I’m surprised that the rankings from the individual year rankdowns aren’t holding up, I thought Land of Confusion would be out much before U Got the Look considering LOC was #10 for 1987 while UGTL was #3 I noticed that too. There may be some participants here who did not submit for that individual year RD. Also, some others mentioned that they grew to like (or dislike) a song even more only after a second listen for the decade RD.

At the rate we're going, I'm probably going to be playing the role of "spoiler" as opposed to my usual doing really well in these 80s RDs.
I'm kind of looking forward to it, should it happen.

I feel a bit better. I'm down to 5 bottom 10s left after the departure of I can't Go for That.
The biggest loss of this run was Heartbreaker which I thought was Pat Benatar's second best song. Her best is somewhere in my top 30.
The rest are decent songs, sure, but when you combine the best of the best (plus a few others), you're bound to lose some good songs.
PS: I hope my #100 doesn't stay in the top 10 like it did in its year.

80. Heartbreaker (39): Ehmmmm... Excuse me??!! This is far too low for such a good rock song. Really. This is sooooo much better than Hit Me With Your Best Shot that I can't even... The energy, strong instrumentation, her outstanding lead AND backing vocals (that last pre-chorus is HEAVEN!), plus that combination of strong verses and more subdued chorus, make this a pretty strong song. I even admit that I under-ranked it in the 1980 RD (#21), but I corrected myself this time and I practically considered this my #3 of 1980 for this RD.
79. Land of Confusion (80): This was my second favorite song of Genesis back in the day, and I'm still a fan, but there are just a lot of songs I consider better than this...
78. Smooth Operator (57): ... like this one. This is such a different type of song with its more jazzy vibe, with great melody, vocals, and instrumentation. Super classy and timeless. Deserved ending up a bit higher.
77. What Have I Done To Deserve This? (33): The f_ck!! What's happening? This is my 3rd top 40 loss so far. Not nice. Just like Sade's, I find this as super classy and timeless, a kinda sophistipop song that I still enjoy a lot. Plus Dusty did a great job.
76. I Can't Go For That (41): Oh well. This is a pretty good song as well, but I'm not too surprised it's left here. I wish Maneater had made it, as I like that one more than this one.
So as of this bottom quarter of the RD, I've lost 13 of my bottom quarter (good!), and 6 top 50s. Not bad, but I was hoping that one of my bottom 3 were already gone...

LATIN SPOTLIGHT: MIGUEL BOSE
He was born in the spotlight. His dad was Luis Dominguin, a famous Spanish bullfighter, and his mom was Lucia Bose, 1947 Miss Italy. His career started at 21 with the minor hit Linda in 1977 --but it was in 1980 when he had his breakout as a bubble pop star with huge popularity in the Hispanic world, and the beginning of one of the most prolific and revered careers of an artist singing in Spanish, and member of the LGTBQ community.
His 4th album Miguel, released in 1980, included 3 big hits that would become classics of the entire decade. "Don Diablo" was a fun, Latin party type of song, a bit silly but simply careless fun. (Think about an early version of All Night Long.) Its low-budget, sorta kitschy performance video would become a classic, and primarily because of the way he danced and performed, the music and video back home would always be associated with gay imagery.
"Morir de Amor" (To Die of Love) also became a big hit in 1980, showing a more adult pop type of sound and vocals. And once again, his dancing in the video for better or worse would be considered very gay back home...
The 3rd single and biggest hit this era was the ballad "Te Amare" (I'll Love You), which may be a bit too cheesy now, but I still have a soft spot to it, as I had the 45 rpm with this song as the A side and Don Diablo as the B side.
His next two eras were a bit of a commercial disappointment as they didn't reach the heights of popularity of the Miguel era. The 1981 lead single Marchate Ya was a very minor rock-pop hit and seen as trying too hard. The 1983 lead single "Fuego" (Fire) showed a more mature sound (more electropop) and image (even showing some skin in a real video), but it flopped.
Then in 1984, after the underperformance of his previous eras, Miguel Bose decided to take control of his career, with a 180 in terms of music, image and vocals (using a lower tone), to destroy his childish image. With his album Bandido, Miguel turned things around and earned both critical acclaim and commercial success. Back home, the first hit was "Horizonte de las Estrellas" (Stars Horizon) a high-energy electro pop hit with strings, piano, synths, guitars and his most dynamic vocals thus far. It reached the top of the charts and made my personal yearend top 10 in Spanish.
The second hit was an even bigger success. Completely inescapable both in radio and TV, "Amante Bandido" (Bandit Lover) was a huge hit throughout Latin America. Less electro and more Latin pop, with a delicious combination of percussion and brass sounds, and quite sexy manly vocals. This would become his signature song (he would release a new version in 1999 that would also become a hit). Personally, this is my favorite MB song, followed closely by Horizonte...
Another important single this era was "Sevilla", a more Spanish sounding type of song that would not be as big of a hit as the other two singles, but would remain a favorite among his fans. (Count me as a fan!)
He continued experimenting with his next album Salamandra, with more electro pop / sophistipop sounds with singles like "Nena" and "Aire Soy" that although not as successful back home they were quite popular in other parts of Latin America (never as popular as the Bandit hits though). The next era XXX would see him push even further his sound and imagery. This time he got A-Ha and Naked Eyes producer Tony Mansfield to work on his singles, with an attempt for a crossover. His lead single "Como Un Lobo" was also released in English as "Lay Down on Me" and played in MTV. Unfortunately, he didn't make it, but his reputation as an artist kept reaching new heights. Back home, this wasn't a hit either. (I discovered and fell in love with the song in the early 90s.)
Miguel Bose is another icon of the music in Spanish, and his great evolution in the 1980s was something that was great to witness. Personally, he has 4 songs in my top 100 songs in Spanish of the 80s, and a couple very close to that tier.

Only 1983 and 1984 remain with all of their songs still in it. I wonder which of these years will be the first take a hit. There is one song in particular from 1983 that I wouldn't mind leaving soon.

LATIN SPOTLIGHT: MECANO
This is another case of a Spanish artist that showed a tremendous evolution in the 1980s, to great commercial success, international popularity, and critical recognition --and with an LGBT+ connection along the way. Mecano is a trio of brothers Ignacio and Jose Maria Cano and Jose Maria's former girlfriend Ana Torroja, formed around 1979-80. Being fans of British synthpop, when searching for a name of the group with their label, they were inspired by the name The Human League... playing around with the brothers' last names they went for Mecano Humano (Human Meccano), then shortened to Mecano. Their 1981 melodic techno-pop debut single " Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar" (Now I Cannot Wake Up) ended up being a big hit in Spain and Latinamerica, with its fun party vibe. The followup to Hoy... was not as popular, but generated enough success to convince the label to release an album including the first two singles and of course many more songs. " Me Cole En Una Fiesta" (I Crashed A Party) was the third single and it became a HUGE hit in Spain and Latinamerica in 1982. Back home in Peru was one of the biggest songs of the year and undoubtedly one of the most popular and classic hits of the decade. The uptempo synthpop with some melancholic vibe and Ana's vocals and the brothers' backing vocals made for a great combination. Also interesting is their initial flirting with the LGBT+ community. Ana's androgyne image was paired with her singing lyrics written by Ignacio from a male perspective, without changing the gender, so they could easily be interpreted as reflecting same-sex sexual orientation. Mecano also recorded an English version to try to conquer the UK market, although without much success. Mecano's first single was yet another big hit, " Maquillaje" (Makeup), an interesting song with quite rapid rock verses and more melodic synthpop choruses. Back home it was another classic of the 80s. They released a couple more albums in the same vein of synthpop, although their lyrics started to evolve from focusing on fun and parties to others about hyper-industrialization in Japan, consumerism, and Cold War. Their next project was a live album that included a B-side of their 3rd album that became a minor hit in some countries in Latinamerica and a cult song among fans, as it showed the first glimpses of their musical evolution in both lyrics (about suicide) and sound (more subdued, ethereal and orchestral sound): " Aire" (Air) Their next album, Entre el Cielo y el Suelo, included one of the biggest singles of the 1980s that also completely elevated Mecano's popularity and critical acclaim even beyond Spanish-speaking countries: " Hijo de la Luna" (Son of the Moon). Great musicality in a pop waltz composition with lyrics that are practically a poem about inter-racial relationships. The song was translated into several languages and covered by several artists, including Sarah Brightman. Their next album, Descanso Dominical, reaffirmed their commercial and critical success, with interesting and deep sound and lyrics. The most important single of this era arguably was "Mujer contra Mujer" (Woman against woman), the first song in Spanish that directly addresses the story of a lesbian love, including with its romantic video, censored in a few Latinamerican countries that prohibited videos with LGBT+ content back then. www.metatube.com/en/videos/30640/Mecano-Mujer-Contra-Mujer/Me Cole En Una Fiesta, Hijo de la Luna, and Mujer Contra Mujer are amongst my top 30 songs in Spanish of the decade.

Brutal round:
We clear Out of Touch, the best song by Hall and Oates available. It's not as great as WatchMojo thinks it is, but it's pretty solid.
She Drives Me Crazy leaves and I'm stunned. Great pop tune.
Crazy Little Thing Called Love was a top tier pop/rock tune. Queen deserved better than this.
Little Lies was a nice tune, but yeah, I don't think it would hold up against the best of the 1980s. Fine placement.
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic is another fine tune, but this was a stacked rankdown...I'm hoping their other one doesn't go anywhere for a while.

#75. Out Of Touch - Hall & Oates This was for me there most 80's song. A great song none the less. You peeps are seriously out of touch with blue eyed soul. or as Hall & Oates called "Rock N' Soul"
#74. She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals By late 80's the New Wave/Synthpop had evolved into something more simpler. By then I was into Hi-NRG and Glam MEtal. This particular song didn't do much for me.
#73. Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen I seriously cannot accept the fact that some here think every M.J. song left is better than this song.
#72. Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac Wasn't really into this one when it was around.
#71. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police there is surely no magic in this RD.
ok seriously a few Michael Jackson songs have to leave. The incorrect one exited, but now its time for two more. At least "Man In The Mirror" and for sure "The Way You Make Me Feel". Maybe even "Billie Jean" its overrated. The rest can stay as long as they like.
