Pulse Rankdown: 2018 Year End Alternative Chart (WE'RE DONE)

1) PM both me (Red , how many times have I hosted a rankdown by now) and peacebone the top 100 Alternative songs of 2018, all ranked to your preference. (e.g. if you like a song the most, rank it the highest and vice versa). If you do not send your ranking to both me and peacebone, your ranking will be discarded.
2) The points a song has will be totaled up based on an inverse point system. So if you rank a song #100, it gets 1 point, and if you rank a song #1, it gets 100 points. All the points from the participants will be totaled up.
3) The due date for submission is Saturday, January 5th. The deadline time is 7 PM US Eastern. It's not likely that this deadline will change, so please make sure to submit before the deadline.
4) ALL songs must be ranked.
5) To avoid posting with duplicate lines when you PM me, click BBCode below the text box before pasting your list.
6) All your rankings will be posted when I post a song in this thread.
7) You are allowed to make changes to your list, as long as you do so before the deadline.
8) Please try to make the effort to listen to every song in full.

Well, well, well...look who's come crawling back.

I said all year that this was the one year-end rankdown I absolutely wanted to host, not just because I loved hosting the 2017 version and really wanted another crack at it with the year of experience I've had hosting rankdowns since the last time I hosted, but I also want to try and do things bigger and better than last time. What does that mean, exactly? Well, I want to do more ballot updates...and, assuming you guys submit in droves, like I expect you to, that shouldn't be a problem. I might add certain things to the reveals that hasn't been done before, or certainly not in a long time. In other words, I want this rankdown to feel as big as it should be, given that it's the biggest rock chart rankdown of the entire year.

In any case, this year, I've decided that doing this all on my own just isn't going to be enough. So joining me on this wild and crazy ride is none other than former multi-time rock chart rankdown host/person who jumps on my typos at a moment's notice peacebone. I'm excited to be co-hosting a rankdown this big with someone who I know is more than up to the task.

With all of that said, it's the end of the year 2018. It's time to rank...down. :kii:

Oh hey, nice to see you all again. It's my winter break, I have some time to kill, figured why not assist with the big one.

It's been another rough year for Alt radio (and it feels a little awkward having to rank this list after how good the 90s lists have been so far), but if 2017's rankdown managed to elicit so much chaos, I'm definitely looking forward to see what havoc will be wrecked in this rankdown!

It's a two week submission period. That should be plenty of time to complete this by the deadline, especially with this being the holiday season and all.

I could have made it a one week deadline, but I'd agree that a one week deadline is too short.

So, um, this thread started an hour ago, and we already have enough submissions to be able to do the 2018 Alternative rankdown's first installemnt of the B-B-B-B-BALLOT UPDATE! Yes, already. Our first five contestants are lyhom, Daryl the Beryl, wheatsquares33, Web, and Butterflies & Hurricanes. Given that a couple of posters are working on their lists right at this second, the next ballot update will probably be very soon, too. How do all of these rankings shape the early stages of the rankdown? Well, you're going to find out, anyway!

- How are things looking at the top? Well, the song at #1 has been #1 for a little bit now. It is currently almost 30 points clear of #2. #2 is 15 points ahead of #3, and #3 is 14 points beyond #4. After that, it gets much, MUCH closer...
- Incredibly, even at this early stage, just four songs have been in every top ten. Those songs do make up four of the top five, however. A couple of songs were in every top ten for at least a couple of rankings, but they did not stay that way.
- There are some big things happening early on. A couple of songs are doing surprisingly well (one, in particular, is exceeding my expectations in a big way), while one song is much, much lower than I thought it would be, even at this early point of the rankdown.
- Six songs have spent every ranking in the bottom ten, with four of the bottom six having spent every ranking in the last ten spots. This includes the current #100, which is five points behind #99.
- THRESHOLDS? ABSOLUTELY! The top ten are the only songs right now to rise above the 500 point plateau, though no one has crossed 600 points just yet. If you are in the #28 position or higher, congratulations, as you have 400 points or more early in the rankdown. On the other end of the spectrum, less than ten songs have less than 100 points. Only the bottom four have fifty or less.
- STANDARD DEVIATIONS ARE PEOPLE! (But not really.) Our two highest SDs belong to the songs at #74 and #32. Meanwhile, our lowest SD is actually fairly high up the rankdown at #16. The second-lowest is far lower: #87. The third lowest is our current #100.
- And, of course, what would a ballot update be without the perennial Pulse's Favorite Part of the Ballot Update...


Well, there are no top ten ties this early, but we do have ties at #20, #24, #36, #53, #62, and #85, and we also have a three-way tie at #32. Oh, and we have a four-way tie at #48.

I already know my top 10, because they are the ones I charted, but I need to listen to a lot of these again. Some I only previewed once and stayed away from for the rest of the year. My bottom 10 is gonna be crowded. That's for sure.

BTW, you know the year in Alt is fucked up when both Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam are in the bottom 10?

For as bad as the front end of this list is, there's actually some pretty good stuff at the back of it. This year more than ever, I hope that people don't tank songs based on their year end position, and really take their time to give every song a decent listen.
