With HitDisc ending this month, I have always wondered how to determine what country each of their discs was being marketed to. The CD numbers sometimes clearly indicated the country (For example, UK) in its number. But, others did not and included singles that were never intended for the US market. Does anyone know how to decipher which HitDiscs were aimed for which countries?

I don’t have a HitDisc, but I’m working on collecting radio memorabilia. Another series, Promo Only, uses their sleeves to show who they’re marketing to. I’d look in the copyright information on the sleeve, if it comes with one. There might be one on the CD. If it was printed in Canada, it’ll probably be marketed to Canada. If it’s marketed in the US, it’ll be copyrighted US.

There might even be an address on the CD that’ll give you a clue.

Thanks, but I have been checking their website instead, not the actual CDs. I know the current scheme for letters A-E, but cannot figure out what they used for historical CDs some dating back to the 1980's. Some of the discs are just a three digit number succeeded by a letter. For example, they issued a disc in 1998 numbered 282C or another in 2011 numbered 050S. Yet, they issued another disc in 2010 numbered HU201025. There must be some scheme (format, country, etc.) as to how they numbered these that I wish I could deduce!

As a wedding and event DJ, I, like many, will miss the Hitdiscs and PrimeCuts. I was a subscriber from 2005 until December of 2018. Since Jim Weisz moved over to Promo Only, many of us signed with Promo.

I really liked the UK series since the UK versions were often cleaner than the U.S. edits. Like what was mentioned above, I'm sure we weren't supposed to receive those.

I loved checking for PromoOnly track listings back in the day because it was often the only way to find out what songs by CanCon artists were hitting radio in Canada.
