I’m assuming everyone is aware that 7 rings has payola? I’m also sure that billboard is aware of that. Isn’t it an illegal practice? Shouldn’t Billboard take action on this? Payola? Is this stan twitter? Payola is the very illegal practice of paying radio stations to play a song. A radio deal =/= payola. Radio stations pay attention to the songs people want to hear (for the most part), so it’s not really surprising that they’re playing the song that’s been #1 on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes for the past four days. Actually, that's not how radio deals work. You (in this case, record labels) make radio deals. Radio stations don't just "play the songs people want to hear". There's a reason why new songs from certain artists that aren't necessarily performing well by any metric also get radio deals. DJ Khaled is a great example. All his singles get radio deals. Also, some radio deals even get announced BEFORE the single drops.

Ariana Grande's fifth studio album, "thank u, next" will be released on February 8, 2019. It already has major hype by not only her fanbase but also the GP. If it gets promoted hard enough by Spotify and Apple Music, it has the potential to outsell Drake's album, Scorpion, which broke Spotify and AM records. The current number for most songs in the top 10 in a single week is Drake with 7. I see Ariana coming close, maybe 4 in one week. I feel like NASA, needy and break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored all the potential to get in the top 10 as well as obviously 7 rings and TUN which will probably be #1 and #2 on the week of the release. 1. 7 rings 2. thank u, next 3. Sunflower 4. Wow. 5. NASA 6. Without Me 7. needy 8. break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored 9. New Cardi B 10. Girls Like You This is exactly why people complain when you start threads. You keep saying things like this. Drake's deal with Spotify was met with a harsh reaction so don't expect Ariana to get the same treatment. She'll be massively promoted, but we'll have to wait and see. We've seen her singles do well but streaming album songs massively over an entire week is a different thing. And Drake pulled in over 730 million streams in the US in his first week. Has Ariana even pulled in 300 million streams before? And with 12 songs? Congrats on messing this thread up.

We haven't even heard the songs and we're already guessing they're heading top 10. It's time to stop. This is why I like waiting for data from at least three days of the tracking week to ever speak on how well a song will perform. At least, wait to hear the song.

Didn’t her last album fail to get one new song into the top 20? Yes! But that was because there was zero promo by either Spotify and AM, and we are at the peak of her career. The hype is real. Hype doesn't always equate to the level of success you expect. Remember the hype for Rihanna's ANTi era and Frank Ocean in 2016? People kept bugging Rihanna for an album like each person was gonna buy a thousand copies each. People thought Frank Ocean was gonna move a million units first week and he ended up doing 250k and a week later, it was like he never dropped an album at all. Even Drake did lower numbers that I expected (granted, he played himself by now doing a merch bundle like everyone else).

It is just stupid how radio won't let go Girls Like You and make way for newer songs.

In the case of TUN for example, that song didn’t have a radio deal, nor was it ever sent to radio but stations were CHOOSING to play it based on how well it was doing on other platforms. I’m just assuming that the amount of spins that 7R is getting is a mixture of both scenarios.

mackattack I kinda get what you're saying. If Drake drops a single today, Rhythmic and Urban radio stations immediately begin playing the song because it's a Drake song and because his songs always do well on those formats. Perhaps Ariana gets the same treatment on Pop radio stations.

Um, on the first day of 7 rings’ release, it got 13M+ audience...The radio deal that Ariana has ontains multiple radio stations. Ariana and her team paid for her songs to get spins. The term ‘radio deal’ is a nicer way of saying payola.

The first day won't even help it on the Hot 100 next week anyways. It will lose around 9M audience on Friday because of all the extra "bought" spins it's not going to have anymore.

Radio stations are allowed to play songs in exchange for money as long as the audience is made aware that it’s sponsored airtime. If a radio station was paid to play a song and they didn’t disclose that it was advertising is some way, THAT would be payola. But of course stans just use the term payola as long as any song by an artist they don’t like is doing well on radio. 13M is pretty standard for a radio deal btw. Look What You Made Me Do debuted 20M audience on its first day and I don’t remember hearing this amount of outrage. You very clearly don’t know what you’re talking about.

Shame on Billboard for linking the YouTube videos to both songs in that very article, and hence promoting even more streams.

The bullets for the AC/HAC/Urban AC charts at kworb are all weird/off.
The one useful thing about the R Kelly article is we get data for how songs are selling on random charts (i.e. #12 on Digital R&B Songs is 2000 sold).,

I really hope Post sends Stay to radio before officially ending the era and moving on. With Wow. I think he already seems to be moving on to newer stuff, but Stay deserves to smash. It doesn't deserve to be just a deep cut.

Shame on Billboard for linking the YouTube videos to both songs in that very article, and hence promoting even more streams. Not that sales matter that much, but I noticed 4 Celine albums that had IYA were 'reissued' this week to allow album sales Last week, when they pulled IYA, they were 'partial' albums. I figured they would do something since it's the Xmas album, which is always a seller and 3 GH collections. ARTPOP, though, is still partial.

Let's be real. "Radio deals" are payola under a different name with just enough bending of the rules for it to be legal. The difference between today and back when Payola was a scandal, is that now there is massive consolidation of radio, so you don't have to go station-by-station to bribe your way on to a playlist, you just get the massive corporation that owns thousands of stations to decide to prioritize it. Believe it or not there was a time where individual radio stations could "break" a song by being ahead of the curve and finding and playing unknown songs. (I believe that's how Everything But the Girl's "Missing" became a hit -- one station gave it a shot and got such a good response that other stations followed suit.) Now that's essentially impossible as radio is a follower, not a leader.
Fortunately the internet has changed things up for the better and created other avenues for new artists to find an audience without necessarily needing a corporate overlord on their side already.

The best we can hope for is the Grammys performance of Stay.

7 rings has a 3:1 lead over the other. "7R" has held up really well. Has it held up even better than "TUN" did its first week? "7R" had over 3.6 million streams on U.S. Spotify yesterday.
