Me The Night (29): On the contrary, this is the type of more modern disco pop songs that I really liked. The music sounds great, the backing vocals are dreamy. One of the best songs that showed the transition of sound of the early 80s. Pretty good to see it this high. 23. Tusk (22): YAY!!! I was afraid this could be leaving earlier, so I'm pretty glad it's in the top quarter! I don't remember hearing this on the radio in the 80s... I only discovered it when I bought the Greatest Hits CD in the late 90s --and I LOVED it!! It sounded so different, unique, progressive. Weird but melodic. Subtle but with bursts of energy (horns! drums! Lindsey's -and ladies'- outbursts). FM is one of my favorite all-time bands, and this is one of their most left-field singles and one I really dig. 22. Working My Way Back To You-Forgive Me Girl (25): Another Yay!! This was a very good example of a song that mixed 60s and disco influence into one. Lots of great harmonies and vocals with a disco pop sound that even though sounds a bit dated now back it's refreshing in this list. 21. Misunderstanding (68): I'm not that big of a fan of early 80s Genesis. I appreciate what they were doing but I was more of a fan of Phil Collins' solo material these years than Genesis' (except for That's All). 20. Fame (16): YES! Another classic pop song with disco influence, plus so representative of the pop scene of that time as the theme song of a huge show. That intro riff is everything, as it's the chorus with those epic backing vocals. I do remember this song being everywhere, as the TV show was also popular back home. 19. Take Your Time (Do It Right) (35): This was just slightly popular back home back then, but it's become more popular with time. I like its extra smooth vibe and the pretty good vocals. 18. Ladies' Night (9): As I shared before, I'm a K&TG fan, but not of their Too Hot or Jungle Boogies, but of stuff like this, Celebration, Get Down On It, etc. A big hit back home that remained popular throughout the 80s and the rest of the 1900s. I specially love the last minute or so of the song with the "everything's gonna be ALRIGHT!" Classic disco here -should've stayed a bit longer. 17. Don't Do Me Like That (61): Yup, I did under-rank this a bit... I think it sounds a bit too much like a John Cougar song than a Tom Petty, which has always torn me a bit. The song is strong pop rock, though, so won't complain here, although I'm happy to see my bottom 40 cleared here. 16. Magic (4): NOOO!!!!! This is my favorite ONJ song, and one of my favorites of the decade. I was hoping she would have this in the 1980s Hot 100 :(( A big hit back home that stayed popular throughout the rest of the 1900s. I love, love how she sounds here, with her classic backing vocals, and her crisply mesmerizing lead vocals. The music also involves you from beginning to end, with some extra guitars in the chorus to add a bit of punch to it. My biggest loss so far. 15. Pop Muzik (11): Another big hit this year back home. And this is one of only two songs in this RD I had the 45 RPM The black single with the little rainbow over "MCA Records" in light blue. This and Cars were undoutebdy the least 70s and most 80s synthpop/new wave sounding in this RD. A timeless tune in my book. By the way, I also like the punker sounding B-side of the single: "The M Factor" 14. Sara (42): Back in the early 80s I wasn't that big of a fan of this type of sound. I grouped this with the Supertramp and others under a hippie-like category of songs that I didn't care much about. I remember that our main music TV channel would often play a special of an FM concert, and I'd always skip this midway as I'd get bored halfway and couldn't make myself finish watching the 7 minutes of this lol. This was likely my least favorite FM single in the 1980s. However, I did get back around after listening to the GH album in full as an experience. Under low lights in the evening, listening to this was a different experience, and after that I can use this in long drives, especially around sunset time :) I wasn't sure where to rank this amongst the 1980 classics... I could've ranked it higher for sure. 13. On The Radio (27): Sad not to have any DS song in the top 10. Although my favorite was NMT, this could've been a good representative, too. A big hit with longevity back home and a song that I think starts to branch out the disco sound and merge it with more pop elements like the omnipresent sax and bass. 12. Refugee (18): YES!! This is one of my favorite Tom Petty tunes. Great rock song with all the key elements in terms of music and vocals. A classic that although wasn't that popular back home, I've loved since I first heard in the late 90s. 11. I Wanna Be Your Lover (54): Pulse never disappoints at ranking any song made by Prince regardless of how good or bad that song is I love Prince but this is not top 15 material. I mean, even Take Your Time is a better song than this one. Anyway. VERY Happy to see this one missing the top 10!!! And I have left: 1-3, 6-8, 10 21 37, 40 Good seeing that most of my top 10s survived!! :) And my 37 and 40 are pretty good songs, too, although I hope #37 leaves first to be honest...

Thanks a lot for sharing this!!! I'll share comments on a few songs that were also big hits back home and that I would've ranked in my top 50. 20 Rock Lobster - The B-52s I LOVED them in the early 1980s. This one became more popular around the time that the Party Mix (ie Party Out of Bounds + Private Idaho) was a huge hit in 1983. Such a great punk pop party type of song! It was almost whacky with all the different sounds, but it all worked. The energy in drums, bass, guitars; the different song structure that was random but consistent; Fred's freestyle vocals contrasted by the solid female vocals including semi-operatic ad-libs as well as animal-like sounds lol Madness of a song -- and I LOVED it. Maybe another key distinctive, but under-appreciated point for B-52s was their very 1980s-foretelling imagery. Their clothes, hairdos, attitude, which started showing in this video and would become key in their follow-up videos, would become key for pop culture in the 1980s, and they were among the first ones to have a 'unique' playful image. Btw, I bought the 45 RPM of Rock Lobster, which had another fun party song: 6060-842. 27 Rapperβs Delight - The Sugarhill Gang This is a great song and a precursor of sampling and rapping that deserves its own recognition as one of the most important songs of this time in music. I mean, it used one of the best disco songs ever, Chic's Good Times, but it was a strong self on its own. I always thought that Blondie's Rapture also borrowed some inspiration from this one, too. In any case, it's worth mentioning that this song also had its influence in Hispanic music, as it's responsible for two other big 2000s songs in Spanish: i) the globally (in?)famous Asereje by Las Ketchup sisters from Spain, whose chorus is a Spanishized version of the initial lyrics to Rapper's Delight, and led to people all ages dancing with their hands in all parties for more than a year ii) Tu Necesitas by Alek Syntek from Mexico, who interpolated RD in the outro to this song -a big hit in Latin America in 200 30 Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles This was among the yearend's top 30 back home. Just like Cars or Pop Muzik, it sounded a bit out of place and progressive in 1979/80. It's been one of my favorites synthpop hits of the 80s, and it would've easily made my yearend top 10. I love the dreamy female vocals and dreamy instrumentation in the intro and bridge, the rock guitar sound at the end of the second pre-chorus, and the overall melody is pure pop bliss. Also, forever remembered as the first video ever played in MTV: 34 Message in a Bottle - The Police Such a GREAT song. I remember hearing this a lot in the early 1980s. Unescapable in the decade-end and century-end rankings. It may be the Police song with the most recurrent airplay now. Personally, one of my favorite rock songs of the 1980s. This one ended up being in my decade top 20 and would've been in the top 10 for this year. I go back and forth between this one and Every Breath You Take as my favorite Police song 53 We Live For Love - Pat Benatar This was not as big a hit as other PB songs, but it's always been one of my favorite of her songs. I like that it sounds a bit more synthpop than rock, and I LOVE her more subdued, sexy vocals that go really high in the chorus. I may like the remix version a bit more as it's an even more new wave sounding 60 Iβm Alive - ELO I'm a big ELO fan, especially of songs like this. It wasn't a big hit back home, unfortunately, but it would've been a personal top 10, as I dig very much this type of production and sound. That video is something else 61 Dreamer - Supertramp This was a hit back home, and I kinda liked its quirkiness and the piano, but I wasn't a big fan of the vocals... I've increased my appreciation of its progressiveness, and it would've fared better than Take A Long Way Home, but likely not in my yearend top 40. 66 Donβt Stand So Close to Me - The Police A minor hit back home, but with good recurrent airplay in the 80s and later. Another pretty good Police song. I also ranked the 1986 version, which made my personal top 10 and at the time I liked better than the original. With time, I've come back to liking the original better, as it sounds more genuine and fresh. 71 Xanadu - Olivia Newton-John This was a big hit back home this year, and a song that I remember fondly from my childhood as my mom loved it as well. I LOVE the combo of ONJ and ELO. The sound is amazing, with strings, piano, synths, great backing vocals, and great lead vocals. This would've been in my top 20 of this year as well... maybe even top 10. One year later, the kid group Menudo released a cover of the song, which also became a big hit back home when there was a full Menudo mania --this was with the pre-Ricky Martin formation, though. I have to say that their vocals in this song are awful, but I guess it was all about a kids group back then. (They did have better songs than this one, though...) 79 Sheβs So Cold - The Rolling Stones This was a minor hit in radio, but the video had very good rotation. I do like the fun, rock vibe and vocals here. 83 Dreaming - Cliff Richard This was a hit back home, with pretty good recurrent airplay as well. I really liked the ELO-light type of melodic, melancholic vibe. A sunset-driving type of song to me 93 Turning Japanese - The Vapors This ended in the yearend's top 15 back home. I really liked the fun, pop-rock vibe of this one tbh. At that time, I didn't get the masturbation meaning, or the cultural offensiveness of the whole thing. Back home, in the 1990s this song would become just as popular after Alberto Fujimori, a Japanese descendant was elected and re-elected and re-re-elected (!!) as our President. So the intro and song was kinda everywhere in comedy and reality shows when there were talks or sketches about the President or the many nikkei that occupied government charges in the 1990s.

Guess this is a good place for my personal 1980 chart, which I finally compiled in early 1990 's. Most of these I knew of from my dad's own 45's and 8 track tape collection. I'd like to share a few songs that were also big hits back home that I don't think have been mentioned before here: - Can't Stop the Music (Village People): This was the runner-up song of the year in our #1 radio station! Following up on their success with YMCA, In The Navy, Macho Man, their Can't Stop the Music movie and soundtrack was a big hit as well. And I was all into Village People at the time, too, and had the album --until someone stole it from our house :( This is still one of my favorite guilty pleasures of the early 80s, and I would've definitely ranked this in my top 50 :) - Street Player (Chicago): This made the yearend top 10 in our #1 radio station, and was a favorite of mine in the early 80s. I was very surprised to learn this was a flop in the US (!). I liked the disco, funk, and even rock (listen to the full version) energy that was different from the ballads they would become more known for. The music, melody, and vocals were great, and I'd definitely put in my top half of a 1980 RD. I'm glad that time has sort of vindicated this song, as hits like I Know You Want Me or The Bomb sampled it heavily and contributed to its legacy - 99 (Toto): Another yearend top 10 song back home. One of their most classic sounding songs. I love the sophistipop vibe, including the intro and outro pianos, the bridge synths and overall vocals. - Sure Know Something (Kiss): Speaking of movies by groups, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park was another popular movie back home, specially following the huge success of I Was Made For Loving You. I remember watching it, as well as having Kiss posters in my bedroom This song made the yearend top 15 back home and even though it's not amongst their most popular hits globally, I still like it a lot. Paul does a great job in verses and chorus, and the bassline is great too - Hell on Wheels (Cher): Roller Boogie was another popular movie back home. Boogie Wonderland was of course a HUGE hit... HOW was also a big hit, though, ending in the yearend top 15, with an iconic video! I loved that song, too, as it had that Hot Stuff sort of disco sound with a rock edge, with the guitars, drums and of course Cher's powerful vocals. Another song I'd rank in my top half of 1980. - Gotta Go Home (Boney M): This made the yearend top 30 back home, and was one of my favorite songs of that year for sure. I played the 45 RPM (with El Lute as B-side) a lot. I even danced to it in a pre-school performance! One of my favorite disco songs ever. I was very surprised when I learned that Boney M didn't have a hit in the US (!!). Back home we jammed to Ma Baker, Rasputin, Rivers of Babylon, Daddy Cool and others. Even in 1992-93 they had a revival of sorts when new versions of their hits were played in radio stations. Their remix made it to the top 10 of my personal chart, too, as it really gave a new life to their music. Of course, this is another good case of vindication when Duck Sauce's Barbra Streisand practically turned this into a global hit again - Gonna Get Along Without You Now (Viola Wills): Another yearend top 30 song. It was kinda lost in the shuffle later in the 80s and didn't have much recurrent airplay, but I think it's a good disco song with a slightly more 80s and less 70s production - Give Me A Break (The Ritchie Family): It didn't make the yearend top 30 back home, despite being another popular track off Can't Stop the Music --but this was a song that I LOVED in the 80s. The sound, including horns and some rocker drums and guitars, plus of course the strong, energetic vocals made me really like it throughout the decade. I even revived its extended version (THE version that needs to be heard in full, and that thankfully was the version included in the 45 RPM that I had) in 1987, reaching the top of my personal chart. So yeah, this would've made my top 40 if included in a 1980 RD. - Bad Reputation (The Ritchie Family): This was the B-side to Give Me A Break. I don't think this was played back home, but was played A LOT in my home I love this one, too. That percussion, string and vocals combo made me a fan! - You and Me (Spargo): A great Italo Disco tune! A popular song back home, and one of my favorites that year for me. We had the 45 RPM as well, and I could play this vinyl a lot!! There was something in this melody and duet that I just loved, including that slight change in melody in the third minute with the "Now we see..." So many good childhood memories!! - Last Train To London (ELO): This was another big hit back home that I was utterly surprised barely made it to #39 in the Hot 100. Like WTF?! This is my favorite ELO song. I love the disco pop vibe, the overall instrumentation (strings! bass!), vocals, melody, plus it just brings back lots of good memories - I Have A Dream (Abba): Another hit back home and one of my top 10 favorite Abba songs. Also surprised about its flopping in the US Simple but effective, calming melody, that took on a different meaning some years ago when living through the loss of dear ones...

Guess this is a good place for my personal 1980 chart, which I finally compiled in early 1990 's. Most of these I knew of from my dad's own 45's and 8 track tape collection. Also he had a bunch of those k-tel hit compilation albums. My list also changes through the years. this is the most recent one. Some of these songs were so big they cruised on over to my 1980 year. mainly the T he Cars Candy-O album tracks. To start off there is a tie on #100. My entire top 100 are pretty much 1980 extras. Good!! I've spotted a few songs that were also quite popular back home, and a few favorites of mine, too 88. The Romantics - What I Like About YouA song that has had good recurrent airplay, and was a hit back in the day. I like it less than Talking in Your Sleep and One in a Million, but it's still a good rock song. 77. Blondie - Atomic A hit back home, and another favorite from this year --it would've made my top half of the RD. I loved the disco and rock combo, and the whole instrumentation. Blondie and Abba were my favorite groups in the early 80s. 65. The Whispers - ...and The Beat Goes On A hit back home, too. A pretty good disco song that also had a revival in the 00s thanks to Will Smith's Miami... 5. AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long I wasn't a fan of Meal bak at that time. I only heard this song at the end of the decade --and I really liked it! Now it's one of my favorite rock songs of the 80s. 2. The Cars - Touch and GoA pretty good synthpop tune by The Cars before they practically went all pop. It would've likely ranked around #40. ------------------- A few other 1980 hits back home: - Take a Little Rhythm (Ali Thomson): Cute bop, that's funky and folky. A hit that year, and a song with strong recurrent airplay. Another good song to listen to while enjoying sunset :) - Never Knew Love Like This Before (Stephanie Mills): I've always liked this a lot. Smooth disco music, with great lead and backing vocals, and a melody that evokes melancholy, tenderness, and a need to cuddle with your loved one :) Those ad-libs in the last minute make the song even better! Plus, this was the clear inspiration behind Madonna's Borderline - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (Abba): One of my top 3 Abba songs! This was a big hit back home, in its two versions -English and Spanish. I loved the rock elements added to this already strong disco song. The instrumentation is great -that bassline! synths and guitars!- and of course those multiply layered vocals. Further, this was revived twice with lots of success. First, with Erasure's cover in 1990 that was another #1 song in our country, and then with Madonna's Hung Up. The definition of a classic! A song that is in my top 5 of 1980. - Theme from New York (Frank Sinatra): I had always thought this was a song from like the 60s -- not 1980! Even though I'm not a fan of this type of traditional music, this is a jam! And this cover became THE version of this song. Surprised that it wasn't a big hit in the US. I would've ranked it pretty high. - Regresa a Mi (Miami Sound Machine): A spotlight in Spanish... one of the first big ballads from MSM, with a very young Gloria Fajardo de Estefan sounding lovely :)

The Top 2
Here we are again at another Top 2 finale.
To be honest I wasn't entirely sure how this year would play out. I figured Blondie would end high, but I wasn't sure who might join them in the Top 2.
Once I started to calculate the lists the Top 2 became fairly evident.
#2
Rock With You Michael Jackson
Total Points: 1919
Billboard Hot 100: 1(4)
Billboard Top 100 of 1980: 4
From: Off The Wall
"Rock With You" was the second single from Michael Jackson's album Off The Wall. Peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending January 19, 1980 the song spent 4 weeks at the summit (thus being the No. 1 song exactly 39 years ago today) and also topped the R&B chart.
It was the first of 3 singles written by Rod Temperton that Jackson would take to the Top 10 in the US.
Three No. 1 placements fall with this leaving and all but two of you ranked this inside your Top 30.
This is MJ's final appearance in an 80's rankdown (well, until I do the Top 100...).

#1
Call Me Blondie
Total Points: 2108
Billboard Hot 100: 1(6)
Billboard Top 100 of 1980: 1
From: American Gigolo Soundtrack
Written by Debbie Harry and Giorgio Moroder (with production by Moroder), "Call Me" was a huge success, spending 6 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in the Spring of 1980. It was released as a single from the soundtrack to the film American Gigolo (starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton) and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
All but one of you ranked this inside your Top 10. Impressive.
It also joins Prince's "When Doves Cry" from the Billboard 1984 Rankdown as the only other song to land at No. 1 on both the Billboard and Pulse lists.

Hope you enjoyed the rankdown!
Thanks for participating and for all the wonderful conversation that took place about this awesome year in music!
Moving along to the Billboard 1981 Rankdown and submissions are due February 16th!
Stay tuned for the soon to be launched Billboard 1982 Rankdown as well.

Just sent. This year isn't bad, but there is waaaaaaaaaaay too much soft rock which isn't my cup of tea. There are still about 40 good-decent songs. Agreed, I wasn't too impressed with this year either. Half of this list was like semi decent. I like the mid 80s-late 80s the best.

Honestly, I kind of thought "Brick" would get tanked out of the top five. Pleasantly surprised there was only one real tanker to be found, and it didn't keep it out of said top five. Top two is what I expected, though I wasn't expecting "Call Me" to dominate in the way that it did. Holy crap. That has to be the most universally loved song in a Pulse rankdown ever, right? That's insanity. Totally deserved, of course, but insanity all the same. Once again, a great 80's rankdown hosted, Unhinged. Let's now try to get the 80's over with.
