'Baby Shark' Debuts in Billboard Hot 100's Top 40
1/8/2019 by Kevin Rutherford
The viral children's song, which spawned a dance challenge following the release of Pinkfong's 2016 version, bows at No. 32.
Another viral dance challenge has sparked a placement on the Billboard Hot 100, as Pinkfong's "Baby Shark" debuts at No. 32 on the list dated Jan. 12.
Some background for the uninitiated: "Baby Shark," whose origins date back decades, is a participatory children's song/nursery rhyme in which singers act out each verse with their hands and arms, from the eponymous youngest member of a family to the parents and grandparents.
In 2016, Pinkfong, a South Korea-based educational brand, created its version of the song and a subsequent video that has been the basis for the track's meme status. The so-called Baby Shark Challenge finds participants dancing along to the song and mimicking its commands when applicable, with social media services and the app TikTok among the hotbeds of activity for the challenge.
Initially going viral in Indonesia, "Baby Shark" spread globally before entering U.S. waters, beginning with its debut on the Kid Digital Song Sales chart in July 2018. It made its first appearance on the Streaming Songs chart in November.
Now, thanks to the song's continued streaming growth as well as the freefall of 23 seasonal titles off the Hot 100 this week post-holidays, "Baby Shark" bows at No. 32. (Given its original 2016 release date, the song needed to accumulate enough chart points to appear in the Hot 100's top 50 before it was eligible to chart, per chart rules regarding older songs.)
In the latest streaming tracking week, ending Jan. 3, "Baby Shark" earned 20.8 million streams, according to Nielsen Music, good for a new No. 16 peak on Streaming Songs. Of that sum, video views continue to be a major driver of the song's success: 73 percent. While the data that feeds Streaming Songs is U.S.-based, thanks to the track's worldwide popularity, "Baby Shark" has attracted 2.1 billion global views on YouTube to date, ranking it among the 30 most-viewed videos in the platform's history.
While streaming is the main catalyst for the song's Hot 100 entrance, "Baby Shark" also moved 3,000 digital downloads in the tracking week. It places at No. 2 on Kid Digital Song Sales, which it led for 11 weeks, beginning in September.
As previously reported, Halsey earns her first Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist, as "Without Me" ascends to the summit.

A baby shark education
How 'Baby Shark' Bit Into Pop Culture
12/13/2018 by Associated Press
Doo doo doo doo doo doo.
In the wise words of James Corden, there comes along a song every so often that defines a generation.
Doo doo doo doo doo doo.
The late-night TV host, carpool karaoke king and father of three young children was referring specifically, and wryly, to “Baby Shark,” now the bloodthirstiest of earworms for some parents and meme lovers everywhere.
Insert shark hands here.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’ve been living inside a sea anemone since at least 2015. That’s when an educational content brand in South Korea, Pinkfong, released its first shark video, later breaking the internet with a version mixing animation and two adorable human kids dancing out the story of a shark family, K-pop style, earning more than 2 billion views on YouTube.
If you still don’t know what I’m talking about, you haven’t spent enough time at summer camp or around a campfire, where singalong versions of said story with said gestures, akin to an old nursery rhyme with the same theme, have rocked on for decades.
Now, thanks to the #babysharkchallenge that has us all singing, doing our shark hands and sharing on social media, and thanks to piles of soft shark heads, toddler attire and other swag that includes singing plush toys and books, “Baby Shark” is a full-on craze, for bite-size fans anyway.
“Our toddler’s shark video addiction is a huge issue in our household,” said Columbus, Ohio, mom Kitty French. “At first it was a cute melody. Now it’s an earworm that literally all of our parent friends understand.”
Not all grown-ups are weary. If they were, would they continue to upload themselves in mashups and mixes, from R&B to Santa Claus? Can we do without the absolutely cutest home video of them all, the little girl begging Alexa to play her favorite shark jam, frustrated by the not-so-smart device’s inability to understand? What about the Texas family so enamored they synchronized their blinking, blinding holiday yard lights to the snappy tune?
Some parents of special needs kids think “Baby Shark” has not only entertained but helped their young ones. Holly Anderson is a Utah mother of four, including a 3-year-old son with autism and apraxia of speech. His autism therapist uses children’s songs on YouTube to motivate him to sit still and was the first to show him “Baby Shark.”
“He’s overstimulated visually and usually won’t watch any shows on TV or the iPad,” Anderson said. “He has a very difficult time staying still, even for a moment, and usually spends his time running around in therapy. I’m honestly not sick of it yet since it’s one of the only ways to get him calm after a meltdown.”
The one he likes the most is by Pinkfong, she said. The company has put up more than one version. Other parents said their kids prefer versions of baby, mama, papa, grandma and grandpa shark from a content provider called Super Simple. There are many, many other offerings to choose from and many, many more millions of views than the jackpot scored by Pinkfong for its dance version.
Corden, host of The Late Late Show with James Corden, isn’t the only celebrity to take on baby shark madness. He enlisted Sophie Turner and Josh Groban to perform the song on air . Ellen DeGeneres put her spin on the song on her talk show as well and Simon Cowell’s 4-year-old son popped up on the X-Factor UK as dancing cuteness ensued with singing kids accompanied by adults in shark suits for the opening of the grand final this year.
Bob Cunningham, an educator and senior adviser for the nonprofit consortium Understood.org, which supports parents of kids with learning and attention issues, sees several benefits to “Baby Shark.”
“The song has a catchy rhythm and it uses silly sounds as well as colorful and cute animation,” he said. “Also, both the music and the animation are predictable, with repeated words, phrases, colors and movements.”

The combinations can capture and sustain attention even in children where attention isn’t a strength, Cunningham said. The song and video also engage most of the senses simultaneously and combine language with music and movement, which can appeal to kids who struggle with any of those things when they are presented in isolation. For example, the movement can support less developed language and the music can offer support when movements are difficult, he said.
Clearly, other kid content can do the same, but “Baby Shark” ruled at Jason Simms’ house, at least for a time.
Simms, who lives in Deep River, Connecticut, said his 14-month-old daughter Fionnuala first heard the song when she was 8 months old but has since tired of it, before her parents did, once her language comprehension skills began kicking in. “It was one of the first things in life she directly expressed a preference for, so that’s why we picked it for her Halloween costume,” he said. “At the end of the Super Simple version, it says ‘bye bye sharks’ and that became how we say bye in our family. She now fusses when she hears it.” But there’s plenty more fish in the “Baby Shark” sea.
A Montreal-based company, WowWee, has a Pinkfong license for North America to sell the shark family in plush toys that sing when tummies are squeezed, along with soft song cube versions. Available exclusively on Amazon on pre-order that guaranteed delivery in time for Christmas, they sold out in two and a half days earlier this month, said Davin Sufer, WowWee’s chief technology officer. Sufer would not disclose how many units were gobbled up at $19.99 each. More will be rolled out at a broader range of retailers come early 2019, along with new offerings.
Third-party sellers who nabbed the toys are now offering them for more than $100 on Amazon. The privately-held WowWee was already in talks with Pinkfong as far back as nearly a year ago when “Baby Shark” truly exploded, said Sufer, who has three kids of his own, including a 9-year-old daughter who came home from camp last summer singing the song before she knew his involvement. “The tune itself has an addictive quality to it,” he said. “You hear it once or twice and you hear yourself singing, doo doo doo doo doo doo. I could see maybe parents getting a little tired of it, but kids aren’t.”

Seems before BTS crossed over, Japanese artists had more success with albums (like BABYMETAL), whereas Korean artists did better than them with singles in the US. I wonder if Korea will ever get their #1 like Japan does. Even if they do, I feel like it won't live on like "Sukiyaki" has.

Halsey 'Speechless' After 'Without Me' Hits No. 1 on Hot 100: 'Thank You Guys For Everything'
1/7/2019 by Rania AniftosHalsey claimed her first No. 1 in a lead role on the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday (Jan. 7) with her deeply personal tune "Without Me." Her first appearance in general atop the chart was 2016's smash collab with the Chainsmokers, "Closer," which spent 12 weeks at the summit. The songstress took to Twitter to express excitement and gratitude over the accomplishment, noting that she is "speechless." "this song came out of a very lonely place and the past few weeks have showed me just how loved and supported i could be," she continued. Lauren Daigle Continues Historic Crossover as 'You Say' Hits Hot 100's Top 40
1/9/2019 by Gary Trust
Jesse Grant/Getty Images Lauren Daigle performs onstage at NAMM Show 2018 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Jan. 25, 2018 in Anaheim, Calif. The song has become a rare Christian and adult pop radio hit.
Lauren Daigle continues to tally Billboard chart achievements. This week, she lands her first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 as "You Say" surges to No. 34 (on the list dated Jan. 12).
One week earlier, the ballad became the first song by a female artist to have hit the top 10 on both Christian Airplay, where it spends a 17th week at No. 1, the longest reign for a woman in the chart's history (which dates to 2003), and Adult Pop Songs, where this week it rises 10-9.
Only one other song previously hit the top 10 on both Christian Airplay and Adult Pop Songs: The Fray's "How to Save a Life," in 2006-07. Both songs followed the recipe for a shared Christian and pop radio welcome: an inspirational message woven by lyrics that aren't overtly religious.
The success of "You Say" on Christian Airplay isn't surprising: the song is Daigle's fourth No. 1 among nine top 10s, all since 2015. Perhaps its pop breakthrough shouldn't be considered unexpected, either: parent album Look Up Child, her second proper studio LP, debuted at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200 in September and has earned 549,000 equivalent album units through the week ending Jan. 3, according to Nielsen Music.
"You Say," meanwhile, has drawn 114 million on-demand U.S. audio and video streams combined and sold 368,000 downloads to date. It concurrently zooms 26-18 on Adult Contemporary and is nearing the Pop Songs airplay chart. (Warner Bros. is promoting the song to pop formats, while Centricity continues to work it to Christian radio.)
Adult pop programmers playing "You Say" find the song an easy fit.
"A segment of our audience is familiar with Lauren Daigle from Christian radio, but whether they know her or not, the song connected quickly," says Jill Roen, assistant program director and music director at Adult Pop Songs reporter KSTP Minneapolis.
KSTP program director Leighton Peck notes another angle seemingly contributing to the song's secular acceptance: similarities in vocal tone between Daigle and an artist that by now needs no introduction to pop audiences: Adele. Says Peck, "I think people from Christian radio know Lauren and love the song, and most of our listeners think it's an Adele song, until they realize it isn't through our on-air promotion."
"Sounding like Adele may have helped to speed up the process of our listeners getting to know and like the song, but beyond that, 'You Say' has lyrics and a sound that our audience likes a lot," Roen adds.
"From time to time, Christian songs hit consumption levels that force us to take notice," says KHMX Houston PD Chase Murphy. "We put 'You Say' into research to see if our audience was aware of it, since only the Christian station in town was playing it and we share very little audience. Research confirmed that this was a song we needed to embrace sooner rather than later."
"Programmers who are ignoring the song because 'it came from Christian radio' are being silly and short-sighted," muses KZZO Sacramento PD Chad Rufer. "'You Say' sounds great on the air. Quite simply, it has all of the signs of a hit."

Travis Scott Snags First Streaming Songs No. 1 as Lead Artist With 'Sicko Mode'
1/9/2019 by Kevin Rutherford
Photo by David LaChapelle Travis Scott The rapper had previously attained the top spot as a featured act on Kodak Black’s “ZEZE.”
Though it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 over a month ago, Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” had yet to be the most streamed song in the U.S. -- that is, until now.
The song ascends 8-1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart dated Jan. 12, a move pulled off by the track’s post-holidays increase in streams coupled with the freefall of holiday titles on the list.
In all, “Sicko Mode” accumulated 43.1 million streams in the week ending Jan. 3 (up 8 percent), according to Nielsen Music.
“Sicko Mode” is Scott’s first No. 1 on the chart as a lead artist and second total, following the three-week reign of Kodak Black’s “ZEZE,” featuring Scott and Offset, late last year. Previously, his best rank as a lead artist had been “Watch,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert and Kanye West, at No. 7 in May 2018.
The tune’s 43.1 million week is its third biggest yet, topped only by the charts dated Dec. 15 (43.3 million) and Aug. 18 (55.1 million, its release week).
“Sicko Mode” had previously ruled the On-Demand Streaming Songs chart, which measures audio-only on-demand clicks, for three nonconsecutive weeks last August and September. The track is No. 3 on the latest tally.

“Nobody” by Wonder Girls charted at #76 in 2009 after they opened up for the Jonas Brothers. I’m pretty sure they were the first Koreans to ever chart as well. Nobody also sold quite a big number of physical CD single sales when it debuted

Do we think Sicko Mode is the first of many smash hits for Travis? He had a kind of low-key track record on the Hot 100 before it. I didn't even know this is his only top 10 as a lead.
