So he's predicting 12 Ari tracks inside the top 40? That would be wild. If "Shallow" responds even more to the Oscars it might return to the top 10. Very nice run when you consider the fact that radio collapsed a month ago. You think it will be able to move 17 to 14 spots?? Probably will, but with radio dead on the song, might be a battle. It re-entered top 20 a couple weeks ago with 49k sales and no radio. If the Oscars take it to the next level, let's say 80k, it might have a chance.

POP 43 27 FLETCHER Undrunk 2363 896 1467 10.381 + 241 spins + 85 bullet + 0.707 audience ... This has got to be the most blunt case of radio payola I've seen in a while. They truly deserve to be completely removed from the Hot 100 formula.

FLETCHER’s “Undrunk” Is the Post-Breakup Anthem You Didn’t Know You Needed image
While New Jersey-native FLETCHER is not new to the music scene, she is officially ready to make her name known. Cari Fletcher, a graduate of New York University’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music, has already performed at various notable festivals. Among them, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Life Is Beautiful. With more than 100-million streams and three features on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist under her belt, FLETCHER is now ready to make her Capitol Records debut with “Undrunk.”
Pulling from her experiences with love and heartbreak as a college student in New York City, the single is vulnerable, highly relatable and catchy. With rich vocals and authentic lyrics, the single is the perfect anthem for modern-day breakups.
We’re accustomed to hearing songs about the mistakes and emotions that surround relationships, but FLETCHER puts a twist on the stereotype of breakup songs and sings in present-tense of the mistakes she wishes she could undo. She sings,
“I wish I could un-kiss the room full of strangers / so I could un-spite you, un-lose my temper / but somethings you can’t undo / and one of them’s you”
Produced by Malay, whose collaborations include Frank Ocean and Lorde, the song features the ingredients for a breakout hit and offers a refreshing yet poignant take on heartbreak.

I was driving to work this past weekend and my local station was talking about this new artist named Fletcher and that they are playing "her hot new track Undrunk every hour on the hour," and I had no clue what was going on. Like hot where? No offense to Fletcher but the song is no one to be seen on iTunes or any streaming platform. No new artist with no previous radio support or singles is getting this type of push without the label paying the stations to play it.

Being the On The Verge artist likely helps to some degree, but not this much. She's currently only in the Top 500 on iTunes.

Regardless Removal from the Hot 100 formula just cause it seems weird would not be right. Sometimes it is about whatever it takes to get noticed. Methods to do that evolve from time to time.
Ariana Grande or Maroon 5's chart positions are probably safe from this for the time being anyway - so nothing to worry about

Just your trillionth reminder that exchanging money for radio play is illegal. There are plenty of work arounds and incentives, but direct "payola" doesn't exist.
The Fletcher situation almost certainly is some sort of long term radio deal like On the Verge mixed with an extremely heavy radio promotional campaign. My guess is Fletcher knows some higher ups and networked her ass off and did some favors (read: performance slots/tickets/interviews/grunt work NOT cash or sex).
This isn't any different than a live TV performance, Today's Top Hits placement, viral marketing, or discounting the digital track. Just another promotional endeavor that doesn't have a huge impact. If the track doesn't click with listeners, it won't go very far. If it does but never translates into streams and sales, it won't chart high anyway.

Looks like Ariana might miss 4 top tens. Simm always likes to underestimate though, so would not be surprised if Needy manages to sneak in.

Was not expecting Happier to hold onto the Top 3 To be fair, Without Me and Happier are 4 points apart, well within the error margin for his predictions. I would think it's even likelier for Happier to be #4, as the fortnite effect seems to be wearing off and it's declining across the board.

Drake is re-releasing So Far Gone on streaming tomorrow. I wonder how it’ll perform Imagine Best I Ever Had hitting #1. I would love that. It's a brilliant song. And if I recall correctly it was blocked by one of the biggest songs of all time. But I hope that doesn't happen (and I know there's a 99.9999% chance it won't) because it would make me feel old.

What are the rules on songs from SFG possibly charting? Over top 50? It depends on whether the songs have already charted or not and how they long they charted for.

'Baby Shark' Debuts in Billboard Hot 100's Top 40
1/8/2019 by Kevin RutherfordThe viral children's song, which spawned a dance challenge following the release of Pinkfong's 2016 version, bows at No. 32. Another viral dance challenge has sparked a placement on the Billboard Hot 100, as Pinkfong's "Baby Shark" debuts at No. 32 on the list dated Jan. 12. Some background for the uninitiated: "Baby Shark," whose origins date back decades, is a participatory children's song/nursery rhyme in which singers act out each verse with their hands and arms, from the eponymous youngest member of a family to the parents and grandparents. In 2016, Pinkfong, a South Korea-based educational brand, created its version of the song and a subsequent video that has been the basis for the track's meme status. The so-called Baby Shark Challenge finds participants dancing along to the song and mimicking its commands when applicable, with social media services and the app TikTok among the hotbeds of activity for the challenge. Initially going viral in Indonesia, "Baby Shark" spread globally before entering U.S. waters, beginning with its debut on the Kid Digital Song Sales chart in July 2018. It made its first appearance on the Streaming Songs chart in November. Now, thanks to the song's continued streaming growth as well as the freefall of 23 seasonal titles off the Hot 100 this week post-holidays, "Baby Shark" bows at No. 32. (Given its original 2016 release date, the song needed to accumulate enough chart points to appear in the Hot 100's top 50 before it was eligible to chart, per chart rules regarding older songs.)In the latest streaming tracking week, ending Jan. 3, "Baby Shark" earned 20.8 million streams, according to Nielsen Music, good for a new No. 16 peak on Streaming Songs. Of that sum, video views continue to be a major driver of the song's success: 73 percent. While the data that feeds Streaming Songs is U.S.-based, thanks to the track's worldwide popularity, "Baby Shark" has attracted 2.1 billion global views on YouTube to date, ranking it among the 30 most-viewed videos in the platform's history. While streaming is the main catalyst for the song's Hot 100 entrance, "Baby Shark" also moved 3,000 digital downloads in the tracking week. It places at No. 2 on Kid Digital Song Sales, which it led for 11 weeks, beginning in September. As previously reported, Halsey earns her first Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist, as "Without Me" ascends to the summit.

There has been exceptions for this rule. Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" debuted at #59 in 2016, the same week Pentatonix's version was #56.
