"Eye in the Sky" missing the top 20 is a mistake. (If only "Sirius" was part of the single, because it absolutely would have been in my top five in that scenario.)

I figured "Our Lips Are Sealed" would be the highest of the Go-Go's song, but I wasn't expecting "We Got the Beat" to be the lowest. I'm also very surprised to see "Hurts So Good" not just be top 20, but be higher than "Jack & Diane". Not complaining, though.

This is a well-written tune that fit perfectly in the emerging British pop/new-wave sounds that blanketed radio in the early 80s. She had what it takes for a breakthrough ... the looks, the former-star-turned-producer Dad and talented songwriter-producer bro. 

This is likely an unpopular opinion, but it seems to me that this was one of those very few cases where auto-tune would have greatly helped if the technology existed back then.

30. Let It Whip (46): Back in the day I thought this was a song by Earth, Wind & Fire. Same type of groove. I kinda forgot about the song, but good to hear it again...

29. Gloria (29): P-P-P-P-PERFECT Ranking!! I placed this at #50 in the 1983 RD, primarily because I consider it a 1982 song. She sang this cover pretty well, making it a tougher, rocker song with her vocals. I think people in Latin America would say Self Control is her 'signature' song, primarily because we are far too familiar with Gloria's original version, which was a BIG hit in Spanish in 1979-80:

28. Eye In The Sky (12): :( This deserved top 20. Great musicality, melody, vocals. A song that often makes me relax and daydream, and takes me somewhere else. Another great sunset, evening song with pretty good memories of family road trips. A yearend top 5 back home, and an overall timeless classic.

27. Jenny (48): A pretty catchy song for sure, but my love for it has slightly decreased with time, as I find it simpler than I did back in the 80s.

26. Get Down On It (35): I'm actually glad to see it performing better than in my own ranking. My brother loved this song--and I liked it quite a bit. He bought the turquoise De-Lite 45 RPM, so I had the chance to play this a lot back home and like it more with time too. A song that still sounds groovy and fun now. Back home, this was a big hit, making the yearend top 5.

25. We Got the Beat (60): Finally!!!! I mean, overall I like a lot of The Go-Go's songs, as well as Belinda's and Jane's, so nothing against them. It's just that I've always found this one catchy but also cringeworthy, especially the verses. The 'beat' and energy are great, but it was just a bit too simple to make it higher in my RD, and frankly this overstayed some time ago.... I cleared my bottom 45 with this one leaving.

24. Jack and Diane (23): Almost-Perfect ranking! LOL. It made the yearend top 35 back home, and has had good recurrent airplay. I really liked the instrumentation, although the claps sometimes are a bit too much depending on the mood The life goes on is one of the catchiest, sing-along pop-rich choruses of the 80s, and the drums and the "let it roll" outro are pure 80s bliss too.

23. Harden My Heart (20): Nooo... the wrong female-led sophistipop hit left first This is what a gorgeous, sexy, moody saxophone sounds like (clearly inspiring Carly Rae and others...) and what smokey, heartbroken but powerful vocals are. Another key member of my sunset soundtrack songs, with great 80s memories.

22. Vacation (3): WTF?!!! I was afraid this would leave too early... This was one of my favorite songs in 1982 and my love for it has grown even further with time. Such a high-energy, fun, party rock song, with great music, melody and vocals. The piano, drums, guitars combo is outstanding. I've used this song A LOT in long drives to keep my energy going. Plus it has lots of great memories from summer vacations when I was a kid. By far, my favorite Go-Go's song. Pretty sad to have another second top 5 loss :'(

21. Kids in America (22): Even though it's almost a Perfect Ranking, I'm bummed it didn't make the top 20, especially considering a couple of songs that are still around. Another high-energy rock pop song, with great production, melody, instrumentation that mixes rock with synth pop, and with great use of male backing vocals. This was actually one of the top 20 hits of 1981 back home.

#30. Let It Whip - The Dazz Band
This is the kind of R&B/Funk flava I enjoyed most. Most songs with the word "whip" in them are good.

#29. Gloria - Laura Branigan
Crazy enough I'm the lowest ranker for this one, but I still really like it. A little simple in melody maybe, but it had a nice melody. So much that a few Italo NRG songs followed in the years ahead.

#28. Eye In The Sky - The Alan Parsons Project
This is my favorite song by this band. Just misses my top half. This has a really pleasant melody.

#27. 867-5309/Jenny - Tommy Tutone
Classic song. My ranking for this song was more like billboard's just one slot higher. I feel all the best melodies were used up in the 80's.

#26. Get Down On It - Kool & The Gang
Another classic Kool & The Gang song. I would say this one, "Celebrate and "Ladies Night are my favorites. "Ladie's Night" being the crown champion of course.

#25. We Got The Beat - The Go-Go's
The most Punk of the Go-Go's classics. This one falls for me inbetween "vacation" and "our Lips Are Sealed"

#24. Jack & Diane - John Cougar
You know I'm gonna put John Cougar high on my list. !982 one of the most Rock vibed years in music history. I love these songs that told stories. "Young Turks" and "Living On A Prayer" had that same great story telling vibe in the lyrics. Favorite part? The drums at mid point.

#23. Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
Another great rock band that added some brass in their songs. I also charted "Find Another Fool" with that great sax solo, and "Nightshift" from the Winkler/Keaton movie of the same name.

#22. Vacation - The Go-Go's
This is such a perfect Party beach song.

#21. Kids In America - Kim Wilde
Kim's sole Billboard top 100 hit v.s. my 10+ times I've charted her. I believe this is probably one of her best singles. The song has that certain rebellious vibe coming out of English New Wave. Billy Idol and Adam Ant also had it. This true New Wave vibe sounded right at home in 1982.

* The top 20 is looking tasty. At this point I'd say only a couple of those feel over stayed, but I'm very pleased you guys have let Loverboy into the top 20. It doesn't even matter if it comes in at #20 it's all about Hard Rock making it's stand in these Rank downs.

*To reach a top 20 in any of these music rank downs and for my top 10 to be more than half intact means I'm a true 80's Warrior.

I'll share a few BIG songs back home from 1981 (which I missed sharing in the 1981 RD) and 1982.

- Margherita (Massara): One of my favorite Italo-disco songs of all time. That yellow and white 45 RPM has been the single from 1981 that I've played the most. I loved the percussion-driven bridge about 'felicità', the brassy musical bridge, and the overall beat, as well as the melancholic melody. It ended in the top 25 of 1981 back home, and it's remained one of my favorite dance songs of the 1980s.


- Hands Up (Ottawan): A yearend top 10 back home in 1981 and another 45 RPM (black one) that I played a lot in my childhood. It's had good recurrent airplay, including because a Spanish version was recorded for TV's most popular kids show back home. Super catchy and uplifting song that still brings a smile to my face


- Disco Deewane (Nazia Hassan): Such a rarity for a Pakistani song to become a hit in Latin America, but yeah this happened, and DD was one of the top 15 hits of 1981. I still love its nostalgic vibe, unique sound and vocals. Another song with lots of good memories.


- In Your Letter (REO Speedwagon): Another yearend top 30 back home. I LOVED the piano bridge as well as the overall high energy pop-rock beat, the main IYL melody and the harmonies. Another song with pretty good childhood memories...


- Start Me Up (The Rolling Stones): One of the top 20s of 1981 and one of the RS songs with more recurrent airplay back home. One of my favorite RS songs as well, with lot of sassy, funky, rocky attitude. Why on Earth this didn't make any yearend Hot 100 chart??


- Tonight I’m Yours (Rod Stewart): So very much 80s! Piano, guitar, claps and bells included lol. And of course a sexy, colorful video :) One of the top 5 songs of 1982 back home. And yet another Rod song that I really like from that time (like Passion, Baby Jane and Young Turks). I was surprised to learn that it barely reached the top 20 in the Hot 100.


- Ma Quale Idea / Que Idea (Pino D'Angio): I loved the 80s because there were so many unique, random types of hits, like this one. A talk-singing song by a guy with a deep voice? That included a rapid-fire pre-chorus with high-pitch backing vocals? And coming from Italy? Sounded so random -but it worked!! I've always loved this song: the Italo-disco vibe, the bass, synths and overall production sounded almost ahead of its time. It's a super fun pop song... and I LOVED that the world (re-)discovered it thanks to Madison Avenue's Don't Call Me Baby. Que Idea (its Spanish version) made the yearend top 10 back home.


- Heart Attack (Olivia Newton-John): I wasn't a big fan of this song at the beginning, but then I appreciated the extra energy and attitude and the dynamic music (sax and synths) and vocals. It ended up being a big hit back home, making the yearend top 15. Another case of a weekly top 5 that didn't make any of the Hot 100's yearend charts. I would've ranked this much higher than Make a Move...


- Spirits in the Material World (The Police): One of my favorite uptempo songs by The Police. It would've been in my top 10 in this RD, as I still love the beat, vocals and melody. The chorus is quite catchy, but I love the musical bridge even more, followed by the verses.


- I Wanna Be Where You Are / Ahora Si Quiero Amar (Jose Feliciano): It was only in the late 90s that I learned that this had originally been recorded by The Jackson 5. Back home, THIS is the ultimate version of this song. An early 80s classic. I really like the Spanish disco vibe of this version, with the Spanish guitar bridge and Jose's distinct vocals and ad-libs in the final minute. This ended up in the yearend top 10.

Just a slight correction to this, "I Wanna Be Where You Are" was a solo Michael Jackson recording, not The Jackson 5. Jackson took it to No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972.
