Barack Obama Makes Billboard Chart Debut
1/2/2019 by Lauren Huff
Bill Pugliano/Getty Images Barack Obama speaks at a rally at Detroit Cass Tech High School on Oct. 26, 2018 in Detroit. The former president appears on 'Hamilton's' "One Last Time" remix.
Former president Barack Obama made his debut on the Billboard charts this week, landing at No. 22 on the Jan. 5-dated Hot R&B Songs chart with "One Last Time (44 Remix)."
Creator of the Broadway hit musical Hamilton Lin-Manuel Miranda released the track, which is a gospel-inspired remix of a song from the show, on Dec. 20. The release was part of a series of "Hamildrops" that are aimed to raise money for several different nonprofits.
The chart appearance comes after Hamilton co-creators Miranda, Thomas Kail, Andy Blankenbuehler and Alex Lacamoire received a special honor for groundbreaking work at the Kennedy Center Honors in early December.
The track — whose name is a throwback to Obama, the 44th president — features original Hamilton cast member Christopher Jackson, gospel musician BeBe Winans and, of course, the former politician, who delivers George Washington's farewell address. Jackson played Washington in the original run of the musical.
This is the first appearance on the charts for Obama. This week's most popular current Hot R&B songs are ranked by radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen Music, sales data as compiled by Nielsen Music SoundScan and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by Nielsen Music.
An instant pop-culture behemoth, Hamilton nabbed a record 16 Tony nominations and 11 wins in 2016. The musical is a take on the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton.

Obama was in Lil Wayne’s “Dedicate” which peaked at 14 on the Hot 100 in October.

I hope Sunflower will be no.1 in the next couple of weeks. If only post team cares charts this will be no.1 easily by playing their cards right.

I'm sorry but I am rooting for Without Me SO HARD rn! Ari did what she needed to do with thank u, next and it's Halsey's turn now, even if it's just one week. It would make me feel good to see that first #1 solo hit. Pop is back bitches.

I'm loving Sunflower as of late. They better do something and make Sunflower #1. They already messed up with Better Now, so hopefully Sunflower won't end up the same.

Guys... I have a question:
Let's say, hypothetically speaking, that Carey's "All I Want For Xmas Is You" goes to #1 in Dec. 2019 and then returns to #1 again in Dec. 2020; 2021; 2022 etc. would Billboard classify that as her having achieved her 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd number ones?
Or will it just remain a repeated 19th #1 single for her because the song had already gone number one beforehand?
Would Billboard even allow that to happen?
For example, Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" went #3 in 2012. Had it gone to #1 for a second time would it have been classified as her having scored her 12th #1 and a posthumous one at that?

A repeated 19th #1 single if it were to go #1 again in 2020, 2021 etc.? I'm guessing her 20th #1 single would have to be an entirely different song?

Correct. It’s the same song and recording. If “Thank You, Next” were to fall to #2 this week just to return to #1 the next week, it wouldn’t make that Ari’s second #1.

What would old Donnie boy’s music be like? Anyway, let’s get Sunflower and Without Me to number one. Both absolute jams

Chubby Checker hit #1 with "The Twist" in two separate chart runs, but his #1 count is still at two (for "The Twist" and "Pony Time"), not three. (https://www.billboard.com/music/chubby-checker/chart-history) So if Mariah kept hitting #1 with "All I Want..." then yes, it'd still just be her 19th #1 song.
I wonder, however - what if she hit #1 with the original, then a year later with a remix featuring the year's hottest rapper, Lil' Big Dollar$? Would that be the 19th and 20th #1s, or would it be a "Perfect" situation?

I don’t see a remix charting separately getting more chart points than the original anyway, though.

The Bieber version was a different song, much like Reba's version of Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You", so those count separate.
I'm guessing the 2010 version was significantly different from the original as well. Haven't heard it though.
But most of the appeal for these Xmas songs is the nostalgia from earlier years. I'm guessing a new Drake version of AIWFCIY would need at least a decade or so before becoming a staple, (much like newer stuff like Ariana's song or Kelly's "struggle" in comparison to the classics).

What do you all think it would take for "The Twist" to be surpassed on the 'All-Time Hot 100 and a new song be ranked #1? Is it even possible with the recurrent rules? Perhaps: ● 16-18+ weeks at #1. ● 35+ weeks in the Top 10 (More than half of which is spent in the Top 5). [I'm almost certain that a song with this much longevity at the top would easily past the 25/52 rule]. With Streaming growing even bigger in dominion I could see this becoming the case by as early as 2021, at least, if released by a massive artist or a random song becomes a meme, goes viral and completely ANNIHILATES U.S/Global social media. I wonder why radio ignores Sunflower. It's been no.1 on Itunes, spotify, deezer and youtube. no.2 on Amazon and somewhat no.6 on AM. Like what's wrong with the song with a blockbuster movie.

Yikes, Ariana Grande just released a vinyl for imagine and thank u, next. It’ll boost sales for thank u, next, but will it be enough to keep the #1 position?

Radio is currently recovering from the Xmas and New Year freeze. Expect big updates this week and next week for all songs.
