Reba McEntire Rankdown: Results Time!
Final Participant List: (10)
1. tim2. Kanenrá:ke3. someguy4. codyj1005. castleoblivion266. bboat117. RobbyFlorida8. Kris Kringle9. .indulgecountry10. taylorFollowing: Cody Wants Out...Would you look at that! At least we hit double digits Really though, I'm not expecting much more than 10 or so for most of these early albums, so this turnout is fine :) Hopefully we can surpass it for the My Kind of Country album at least!! (Which we should, 'cause Cody Wants Out... submitted for that one. So as long as everybody who submitted for this one also does the other one, we will have 11!) Anyway, I'm rambling ;) Let's do some predictions!
Questions to get us started:
1) What will be #1?
2) What will be #11?
3) Which songs will be in the top 5?
4) What song will be most polarizing? Least polarizing?
5) Which of the singles will place highest? Where will it place? (I Don't Want To Be A One Night Stand, (There's Nothing Like The Love) Between A Woman And A Man, Glad I Waited Just For You, One To One)
6) Which of the singles will place lowest? Where will it place?
7) What will be the highest-placing album track? Where will it place?
8) Any other thoughts/predictions?

Kicking things off, we take away "Take Your Love Away". This song only earned one last place rank from someguy, and yet it managed to be our last place for the majority of the submission process! In the end it aaaaalmost escaped the last place though, because it tied with our #10 song. It lost the tie though because our #10 song has a top 2 rank ;) This song isn't terrible or anything, but definitely on the more boring side of this album. I figured it would be bottom 2 or 3, even if it didn't quite deserve last place.

One to one, You and me. Anyone with eyes can plainly see How it is with you and me. One to one, From now on In each other's arms where we belong. And how we love when we're alone.

"One To One" is officially our first single to leave us. someguy or RobbyFlorida, do you know what the deal is with the final single from this album? "One To One" is listed as the final single on Wikipedia.... But it was not included in the singles rankdown because when we did the singles rd the final single was listed on Wikipedia as "I've Waited All My Life For You".... "One To One" was nowhere in sight. And now "I've Waited" is the one that's nowhere in sight. I know ultimately it doesn't matter because the 4th single never charted either way, but my obsessive mind still wants to know the truth, lmao.

Anyway, I'm honestly shocked that "One To One" wasn't a runaway last place contender here. It definitely benefited from receiving codyj100's #2 rank early on in the submission process. That gave it enough of a lead that "Take Your Love Away" was never quite able to surpass (although it did manage to tie right at the end, as you know). This song is sooooooooo boring though... I literally cannot name a single redeeming quality other than the fact that it has Reba's voice, which doesn't give it any sort of competitive advantage over the other songs in this rd, lol.

And there's the song that was listed as a single when we did the singles rd, but was apparently not actually a single after all in favor of "One To One" "I've Waited All My Life For You" was the runaway last place finisher in the singles rd, and I'd say based on their positions here "One To One" would have easily suffered the same fate had it been included instead, lmao. This song is also boring af, so I am glad it's leaving now. It deserved last place in her singles rd, lol.

That should've been an easy guess for me, but somehow I overlooked "One to One". Anyways, I did some sleuthing around on Wikipedia and found that "One to One" was added to the page on March 20, 2019 and listed as being released as a DJ only promo single. That's about all that I came up with though.

Out at #8 is "I Was Glad To Give My Everything To You", which with three last place votes tied with "One To One" for having the most last place votes. It also got top 6 votes from at least half of us though! This song was accordingly one of the least-consistent performers in this rd. It bounced around more than most other songs. It did appear likely to settle in at #7 near the end, but even then it got bumped backwards at the last second by taylor. To me this has one of the best chorus melodies on the album! Although there is a weird vocal layering effect on Reba's voice that makes it sound like the resonance of her voice is out of tune with her actual voice, which I can definitely see rubbing people the wrong way. Looking past that this has a fantastic melody, but I can understand why some might not be able to get over that, lol.

“I Was Glad to Give My Everything to You” was easily my least favorite song on the album if only because I didn’t like it from a lyrical standpoint. I just couldn’t connect with this song on any level.

Quick note about the album tracks rd, since we're at the point where "I Was Glad To Give My Everything To You" is the 5th-highest album track and would traditionally be in the album tracks rd by my normal rules. Nearly all of Reba's '70s/'80s albums will be new discoveries for me as we go through this series, so I am not quite ready to commit to saying we'll be guaranteed to use 5 album tracks per album for our album tracks rd. Given the obscure nature of many of these albums, I am going to reserve the right to use my judgement regarding the album tracks. If a certain album makes sense to only include 3 album tracks, then I'll only include three album tracks. That seems fair, because I also don't want to end up with a 80-song album tracks rd for the albums that are least quintessential to her career, lmao.
That being said, I would LOVE to have you guys do some advocating for your favorite album tracks as we go through this series! Anything in the top 2-3 album tracks per album is pretty guaranteed to be safe, but if it's like the 5th highest album track and has absolutely no fanfare, it is definitely at risk of me cutting it from the album tracks rd. I don't know what you're passionate about unless you tell me! ;)

I do like "Invitation To The Blues", but tbh it low-key drives me CRAZY how many lines there are without subjects in this song!! "Received your invitation to the blues", "Lonely all the time since I lost you", etc. "I" and "I'm" are implied rather than said, and that is horrible grammar, and it distracts me to no end when listening to this song!! Lmao

"Why Can't He Be You" is a Patsy Cline cover that didn't do very hot in Patsy Cline's rankdown that we just completed, and accordingly it ended up being our most polarizing song here! However, its TWO #1 ranks from Kanenrá:ke and taylor helped give it a lot of staying power on this album. I have always liked the lyrics of this one, although melodically I could understand finding it hard to get into if you usually have trouble getting into Patsy's music.

‘Cause it’s a miracle from heaven, And it fills me through and through. Like a feelin’ that surrounds us, Touchin’ me and touchin’ you. When you wrap your love around me, It’s not hard to understand Why there’s nothin’ like the love Between a woman and a man.

"There's Nothing Like The Love" is our second single to leave, kicking off our top 5! This song is so weird and hard for me to pin down my thoughts for, lmao. On the one hand it has a really singsongy and catchy melody. But on the other hand the whole thing just comes across as cheesy as fuck! Sentiments for it were pretty similar across the board, getting it to settle in at #5 very consistently.

This is a really solid top four. I even believe the top four songs on this album are stronger than the top four songs on most of her 70s-mid 80s albums.
