What did Ed have that was similar level? The title track sounds similar to "Thinking Out Loud" and "Perfect" to me. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like the type of ballad that would have been a lock for a nomonation a few years ago. Don't ruin it.....! But I definitely don't hear that. Lover sounds much more dreamy and atmospheric whereas those two Ed songs are straight up guitar pop songs. Lover is closer in sound to Already Gone than it is Perfect.

Perfect probably wouldve been nominated if it was the original version and if Ed hadn't pissed off the voters when he didn't show up at the 2018 grammys.

Perfect probably wouldve been nominated if it was the original version and if Ed hadn't pissed off the voters when he didn't show up at the 2018 grammys.Do we know for a fact the latter happened? 2018 was lowkey a very 'political' year with the venue wars going on behind the scenes; in light of that, industry peeps might not have been as soured by his no-show as some of us Grammy observers were. I think the fact that the duet version isn't the version that was a hit was the biggest drawback there. He might have fared better with a live or acoustic recording in pop solo.

Perfect was released on 2017 September.26. Also its own album already won album category. so the original can't be nominated. I doubt that grammy voters care about someone attending that much.
perfect duet's problem was more about it being too old for 2019 grammy and no hype/buzz/promotion during 2019 grammy. it was released on 2017 November and Ed already won pop solo/Album (which includes original) at 2018 Grammy. so after his big moment 2018 grammy is over, voters obviously thought it's time to move on.

Whether voters like Ed again or not, we'll find out soon enough. I'd expect at the very least one of the tracks from his collab album to snatch a Pop collab nomination (they're probably gonna play it safe and go for "I Don't Care").
Considering the very weak field, his album showing up on Pop album and maybe even AOTY wouldn't be completely shocking, although an AOTY nomination in particular I don't really see happening for this project.

The Perfect snub isn't that surprising in hindsight. Voters are less likely going to vote for a remix from an album they already rewarded. If Perfect was a new single not from the album, he gets in everywhere.
We should have saw it coming.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=317680&title=HIP-HOP-AND-R%26B-GRAMMY-FAVORITESMonday, August 26, 2019 HIP-HOP AND R&B GRAMMY FAVORITESby Michelle Santosuosso With the 8/31 Grammy eligibility deadline nearly upon us, and with a majority of the streaming market still being dominated by hip-hop and R&B, here are some releases from potential nominees destined to be buzzed about in the committee process. Now, does any of this matter with the biggest hit record of all time, Lil Nas Xβs βOld Town Road,β in contention? Or does that songβs otherworldly success segue it immediately to pop and shut it out of all the black music categories? This is a question for the always-unpredictable Grammy committees. Letβs check out some main contenders: Tyler, The Creator f/Playboi Carti, βEarfquakeβ (Columbia): Tylerβs fifth studio album, IGOR, was a shrewd, stylistic leap from his previous solo efforts, and he let his core fans know that up front, warning them ahead of release, βDonβt go into this expecting a rap album.β What he did deliver, however, was a level of ingenuity and skill on par with his musical hero, Pharrell Williams. βEarfquake,β which was originally composed for Justin Bieber (who passed) and pitched to Rihanna (who also passed), gave him his first notable radio hit. Tyler is not just one of the most, he is THE MOST consistently forward-thinking, sonically revolutionary creative of his generation, and he should be recognized for this song and the album as a whole. Khalid βTalkβ (RCA): With this artfully composed gem already destined to be a timeless R&B song, Khalid could very well walk home with a Grammy in 2020, after being nominated for his first five trophies in 2018, including Best New Artist, Best R&B Song (βLocationβ) and Song of the Year for his work with Logic on β1-800-273-8255.β He is simply best in class both on and off the recordβarranging a benefit concert to help victims of the mass shooting in his hometown of El Paso on 9/1 should have him quite top of mind during the nomination cycle. But he deserves a win and should get it this year, for all that βTalk.β Post Malone f/Swae Lee, βSunflowerβ (Republic): Post Malone has been a bit controversial for his lack of enthusiasm to be designated by what heβs clearly influenced fromβblack musicβbut this song, a spectacular collaboration that rightfully became a massive hit, deserves a nod for its R&B roots. Not to mention, Malone may be competing with himself on another eligible smashβthe arguably even more urban-sounding βWow.β J. Cole, βMiddle Childβ (Dreamville/Interscope): Cole kicked off 2019 with a brutally honest, lyrically potent commentary about being caught between two divergent generations of hip-hop (hence the reference to being the βmiddle childβ). The first single from Dreamvilleβs 2019 compilation album, Revenge of the Dreamers III, it was one of Coleβs biggest streaming and airplay hits to date. But more importantly, the song accurately sums up the cultureβs evolutionary struggle in the SoundCloud and streaming era and the difficulty older rappers have understanding their young peers. That sentiment will resonate with a slew of Grammy voters. DaBaby βSugeβ (Interscope): This standout artist has a distinctive style that has already set him apart on his debut album, Baby on Baby: Heβs hyper, aggressive, funny and charismatic but dead-serious at the same time. He busts out on beats like a racehorseβexploding from the gate with the utmost intensity and a winning pace, then sustaining that clip through the whole songβon tracks that rarely hit the three-minute mark, another component of the new style in rap. On this breakout track, the Charlotte native aspires to follow in the legendary and notorious footsteps of Death Row Recordsβ Suge Knight, who became CEO of the label in 1991 when he was just 26 years old, one year younger than DaBaby when he made this song. Normani, βDancing With a Strangerβ with Sam Smith (RCA/Capitol), and βMotivationβ (Keep Cool/RCA): Last August at the MTV Video Music Awards, Nicki Minaj let us all know that βNormani is THAT bitch!β in defense of a joke host Tiffany Haddish had made about Fifth Harmony, but it was prophetic nonetheless. Less than five months later, Normani was featured on Smithβs new single, a critical and commercial powerhouse Top 10 track. That success vaulted the 23-year-old singer into the mainstream and set up her next flawless move, the recently released earworm βMotivation,β accompanied by an unforgettable music video featuring eye-popping choreography with a basketball that is already iconic. Watch for Normani to be a serious contender for a Best New Artist nomination, along with noms for the collaboration with Smith, as she has indeed proven to be βthat bitch.β Summer Walker βGirls Need Loveβ (Remix) f/Drake (LVRN/Interscope): Walkerβs spectacular debut studio album, Last Day of Summer, was launched with this song as its lead single in the fall of 2018, but it took the 2019 remix featuring Drizzy to crash through the gatekeepers at playlisting and radio, who were ALL sleeping on one of the best singer/songwriters in modern soul. An artist who puts her raw emotions and original vocal stylings on full display in her music (a quality that TDEβs SZA was championed for just a year earlier) Summer Walker is vulnerable, versatile and a very real voice for the ages. Bruno Mars & Cardi B, βPlease Meβ (Atlantic): Reminiscent of those extra-saucy β90s R&B joints, this collabβproduced by The Stereotypes, with a topline written by James Fauntleroyβwas an explosion of dope with a video to match, and one of the highlights of 2019. With both artists already being multiple Grammy winners, this is a probably a shoo-in for every R&B category this year. Lizzo, βTruth Hurtsβ (Atlantic): βAnthemβ is the keyword here, and Lizzo has an entire generation shouting that chorus at the tops of their lungs. But she backs it up with every electrifying live performance she gives, which has long been the spark of greatness igniting artist longevity. Artists on the cusp who could walk away with Grammy nods: RosalΓa, βAute Cutureβ (Columbia): This artist is dynamically crossing over from her Spanish-language base to the mainstream following collaborations with international stars like J Balvin, Pharrell Williams, James Blake and soon, Billie Eilish. This track, which followed her 2019 reggaeton-celebrating Balvin collab, βCon Altura,β is a mocking take on high fashion that namechecks brands and features tongue-in-cheek lyrics like βHands in the air if youβve ever been ripped off.β Regardless of tone, however, RosalΓa is one of the most exciting and unique voices in all of music, and language barriers will not contain her impending superstardom. Steve Lacy, βN Sideβ (AWAL): A force to be reckoned with in R&B, Lacy is already an accomplished producer/collaborator (Solange, J. Cole, Vampire Weekend) and the guitarist/bassist for the future-forward R&B collective The Internet (Columbia), who sprang from the endlessly ingenious Odd Future community. But his debut solo album, Apollo XXI, was a funky, psychedelic work of trippy excellence that was reminiscent of early Prince records, demonstrating the crazy talent level Lacy has for his own vibes. Heβll no doubt follow Frank Oceanβs footsteps in pushing forward the genre in a fascinating way and could be a surprise Alternative R&B contender. Anderson .Paak f/Smokey Robinson, βMake It Betterβ (Aftermath/12Tone): This single from the Ventura album pairs a critically acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who is on the outer edges of R&B with his quirky, jazzy interpretations of the genre with a Motown icon and legendβand the result is soulful and powerful. Look for the committee to recognize this work, even if radio and playlisters missed its merits.

BeyoncΓ©: Her Homecoming was an event and a distillation of everything that makes her a goddess. Will the Academy give this set its due even though itβs a live album? Ask Peter Frampton. Where's that drake stan? me?

"Sunflower" and "Dancing with a Stranger" are great choices... for Pop Collaboration. And Normani is not eligible for BNA, either. JFC, do they huff paint thinner before writing these pieces?! I will give them 1.5 small caveats. They were dumb for referring to Sunflower as "r&b," but it could theoretically be submitted to rap/sung while Goodbyes is sent to pop collaboration. They also may have only been mentioning DWAS in passing to explain how it opened up the door for Motivation to start off so strongly. I can't give them a full caveat for the latter though bc RCA itself categorized Motivation as pop, so they're probably going to aim for pop solo with that and submit Waves to the r&b categories.

Panic! just released "High Hopes (Live)", hopefully it will get some noms, like Best Pop-Duo Group Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.

When are submissions usually released? Ah can't wait how many nominations ASIB gets! Is it eligible for AOTY despite "Shallow" winning last year?

Shallow was released before the submission date last year but the album wasn't so everything else from the album and the album itself is eligible this year.
However, Shallow being awarded already can't see ASIB getting several awards but some noms and maybe one award perhaps...

The first round of voting takes place September 25 to October 10, so submissions will (hopefully) leak then. The Grammys never releases them so someone with access to a ballot has to smuggle them out to us peons. Nominations are being announced Nov. 20 this year.

I heard that the person who usually leaks the list isn't voting this year so there will be no list, at least from that person. Hopefully one of the other 5000 voters is a popgirl fan and releases the list for us internet stans.

Throwing Sheryl Crow's new album into the mix. Between her and all of the featured artists, I bet if they all put their Grammys together, there would be hundreds.

If there's any justice, Lana will pull a Lorde/Melodrama and land that critical acclaim AOTY nomination. She is beyond overdue for some big nominations.

With how weak of a year this has been for albums, I think we might actually see two soundtracks in the final 8 nominees. My current guesses:
-Billie Eilish, βWWAFAWDWG?β -Lizzo, βCuz I Love Youβ -Ariana Grande, βthank u, nextβ -The Lion King -A Star is Born -Sheryl Crow, βThreadsβ -Lana Del Rey, βNorman Fucking Rockwellβ -Taylor Swift, βLoverβ
A very female-centric year, on top of it all.

Lana's new album just lazily steamrolled over every other female album release this year outside of Lizzo. If those two women aren't nominated for AOTY fuck the Grammy's. Ariana, Billie, Taylor, and Gaga can take any remaining spots after those two--ideally in that order.

I agree with this, my wildcards are Maggie Rogers, HOMECOMING and Carly Rae... men really gave us no great albums this year but let's throw in IGOR which was sort of enjoyable for a week or two.
