I had no illusions that "Smoky Mountain Rain" would do all that well (even if I was rooting for it), but "Time" being this low is shocking.
I kind of wish I had ranked my 99 at 100 now. Not like it would have made much of a difference, but at least I could have rooted against it even harder. I just don't get what people see in that song.

70. America (82): This sounds too... American? LOL. Like almost cringeworthy for me.
69. Sweetheart (56): This was actually my favorite discovery of this RD. I initially had it in my 70s but the more I heard it the more I liked it. The vocals and music reminded me of Toto (eg Hold The Line), which added to its appeal.
68. Hearts (32): Noooo :( Second top 40 loss. I really liked this song back in the day. The vocals, music, this kind of nostalgic feeling behind it. I'm not surprised at its low position, but I hoped it could be a bit higher.
67. Guilty (74): This was my least favorite of her songs in this RD, so not mad at it leaving at this point.
66. Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) (34): Third top 40 loss :(( Pretty smooth, elegant music, and solid vocals with a mood, vibe that is haunting and mesmerizing. A great sunset type of song.
65. More Than I Can Say (51): Nice melody, music, and vocals. A classic smooth song.
64. Lady (13): !!!! And now it's time for my first top 20 loss :( :'( Heartfelt ballad, with emotional vocals, strong melody, and subtle but effective production. I especially like the melody in the last minute. One of my top 3 Kenny Rogers songs and amongst my favorite early 80s ballads. This seriously deserved being at least in the top half.
63. This Little Girl (65): Good first listen, a nice song with a more classic rock'n roll vibe.
62. Somebody's Knockin' (57): Another good first listen. I actually thought it was a he and hot a she.... and I didn't associate it with county music. However clueless I was about it, I liked the melody and vocals a lot
61. Suddenly (73): I love Olivia, but the verses of this song have always felt underwhelming to me. The harmonies with Clif also work very well.

#70. America - Neil Diamond I guess his best song? Don't know many after this one, but his vocals are still a no no for me.
#69. Sweetheart - Franke and the Knockouts I can't believe at my age I'm still running into first time listens? I remember Frankie Valli, but who the hell were these guys? Songs was passable for lite rock.
#68. Hearts - Marty Balin More first time listens. didn't care for this one.
#67. Guilty - Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb This is a good song. Barry and Barbra did a fine job together vocally.
#66. Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) - Christopher Cross I recall the movie Arthur more than this song. I'll stick with "Sailing and "Ride Like The Wind"
#65. More Than I Can Say - Leo Sayer I always thought this was Willam Katt's brunette brother. I even watched 'Carrie' last night and again thought the same thing. I always liked this song too.
#64. Lady - Kenny Rogers probably my favorite Kenny Rodgers song. Very nice lyrics to dedicate to a lady.
#63. This Little Girl - Gary U.S. Bonds THis was very uptempo. You can tell he was associated with Bruce Springsteen and Co.,but who the heck was this guy and whatever happened to him?
#62. Somebody's Knockin' - Terri Gibbs This seriously sucked. I didn't like her vocals one bit. Sounded like a saloon piano song. Before listening to the song I was confusing her with Terri Garr.
#61.Suddenly - Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard Bite me you tankers. This is a great ballad. ON-J and Cliff sound amazing together. I admit I'm bias cause Xanadu is one of my favorite movies ever, but even then this is a wonderful melody.
part 2.
#60. Smoky Mountain Rain - Ronnie Milsap Finally my #99. I hated this song. and not just because it mentions the word "rain" , but because of everything else too.
#59. A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do) - Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio This is a great R&B ballad type song. Love the lyrics to this one. Love the Jack and Jill line. The music video is up in tremoundouz quality too.
#58. I Love You - Climax Blues Band Another first time listen. Not bad. This is what I consider borderline cheesy.
#57. The Best Of Times - Styx I remember my cousins chose this one for their graduation song. I liked "Too Much Time On My Hands" better, but this is still a massive Power ballad. It was palyed on hard rock stations like KLOS and KMET. Not surprising I'm one of the biggest ranker for this classic.
#56. Really Want To Know You - Gary Wright This had some interesting instruments works, but other than that it was very boring.
#55. Time - Alan Parsons Project I was never much of a fan of this progressive rock band. Progressive sounds kinda "cheesy" to me. I liked "Eye In The Sky" and "Games People Play". This one sounded like discount Pink Floyd. No thanks.
#54. Rosanne Cash - Seven Year Ache This wasn't bad but didn't do much for me among this list of songs. #53. A Little In Love - Cliff Richard I always enjoyed Cliff Richard's songs. This is a fair slot for the song. I would have preferred to rank "Dreaming" tho.
#52. Winning - Santana Santana is hit or miss for me. It all depends who is doing the vocals. Chad and Rob sounded great. This was Alex Ligertwood. I didn't care for this guy'd vocals too much.
#51. Woman In Love - Barbra Streisand I was more fond of Barbra songs in 1981. They were basically female sung Bee Gees songs. The melody on this song was Olivia Newton-John worthy.

OK, good on us for getting rid of some of the biggest turds in this top 50 (Believe It Or Not, Endless Love, DododoDadada). But still, to think of some of the songs they beat...yikes guys, just absurd.

I didn't lose anything of real significance in this set (and we took care of a surprising amount of riff raff), but...I just can't shake this 99, can I?

I remember hearing the overlooked 'Hey Nineteen' blaring in a store once and the service rep said it's considered one the best songs for testing out sound quality in speakers and headphones - apparently due to Steely Dan's sonic sophistication. That always stuck with me.
I love Passion, too bad it didn't make the top 40, it's one of Rod's best tunes.
I thought For yOur Eyes Only was going to be the highest rated Sheena song? Looks like the Morning Train is.
