I could see Maren Morris taking the Kacey Musgraves spot for AOTY category and hopefully Taylor's new album sneaks in there.

I don't get why the Grammys wouldn't be able to air after the Oscars but OK.

Maren has been a Grammys Favorite. She has lots of nominations with only one album released and “The Middle” was nominated last Grammys.

I don't get why the Grammys wouldn't be able to air after the Oscars but OK. The only seeming reason for it is some fixed idea that you save the 'best' (or biggest, at least) for last, and the Oscars has always been viewed as the best/biggest show of them all. But I really don't get why it matters....it's not like they're the same industry.

If the Grammys liked Lorde in 2014, I'm sure Billie is gonna get even more awards this year.

With 14 Weeks Atop Hot 100, Will Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' Get Any Grammy Love?
7/8/2019 by Paul Grein
Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Stagecoach Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas X pose backstage during the 2019 Stagecoach Festival at Empire Polo Field on April 28, 2019 in Indio, Calif. The big question is whether Grammy voters will see the hit as a jokey novelty like "Macarena" or a trend-setting, genre-bridging collab like "Despacito."
As Billboard's Gary Trust reported, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus) is just the 10th single in the history of the Hot 100 to log 14 or more weeks at No. 1. So does this mean it's a sure thing to land a Grammy nomination for record of the year?
Not quite, but it will be hard to ignore. Of the nine previous singles to log 14 or more weeks at No. 1, all but two were nominated for record of the year. The two that fell short were Los Del Rios' "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)," which was widely seen as a novelty, and Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997"/"Something About the Way You Look Tonight."
"Candle in the Wind 1997" was a live version of a classic song that had already been recognized by Grammy voters (in 1987, when a previous live version was nominated for best pop vocal performance, male). The 1997 live version was eligible for record of the year, but the Nominations Review Committee, which determines the final nominees in the Big Four categories, apparently thought it would be better to put the spotlight on new material. Elton's smash won for best male pop vocal performance.
Two of the singles that logged 14 or more weeks at No. 1 won the Grammy for record of the year: Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!" (featuring Bruno Mars).
Five others were nominated but came up short. Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love to You" lost to Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do." This was a reversal of the songs' fortunes on the Hot 100, where Crow's smash had peaked at No. 2 for six weeks behind "I'll Make Love to You."
Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" lost to Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" (which spent one week at No. 1); Carey's "We Belong Together" lost to Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (which peaked at No. 2 for five weeks); the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" lost to Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" (which peaked at No. 4); Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" (featuring Justin Bieber) lost to Mars' "24K Magic" (which peaked at No. 4).
The big question is whether Grammy voters will be more inclined to see "Old Town Road" as a jokey novelty like "Macarena" or as a trend-setting, genre-bridging collabo like "Despacito." The answer to that question may well seal its Grammy fate in the marquee categories.
Even if "Old Town Road" is passed over for a record of the year nom, it could be nominated for a performance award -- either best rap/sung performance or best pop duo/group performance. In addition, Lil Nas X will be eligible for best new artist.

I was wondering the same thing if they would give him ROTY next year. With "This Is America" win this year, I'm curious if the committee will start to fully embraced hip-hop artist (I think). I still haven't heard "Old Town Road" in full, but the success is incredible.

I can see it getting a handful of nods and a Rap/Sung award, but maybe not winning the big ones. Considering it's his first single they'll probably go with someone a bit more established. They still try to pretend like they're not just rewarding hit records lol.

I think "Old Town Road" will probably have the same fate as "Despacito"... some major noms but no win.

Likely won’t happen but I’d love for Madame X to get some recognition. It’s stronger and more ambitious than the typical pop album so I hope it at least gets a nomination in that field

Speaking of Lizzo, how are the Grammys going to handle Truth Hurts? Will it be deemed ineligible based on its release date, or will they grant it an exception since it didn't become prominent until this year? I really hope the latter is the case. You linked back to this thread, lol. THE NEW CHEW: GRAMMY ON RYENo Paul Grein this time; Lenny Beer and Simon Glickman are the writers on deck for this one. It seems to be a requirement for every HDD staff member who talks Grammys to be too hyperbolic though. Like for the ASIB soundtrack, they say, "Given the vast cultural impact of the film—which has grown still further since it became available on demand—expect the set to get a big look from Grammy gatekeepers, both for showstopping moments like “Always Remember Us This Way” and “I’ll Never Love Again” and as a complete work." ASIB will certainly receive a Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media nomination/win, but 'a big look' is a big stretch. At most I could see Gaga snatching a pop solo spot based on her name, and even that is not really a strong bet. Nothing after Shallow really got the level of attention that would warrant the expectation of multiple nods. I do think they're not far off at all with Senorita and Dancing With a Stranger, I see those two songs faring well in nominations. The rest of the article focuses on critical darling types ( Kurt a Maggie Rogers shoutout!) and it's always harder to predict what voters will do with those, but I appreciate that Beer and Glickman actually bothered to acknowledge they exist. Grein would never.

I think whether Shawn and Camila get a nomination will depend on the song's longevity, although the Grammy's seem to like Shawn (see: that random In My Blood nomination last year???). I agree about ASIB as well. I'm sure it'll snatch some nominations but to me, a win seems unlikely just because of how long ago it feels now, I can't imagine how stale it's going to feel in early 2020.

She could probably get in if she really wanted it and put in the effort to win people over. But at this stage in her career it is doubtful that Mariah would actively network and campaign for votes - you can nominate her on her merits or you can not - and she already was never strongly connected within those inner Grammy circles as it was. She was routinely snubbed at her '90s peak, handed a few awards off-air for her '00s peak, and hasn't been nominated for her own material since DFAU in 2007 (and I believe that might be the last time she bothered attending too now that I think about it...she hardly even goes to the parties I think?). I was looking for another post of mine, came across this one, and it really just sank in to my head that Mariah has not been honored on a Grammy stage since 1991. That is some wild shit. What if "OTR" goes there? Lol. Anyway what is the competition? "Please Me" could go there as well. And "Sunflower." Seeing what Columbia tries to do with OTR (and how the committees handle that) will be fun. I don't think it will end up in pop though. Please Me should and will be submitted to rap/sung, which would probably be the case even if it had become a pop radio hit, but almost definitely will be the case since it didn't. (Other potential scenario is Cardi landing a much bigger collab hit before deadline and Please Me not getting submitted anywhere.) Maybe gabe just meant DWAS is a lock for a nomination, not necessarily a win? Although off the top of my head, there isn't much competition for it right now - I think DWAS, Close To Me, Sucker, Sunflower, and This Feeling are the only eligible collaborations to even reach top 10 on pop this year; This Feeling was barely a hit, and Sunflower might go to rap/sung (solo Post Malone would get rejected by the rap committee, but they were fine with accepting Rockstar in that category). Last year was extremely weird with BSB, Christina, and Tony Bennett all getting nominations, but I can't think of anything this year that might pull a similar surprise nod. Maybe the summer will bring more to compete with. Okay, summer is here and it's given us just a few more pop collab contenders: Senorita I Don't Care Bad Guy remix Goodbyes (I don't see Post's team submitting two songs here, so either Sunflower or Goodbyes is going to be submitted to rap/sung) It's weird how it feels like we've been drowned in collaborations this year, but so many of them have been underwhelming to me. I still can't think of any potential left-field nominations that might jump in here, unless Kygo decides to submit Higher Love to pop collab instead of dance recording.
