Who knows how these negotiations actually played out, but I find it hard to believe that Taylor couldn’t have ponied up $300m; certainly with a partner, if not alone. That Scott chose to transact in that amount not only with someone other than Taylor, but with someone whom Taylor openly hates, is definitely slimy.

If she wants to exercise the highest form of professional revenge, she should apply the level of compositional excellence exhibited in that essay (and in so much of her other work) to all of her UMG music, rather than letting stuff like “ME!” slip through quality control.

Taylor Swift issued the following statement bemoaning the Big Machine-Ithaca Holdings deal forged by Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun. Naturally Taylor's fans have taken up the cause on social media, where #WeStandWithTaylor quickly became a trending topic. Several insiders have noted that Taylor is playing the victim here, following on the heels of her having previously quashed a prior deal to sell Big Machine to Snapchat boss Evan Spiegel. They also note that with her dad on the Big Machine board as a shareholder she would certainly have been in the loop about the deal. Wonderers are also wondering why Taylor didn't purchase her own masters, as she certainly possessed the resources to have done so.

Hits Daily Double on the situation. Hits has definitely seemed pro-Scooter over the past several years, but it would be crazy to write off all these points as bias.

Petition for Taylor to remaster and re-release her first albums. It has already gotten over 30,000 signatures. 

I was very judgemental of this "idea" at first cause it takes much effort, time, money and artists don't usually do that but imagine if she actually does. "Album release day! 'Lover' is out everywhere today! Also, a new version of my self-titled album made just for you". That would be such a powerful bitch move. 

We all know Taylor is obsessed with her work and her catalog. As she should be. That being said, unless a miracle happens, she will never have the original recordings back and that's a bummer cause these are the ORIGINAL masters and there won't be any other originals (if that makes sense). However, if she re-records the albums with a little bit more polished production and the same producers, if they're willing to work with her(which of course will happen cause it'd be amazing for their reputation), the impact might be huge.

Anyways, this is wishful thinking and I don't see any of that happening. The petition is fun to watch though.

This. Scooter is just Scooter. Borchetta is the bigger trash for not offering Taylor the opportunity to buy her catalog (I assume from her post that the way her initial contract was structured was that the label had to make the offer for the masters to be bought, not the other way around). 99.9% of artists sign a trash contract when they start, Taylor can at least say that she was able to use that time to build herself up to a level where she can never be put into such a situation again, and try to raise awareness about that.

And hell no to her re-recording her albums and putting them out again. No, her best revenge would be to continue her high quality, and bar both Scooter and Borchetta from any future dealings with her.

Maybe they'd release unreleased tracks on it from those sessions. It sucks what happened but hey that would be an interesting outcome.

Why wouldn't they release a GH album (with soundtrack singles, etc) or find other ways to maximize her catalog? Thish has happened to many big artists when they leave (Mariah, Madonna, etc.) In those cases, the labels wisely consulted with those artists to do track selection.

It's a bummer and I can understand why she'd feel this way. Fans really do forget that it's called Show BUSINESS and making $$$$ Let's face it, BM would be worth a lot less if it didn't include Taylor's catalog.

I'm certain this is Taylor salvo to ensure she gets some kind of say on how the catalog is utilized. After all, she will benefit significantly financially.

I wonder how many truly major artists own their masters.

But smart trash. Taylor may write songs about him, but he'll get bigger bags from her catalog than she will from those songs probably.



I'm not going to say that that post from his wife is completely without merit. There was definitely an element of the WASP Sorority President thing that Taylor had for years that seemed to be going away in recent times, but Yael is fundamentally wrong when she says that Taylor was given the opportunity to own her own masters if the price was that she was essentially subbing them out for new material.

To play devil’s advocate I can see why people close to Scooter are angry. Taylor should’ve directed a majority of this heat towards Scott. He was the one that signed her and put her in that contract and he was the one that inevitably sold Big Machines while using her catalog for leverage. Why is Scooter the only one being taken to task for this? Also for her to go to social media now when she had previous knowledge is nothing more but manipulation on her part as well, but that’s a big IF on whether or not she knew. If it was me I would’ve been going off from the gate and NOT just when I have an audience. More details on the timeline will probably be published to back one or the others sides but Taylor does have to tread very carefully herself. Yes Kanye is garbage now but she tried to lie on that man by saying he never asked permission to use her name in Famous. She ran with that narrative and even continued on the Grammy stage in her acceptance speech until the audio was released later in the year. I’m just going to wait until more information is released before making a rash decision on calling somebody Satan. I however do wonder about the current artists that are on Big Machine and how this all will effect them.

People have already tried to come for her about that and she's already responded:
