Didn’t Elton John come out in the early 90s? George Michael came out in the mid 90s prior to the release of Older (the album with Fastlove) I believe. I forget if Sam Smith hit #1 but I feel like he’s the only example of a gay male that comes to mind who hit it big after coming out rather than coming out after becoming popular. Then you have Olly Alexander and Troye Sivan but they haven’t broken the mainstream as much. Women have had better luck. Melissa Etheridge, for example. Adam Lambert broke the top 10 with whataya want from me |

I may have missed someone. I think Sam Smith is probably the LGBT+ male who has come the closest to #1 recently when "Stay With Me" reached #2. A random one I remember is MNEK reaching #13 with Zara Larsson on "Never Forget You". Felix Jaehn!!! #1 for 6 weeks and song of the summer If the stupid Billboard ever credited him. |

I'm so, so sad the last few album bombs have comparatively flopped...  Is "MIA" the highest an entirely-in-Spanish song has been on the airplay chart recently? "I Like It", "Despacito" and "Mi Gente" all had sections in English. |

OG Despacito was definitely much bigger outside of the English-speaking territories. The Bieber version never played on the radio here. Which is curious, because radio really caught on to the Beyoncé versions of "Mi Gente" and "Perfect", songs that had already had airplay before B was added. They also started playing the Kane Brown version of Camila's "Never Be the Same".

Rooting for "Without Me" this week, and it's looking pretty good that it will take it! Hoping "Sunflower" can manage to follow it as well. I like it when there's a decent turnover at the top rather than one song ruling for months on end.
